Obama Speech Censored in China

So I'm wondering what everyone thinks about Obama's inaugural address being censored by the Chinese authorities. He had some harsh words for communism, with which the Chinese communist party [understandably] wasn't happy, and was keen to keep away from the ears of its citizenry.

Is this significant insofar as it could signal the beginning of a more long-term regression in USA-PRC relations?

First off, welcome back drrty byl. The community missed you for the past 24 hours.

Second, this sounds mildly hopeful. Although the Democrats are less business-oriented than we need them to be, the party has been noticeably unapologetic to the communists (particularly the PRC). Part of the reason why our prosperity has been so lackluster is because we've been like little piggies to the communists.

This opposition might be superficial, though, because they effectively own us. Ultimately, I'll reserve judgment until we stop wasting trillions of taxpayer dollars for worthless bailouts (which we conveniently borrow from China...).

I say place embargos on ALL communist countries...... not just some.

I've been going around looking at my clothing/stuff in general and am in awe to see that about 75% of it is made in China. That's ridiculous. Not when our unemployment rate is already at 7.2% and growing faster than a fat kid at McDonald's (which is a whole nother animal to be tackled).

But that's just my opinion.

Japan is actually out largest trade partner right now, and I'm cool with that because next to America Japan is my favorite country, and they have lots of high quality electronics, but as for things like clothes and those lead based toys we here about in the news all the time we have to stop getting those things from China, and start buying them from American distributors.

I totally agree. I have been studying Cuba for my school a lot lately, and that's one of the few countries we actually have an embargo on (I really don't know, do we have embargos on any other countries?) , and Cuba seems to be the only country that could actually have the embargo lifted with good reason. America just isn't putting embargos on the right countries at the right times. and as you have said, we need to stop waisting time getting our crappy products from China, I think we'd be doing fine without em.

I honestly am not suprised at all that China did this. They silence anything that makes them look bad. In reality, the PRC-People's Republic of China (I think?) - is anything but. I'm not here to flame Obama although I am a conservative, but I will be eager to see how he handles problems with these Communist countries in general.

We have an embargo on North Korea too.

I find it disipicable(sp?) that we're even trading with China. Then you look at the trade deficit and think to yourself, "wow, we're giving all that money to a communist nation - yet some people have the audacity to criticize our president for having SOCIALISTIC (in the most modest form) ideas"

What I can't stand is that -everything- is made in China. We're supporting 2 cent an hour labor so we can buy luxury goods that aren't even NEEDED. Not even getting into the human rights part of it, allowing companies to produce in China means less and less American jobs which means we'll be buying even more all the cheap, useless junk from them. Who gets screwed? American workers.

So please try not to buy things made in China. Instead, buy President Obama shirts from his website - all of them are made and produced by union supporters workers in the USA :thumb:

Actually, Canada is our biggest trade partner - followed by China, Mexico, then Japan.

I'm totally fine with Canada. I love them Canucks and am jealous of their free health insurance. I'd actually be at a doctor's office right now if I had it, but too bad I don't! Dang America!

Dang American ?! How can you say that? If American is so "dang" then why do you live here? Ever heard of being "Patriotic?" Your talking about all sorts of thing that you think would be good for our country, and yet your so ungrateful for the good things America has. And don't tell me your joking about "dang America" becuase even if you are that isn't something to joke about.

Or you look at all the cheap goods that low income families rely on to clothe and entertain their children and themselves and realize that we need China's goods for now. I dislike China's government and communism a great deal, but it would be very detrimental to a large segment of society to embargo them.

I personally try to buy US made products whenever possible, but sometimes getting the best quality at a certain price point means buying foreign products. I'd love for us to be self sufficient, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

China censoring the anti-communism parts of the speech is predictable. They are unstable country whose economy relies on foreign money. Of course they want to avoid any unrest, as that will mean less income. Obama can't do anything to drastic as China could wage war on us if they felt threatened enough. Currently they don't have a sufficient blue water navy that could project power over the Pacific, but they could wage a cyber ware on us that could cripple our economy even further. They also have a very stealthy diesel electric submarine that could sink any aircraft carriers we chose to mobilize against them.

