Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

NATS @ INDIANAPOLIS: Your Thoughts.

Please please please have it in Indianapolis again next year? I barely made a dent in all that I wanted to do and see in the city.

One of the things I loved about the location was that there were so many things within easy walking distance. And the Riverwalk was a lovely place to just take a walk and clear my head.*

So let's see...we had a spacious and accommodating area for the tournament which was surrounded by places to eat and things to do.** Sounds like a slam-dunk to me.

For next year, we can share ideas about how to cut down on some of the expenses like parking and bottles of water.

Nats was a blast from start to finish. Thanks to everyone who made it happen.

*See, Yoshi-. There are some Pokemon players that see the sun occasionally.
** Long live the 24-hour Steak'n'Shake!

I said before Indy was announced that it would be a great location for the event. I said after it was announced that it was a great choice, and I reiterate after the event happened that it was a fantastic choice for U.S. Nationals! It was definitely the best run and located Nationals to date. Everything really lined up great, in my eyes. As someone else said, this is definitely the new benchmark. I'll admit, I still miss Origins, but if we can't get Origins as a part of the package, this is about as great as it can get. I really have so few complaints. Parking was steep, and the Mutant "Draft" a disaster ( I hate mutant formats to begin with so I never even considered playing, but I know a lot of friends who were very offended by the event ) but that was more than made up for by the great con center, the nearby mall, movie theatre, restaurants, hotels, etc. I felt the three day event was a huge improvement as well. Just an overall huge improvement over last year. I'd really like to see it in Indy every year as well.

My only complaint - The price for parking!

The same complaint arises about GenCon too.

In Indy, you just have to check around for parking. If you park in what is designated as the Mall Parking Garage, I think it's $12 a day (at least it is for GenCon. I dunno if they jacked the price up for Nats, though). There's cheaper parking all over the place. I know not having to go outside is nice and all, but I'd rather take the heat for a few minutes than have to pay double the price for parking.

Wish I could have gone (couldn't get the time off work, but it made so that I could go to my 13th straight Origins), but it was good to see Nats in Indy being this well received. Now if only POP would NOT put Nats on Origins weekend, it'd truly be perfect!

My friends and I talked about Nats Locations a few months ago. Someone brought up Indy, and we all didn't mind it at first. Now, I want to go back to it. I thought it was amazing for Nationals, and I really hope that it returns next year.

Didd't it use to be call Midnight mutant draft. I remember walking in to start the day in Columbus while players from Midnight Mutant draft were walking out. So it use to go much later.

Coming from a VGC competitor here are my thoughts:
Thank you TPCI for putting out the chairs for everyone even if they were a bit late (they only put the chairs out during round 2). When I competed at VGC regionals over in the NE I was forced to sit on the floor for the past 7 rounds =/ which was very uncomfortable for a person of my height.

As everyone above said, the mic system clearly wasn't working. I'm sure both were causing interference with each other between both the tcg and vgc tournaments. Maybe you can rent 2 separate rooms? Or have a divider between both events. It might drown out the sound or at least minimize the echo from both rooms. Just a suggestion.

The vendors were definitely a lot better then GG from last year. They never had an attidute and conducted their business with no problems. The only complaint I have is Troll and Toad didn't make it clear that we had to organize our cards in alphabetical order. IMO I'd have to say CC>TT Also their selection wasn't quite the best. The only thing good about GG from last year was they had everything pokemon. So when my group and I checked out their selection, all we found was tcg so we pretty much left. My friends would have definitly spent some $ had they had other things besides cards. I was surprised to see them selling one of the staff vgc shirts for $25 but I guess it was alright since it was after the event ended.

The location was pretty awesome. Indy>STL for sure. The convention center was so awesome. It connected like 4 hotels, food court and the mall, as well as the parking garage (it also provided us some covering when it started pouring Sunday night so we used the convention center and the parking garage to get to shake and steak so we won't get soaked :D )

If you can keep it in indy I'd appreciate it ;) Though if you guys decide to change the location I trust you will choose another great city where I can hang out with my friends as well as meet up with other ppl who also enjoy this great game

Prime, I was generally happier with the staff at the vendors this year compared with last year. They seemed much more willing to help out, and if you asked them to find you something, they wouldn't dismiss you out of hand and would actually try and look for somethings that might not have been out on the tables. I found a bunch of keychains and TFG stuff that weren't on the tables but were available for purchase. Cache even gave me a box of random junk to look through, and I found some pretty precious gems there. I was less happy with T&T as they only had TCG-related stuff and their staff seemed more disinterested than anything else. At least they weren't rude and understaffed like GG was last year. And both places had CREDIT CARD READERS that worked, which made things much easier for everybody involved.

