Nationals Date?

Is it just me, or does it seem more and more likely Nats is moving back to Origins?

As much as I would like that, I don't see it happening this year. Anyone who says they will NEVER going back I feel is not right. I wouldn't surprise me even with Origins mess up to not hold it again eventually at Origins. It to me would be CHEAPER to hold it at Origins then to hold it at alone, but I could be wrong. I think that spending less is better because it tends to help you out spend it in other places or just make a nicer profit.

As far as where it will be held, Origins isn't going to happen. Origins if they haven't already are going to start registration. It will be a NIGHTMARE tell us it is going back to Origins now as the hotel and all the other stuff would make it really quite hard on us and cost us more money. I don't know where it will be, but I expect that in the next few weeks we will hear about it. I expect to hear where it is and when before the Prereleases. :thumb:

What makes you say that? I loved that St. Louis had a softball field, but I'd rather have it at Origins again. The only real issue with Origins is no one likes paying $70 for a badge. Overall though, I think it's worth it. Plus, a lot of people who play Pokemon enjoy other games or exploring the vendors.

One thing I've never understood is why if we aren't holding Nationals at Origins why Nationals must be the same week as Origins. Can't we do it a week before or after? Even two weeks before? That allows people who still want to attend Origins the option to, and then they can even do some smaller Pokemon events there.

And btw, not to revive an old argument, but I feel compelled to intervene in an argument when one person is clearly in the wrong. Lucario was 100% in the right with what he said. This is a news/gossip section (as a message board should be.) He posted what he thought and made clear it wasn't a fact. I'm sure no one saw his post and immediately booked a non-refundable July 3 flight ticket to St. Louis.

Just a thought... Nats needs a location and Origins is a fledgling convention without a major game. I'm not a fan of paying the $70 or so for just playing Pokemon though. For holding it any earlier, I'm not sure if that's possible - a lot of schools end in mid-June.

I wish Origins had a way to host US Nats without making those Pokemon players pay the additional cost of a badge.

I was told by someone from PUI a couple of years ago that Nats would never leave Origins because it would be too expensive to host Nats as a stand-alone event. Did Nats cost PUI more by having it in St. Louis last year? I don't know, but I believe this delay is being caused by budget decisions more than anything.

I agree with Steve P regarding Origins and Pokemon being a perfect match. GENCON and Pokemon certainly were in 2003. But Dark Twins hit the nail on the head. It is impossible to get rooms at Origins at this point, so moving Nats back there would cause major logistics problems for most people.

I need to know when and how much to get payday loans for. After all, Greyhound tickets don't buy themselves.

Drew,

Agreed, if it was going to a gaming convention, Pokemon regular folks would be left with the worst possible hotel choices. If it was Origins, most Attendee's already have better hotel options booked. There would be room's, but not ones that hit everyone's families "price and preference" points.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Nov 15 2008 I think when Nationals 09 was anounced.
Nov 15 2009 we hoped it would have been anounced for Nationals 2010

T+ 68 Days and Counting.
Having a Date Really Helps!

This is my biggest issue with the holdover for an announcement. As someone who basically moves around the Midwest during summer con season working/volunteering for other companies to get in free and get free product, I need to know when this thing is going to happen so I can let the company(ies) I'm volunteering for know they need replacements. This was the single reason I was not in St. Louis last year. Running Nats over Origins is a HUGE smack in the face at GAMA, of which POP and PUSA are part of if I remember correctly.

As of now, I'm committed to three cons and am being contacted for more. I don't want to commit to any more but, if POP doesn't get on teh ball, I really have no choice. HGSS promotion and website issues are one thing. But not having a set/secure venue or withholding the announcement from the public is just absurd...

Some of us are not old enough to drive ourselves to Nationals.
Instead, we rely on our parents to drive us to Nationals.
Some of our parents have fairly busy work schedules. It would be to their advantage to know when Nationals is so that they can make time to take us.
What I'm saying is that my parents, and probably a lot of other parents, need to know ASAP when Nationals is or else that creates a chance that some players may not be able to attend Nationals. Both my parents are frustrated by the time POP is taking to release the Nationals date. It would really help to have a Nationals date...

Everyone, you just need to be patient.

Remember, tPCI needs to clear all announcements through legal department, and they will only give us the date and location when it is 100% confirmed. Just be patient. If nothing comes up by the end of February, then somethings amiss.