I'm completely serious ;/

You know, I do belong in Europe or Australia based on my beliefs. With that being said, I don't value the capitalistic money hungry society that America has become and will always be. I don't believe in the way Americans live their lives. I don't believe in people going without health insurance because it costs two times their yearly income for their family. I am not ungratefulf or what America stands for, I am ungrateful for how Americans operate.

When you think of America you think of prosperity, capitalism, free markets, and wealth, right? But at what costs do those things become obtainable? America has turned into a nation full of over-worked, overweight, and over-depressed people. Why? So we can buy the latest and greatest things? I don't get it...

I don't believe in government handouts and I surely don't believe in bailing out companies that have failed because their products are inferior to the competition (i.e. GM/Chrysler/Ford), but I do believe in a certain standard of living beyond wealth and "having things."

Look at the way Australia operates. They have the worlds best health insurance program, is one of the most educated nations, and is ranked 6th on the quality of life index. Where's the USA? #13. If we were at Nationals right now, America wouldn't even make top cut. (How'd you like the Pokemon analogy lol)

In all honesty, I was ashamed to call myself an American when bush was president. However, now that President Obama has taken the reigns of this country I am truly elated to be living here. Let's hope that he finds the solutions to the nation's problems and until then I will be trying my best to support this country and everyone that lives here.

BTW the USA is #23 on the world's most happiest countries to live in, pretty bad for the #1 most competitive country in the world...

Four legs good, two legs better!!! Four legs good, two legs better!!! Don't question your country, it's just what the enemy wants you to think. Better to be "patriotic" because everything we do is right.

Getting past that, just remember that China depends on us as well to supply the capital so they can have their cheap jobs for their people. If they call us on their debt, they hurt themselves just as much.

Well, there's more than one way to run a country, that's for sure. I don't believe America is a capitalistic money hungry society and that's exactly what Communists thought. You can even look at old U.S.S.R. propaganda posters.

So do you think placing a trade embargo on China would return low-wage manufacturing jobs to the US, and in turn slightly increase the price of cheap goods, but at the same time make it possible for the no-wage earner demographic to obtain those goods at a slightly higher price, seeing as they would (theoretically) become low-wage earners?
But is something like this even feasible in the foreseeable future, since our federal government is borrowing unthinkably massive amounts of cash from the Chinese government to save privately held US-based businesses?

Is communism really so bad?
In theory, all DPRK and Cuban citizens have "free" health care. If it's the suppression of political dissent that bothers you, I can think of quite a few organizations that censor elements they disagree with.

I'm a fan of efficiency. If a capitalist employment would be most efficient, I want that option employed. However, sometimes the harsh cyclical nature of capitalism or the greed of it can really devastate, and sometimes be inefficient- in which case it might be best to introduce non-capitalist principles.

I think the policy we most need is one that opts for the most efficient, whatever that option was. That is what Obama basically said. He was going to ignore labels and biases and go for what we need.

I think that's the way to go. I don't think Obama said anything bad about China, but I can see why the Chinese government wouldn't be too keen on some ideas of Obama's speech. But yeah, there's more than one way to run a country. I agree with Pokemans that there are some things we have that we don't really need and what it comes down to is what the rules are and how a government is run. But that's not up to any of us to decide and just talking about it doesn't get any work done. And with everything, change takes time.

Dude, I can tell that he was completly joking.
You should have to.
On another note, when I say it, I mean it 200%

So many things off here.
Like were to safe/catious about everything.
We even edit cartoons anymore. Thats so sad -_-;;

China is good? Lets pretend you live in China, and that you posted your little diatribe on a website there. Just replace every reference to "America" with "China" and see what happens. I'd be willing to bet that you wouldn't last real long saying stuff like that.

China-US relations is a lost cause. I really don't think any ground is going to be gained in that area. Heads of state meet with each other all the time, and nothing gets done. As usual, governments, (whether they be Communist/Socialist/Republicrat/Progressive/Conservative/NeoCon/Theocratic/Whatever label people give them) aren't accomplishing anything. People can't count on the government to free them; they have to free themselves.

I say place embargos on ALL communist countries...... not just some.
Read the planks of the Communist Manifesto; The United States is a Communist country (as well as many others).
It seems that ever since the Cold War, "Communism" is just some word people tend to throw around without regard to what it really means.

So a bunch of people born on one landmass are more important than a bunch of people born on some other landmass?