A couple of things I somehow managed to forget.

The food vendors. It was nice to have several options inside the convention center, even if they were kinda expensive. But they all closed down before 8pm, which meant that I had to walk nearly a mile to the mall to get some food. It was nice that the skywalk existed to help me get there, but I felt like I might miss something if I went out. Luckily, I didn't. I think it would be VERY nice for PCI to get those food vendors to stick around until at least 10pm, if not later. I think they'd make a TON of money from those overnight players in the mutant and Charity events.

RA, I agree completely with your sound system suggestion. It's the main reason that I want the VGC in a different room from the TCG, at least during the Swiss rounds of TCG Nationals. There were a ton of times where the VGC MC had to cut short an announcement because of an announcement in the TCG area. I realize that the TCG is a massive entity, and it would take more than your normal sound system to properly dispense information over such an area, but it's quite doable, and I know that the players would like it better than what has happened the last couple of years. Having the overhead speakers would be fine for simple announcements like "pairings are up". But for complex or area-specific announcements like age division time calls and pre-tournament instructions, it would make things a lot easier to have a closed-circuit sound system specifically geared towards the TCG area, and probably for each age division so that information isn't missed or glossed over.

I guess I was just a touch upset that there was no official Pokemon hotel or special hotel rate for Pokemon players. I can probably understand why that didn't happen this year, but it'd've been nice to hear officially where the Regionals winners were staying so that the players could coordinate their room bookings and stay close to each other. I had a dozen players and a dozen more parents come from Champaign, and no two families stayed in the same hotel for various reasons that included price, location, and Regional winnings.

I can't comment on how the TCG Nationals or Modified side events were being run, cuz I was in the VGC area all weekend. It looked, though, like there was a LOOOOONG time between the first round pairings or player roster going up and the actual start of round 1. An hour or something like that? It should be possible to get through more than 2 or 3 rounds before the necessity of a lunch break, and 7 rounds shouldn't take 12 hours to complete, even with a crowd as large as 1336.

Dunno why, but Sunday felt like a bit of a letdown walking into the room and discovering that half of it had been blocked off. I can kinda understand why they did that, but it was a little deflating to see this beautiful, wide open space cut in half for Sunday. Why couldn't the Professor Cup had used the Jr/Sr area on Sunday for their tournament? I LOVE being part of the action, and I would've liked to have been at least visible and recognized for my efforts by the playing community. Again, I don't think putting the Cup in a separate room was a good idea.

Just asking a question here. What were the "official" side events that took place in the "official" Side Event area being run by "official" Nationals staff? About all that I saw were the 8-mans and two Modified events. Were there any Limited events? Alternate formats? I have no idea, I wasn't in the main TCG area for more than a few hours the entire weekend.

Ryan: TPCi does not control the food vendors in the Conv. Center. Those are mini restaurants. The owners decide when/how long they are open. They still have to PAY the employees and the bills. Also, not sure what your definition of a mile is, but I doubt 3 blocks = mile. There were plenty of places to eat and most were within a 1/2 mile or so.

As to the "length" of time between rds, I can tell you this. Outside of the one repair issue rd 5 (?), the MAs rds moved very consistently. I left my stopwatch running until the next rd pairings went up and they were up usually 1 hr to 1 hr 5 mins from the start of the previous rd. Since rds take 40 mins and we always have a SD match (or 10) going after time is called, I'd say the HIVE did a GREAT job turning the results. 800+ players, 2 pods, 2 computers = fast finger clicks for results. Having the power go out to the printers before rd 1 also caused a delay. NOT OP's fault.

Over all, this was a fantastic Nats. Best one yet IMO.

Keith

Keith, I understand about the food vendors. It was merely a comment, that's all. Also, the food court was three blocks West and then another 2 blocks south of the Center. Round trip, it's about a mile to walk there from the halls we were in. Or, at least, it felt like it after being on my feet for the 8 hours the VGC took each day. It was about 15-20 minutes round trip, including the time it took to actually get my food. I ate in the Center at one of the Parents tables.

About the round times, that's my mistake. I could just glance the TCG area once in a while while working the VGC, and noticed that we pretty much got through all the Seniors on Friday before Round 1 started. The expressions I saw ranged between annoyed amusement and near-nerd-rage from the Masters areas. IDK how the rounds went. I'll agree, though, that an hour per round is quite the achievement for the 800+ players, and only one data entry mistake is also fantastic for the size of the event.