I suspect we should get an announcement tomorrow though, As it is Monday.

...or even that we are already know that something is amiss. I wouldn't be surprised if all possible announcements are ready to go and just waiting for whatever is causing the hold up to be cleared. Kind of like how newspapers will prepare two front pages: Republican win and Democrat win.

It isn't too hard to imagine what an official post to this thread might look like. It would be along the lines that "we know you want/need to know, we want to get it announced too, but right now we can't for reasons that we cannot divulge" Sympathetic but ultimately unhelpful. It isn't nice but patience is the only option. Trust me that an announcement on date and venue that is then changed is much worse than not knowing.

They will NEVER return to Origins after the fiasco with giving ticket slots from younger divisions to fill in the other ones.

Expect it in Missouri IMO

Coates, I feel like the fiasco you described wasn't something that was unrepairable, unforgivable, etc. I believe PUSA wasn't given the customer service level they expected from Origins (PUSA being the customer here). As for never? Things change, it being back at Origins wouldn't be awful for a majority of the player base. Realistically, I've been saying that if we aren't hosting Nats at a particular venue for a reason (like Origins) it should move around every year. I stand by that, and I'm hoping that PUSA gets their stuff together. Don't be nervous you don't have a nationals date, be nervous if its an indicator of something we're not predicting.

I dunno... this is kind of crazy.

I find it hilarious for the cursor on the new pokemon website to be over States/Provincals and say current event then underneath it say coming soon.

Has anyone thought that Nationals might be completely different for you guys this year? There are so many people that maybe they are trying to find a way to make it easier to run or something? IDK seems possible though

If you only play Pokemon, I agree that Origins might not be the place for you. But, if you enjoy other games like me, any problems that might have occurred in the past at Origins aren't enough to make you prefer a Pokemon-only location.

I'm in a very small minority (a Pokemon player who enjoys lots of other card and board games), so I won't "will" my desires on anyone. At last year's US Nats, I tried to organize some side boardgaming. If this year's Nats is a stand-alone event again, I'll probably try again this year to organize some side gaming. But, it will never compare to the "board room" at Origins (24/7 open boardgaming, many with the game designers).

TBH i only play Pokemon, but I still enjoyed Origins a lot more. It's a Gaming environment, where kids can find other games and such to play, and others can look around and see other games, the massive dice selling areas, plushes, and so much more there. As well as the place had a decent Food Court, multiple hotels connected within a quick walk, and was much better overall then St Louis I thought. (Plus who wants to watch the Cardinals play baseball!)

It's like being an ice skating fan. You can spend your vacation to go to the US National Skating Championships and only see ice skating, or you can go the the Olympics and experience so much more. :thumb:

As far as Pokemon at Origins, its kind of a Trade Off.

Risk attracting other gamers, maybe building the brand by being more visible to a select community, make a small number of people happier (myself included) or

run the entire show yourself, exactly how you want it, build the brand by making it a family friendly event (no guys in drag as the Sailor Scouts, no cosplayers as Vikings or half-naked women with capes), and invite the media to come see your show, not your event at someone else's.

+ Steve I like your analogy for Olympics versus a single sport championship. I personally had no problems with Origins, but we didn't do that much "other" gaming to care, I just like visiting with the pokemon folks. T

+The half-naked women with capes, I didn't see anything other than just geeky folks(like us) having fun over the years, so I didin't mind any of that, and wasn't concerned for my family. Now, if you are talking parade outside columbus convention center, well that isn't associated with origins.

+Could, I wonder, if details on the video game function is holding things up.?? Again the VG was probably the reason they moved from origins in the first place.

+ Leverage: Negotition 101; Until all ducks are lined up, you don't want to commit to anything so you don't give anyone leverage. If pokemon USA said announced it was going to be in St Louis again in July 3-5, but it didn't have a finalized and fully detailed contract with the convention hall, convention food vendors, and hotels, they give up all the leverage in the world by pre-releasing information. Pokemon might very well be negotiating for better food options for St Louis or what ever location they are going to be at. Again, this is giving benefit of the doubt to Pokemon here.

+ Lawyers - Agreed with other posts.. Lawyers and Haggling on inconsenquential details on Contracts could be an issue.

Again, we are asking for preliminary dates. No other details are needed.