Again, if you were willing to drive around a bit and walk, street parking was free on Saturday and Sunday. No need to feed the meters. That will improve for, say, next year when construction around the convention center won't be as bad.

Yeah, we knew about the free meter parking on the weekends, but the problem is by the time we got to the center, all of the meter spots were filled and we'd have to end up parking under the mall anyway. And since some of the events went so long into the night, we'd end up paying $20 anyway.

Parking is just really dang expensive in Indianapolis :frown:

Parking is just dang expensive in any big city period!

The sound system is more or less a slave to the way the location functions. Things were zoned off as well as one could reasonably hope - the Masters' sound board could send audio to just the Masters, or to literally the entire hall. Same thing goes for Juniors and Seniors. It would have been nice to be able to talk to just the 3 TCG quadrants, but that's not really a TPCi thing, as far as I'm aware. Woo unions, and stuff.

Mad props need to be given to Tymon. He had to do a TON of running back and forth (he had one Pokewalker day break 30,000) and the amount of magic he can work with TOM to keep time-annihilating re-pairs at a minimum due to match slip problems / people not getting us their drop slips / whatever was amazing to get to watch.

Also just down the street there is free parking at all times.

Yeah! I did see that the metered parking was free all weekend long!!!

My wife was like, you really gonna keep our car out on the street all night long??
So, I paid the $25 per day.

I had no issues w/ paying the parking fee because I knew my car would be out-of-sight and out-of-mind from would be jackers-n-thieves.

But, I wonder how many others caught the free parking all up-n-down the street piece !

I had an amazing experience this year with the way nationals was set up. By far it was the best out of all I've been to, this being my 5th nationals. The open gaming room was VERY nice and had to be one of the best things they could have done, I was able to go in there and relax with my friends in a more casual setting for playtesting. It was nice to have it set up during, before, and after nationals.

The amount of room there was outside of the room was extremely comforting, I was able to go right outside after finishing my round and be sure there would be a place for me to sit, I have bad joints and sitting and standing so much makes them weak for the day. There was plenty of space to just walk around when it was needed.

Food, that has been on of my biggest issues at past US nationals events. Having the slight walk to the food court was wonderful. I was able to go and get my food and bring it back to the hall outside. In previous years, especially St Lous, food wasn't so easy. At Origins the only food that could really be taken to go easily was subway, and so subway always had the longest lines. Having the mall with things like chinese and taco bell was very nice.

The playing hall was very well set up, it was easy to observe my friends matches and I was never yelled at to clear an area. Pairing as well seemed to go much smoother in this enviornment and being in masters the effenciancy of being able to see my pairings was very nice.

As far as parking goes I can't give to much of an opinion on that as my mom was bringing me to and from the hotel in the car and did not have to park. I did however, hear that many people had to pay to park at their own hotel, that was disappointing to hear. Like said before though, parking is always an issue in a big city.

Having two days for swiss rounds was wonderful, the only thing I will say is that I wish I could have had 3 or 4 rouns on the second day instead of two as by the 5th round I was about ready to go to sleep. I definitly think this greatly helped our older and younger players though as it was much easier to get a good nights rest.

Having so much to do in this location made it very nice when trying to keep busy. When I was bored I could walk to the mall or walk around outside the convention center and not have to go far before finding something to do.

Overall I really have no true complaints. Being from ohio and 16 I was forced to go with a parent, however, I still found this experience the best I've had. My only wish is that I could have stayed to watch top cut instead of being dragged off to see family that lived in the area. I really hope this location is considered for next year.

@bullados: The Professor Cup was held in open gaming because the event was scheduled to run later than the time the main hall was scheduled to close for breakdown. :thumb:

I almost forgot to mention, I had a lot of fun giving away my homemade buttons this year! It's been a long time since I got to attend a big event like this, so I had lots of fun! And one of my friends got to play on his brand new Luxray mat I got for him! He didn't win Nationals, but he'll always be a winner to me! GO SPITTER :thumb:

am i the only one who thought that parking was unbelivable high?

It's downtown of a major metro area. It's kinda expected that parking would be on the steep side. If you think Indy was high, you should see downtown Chicago. That $20 might get you 3-5 hours, rather than a whole day. There was streetside parking, but I liked having my car out of sight and out of mind for the weekend, so I paid the extra.

Dan, that's kool. I understand now. Doesn't mean I won't make the suggestion again next year if/when this happens, but I understand the reasons behind the decision.
