I think this quote, which you are applying to my astonishment of this thread and people being offended, actually applies to this whole thread. That is my response to you.

I will not be changing the banner. This thread is pointless. The fact that three or four people out of thousands are offended will not get me to do anything. There will always be someone offended at something - that doesn't mean we should change our ways for them.

I personally don't have an issue with it, but Jon, you take things way too personal, you actually had people defending you this time for a change, you should of just not posted because for some reason whenever you do post you just alienate more people with post that seem rude and blunt. I have always enjoyed your site, but you really need to try to work on when you post to try to be less defensive and on the offesive. You just need to make sure that you get your point across without trying to upset a lot of people. I am positive if you do this you will have even more people that will back you up on stuff like this. :thumb:

Personally, I still haven't figured why the gym allows these thread they always end up the same way, being locked because of personal attacks. :frown:

i thought the picture to be pretty funny. i mean i didnt find one bit of it offensive including the totodile part with blood. its not like there was probing or anything going on.

i mean if you found that offensive, i would hate to see what you would say after reading an explosm comic(for those who know what that is.) where the jokes are beyond offensive b/c they make fun of all sorts of things, there is nothing excluded.

maybe its b/c im not a parent, but then again isn't the majority of pokemon players non parents? anyway, if you really wanna avoid seeing the main site, you can always just bookmark the forums and get there that way.

anyway i support that picture. i thought it was cool and a good reference into the newest sets coming out HGSS.

I agree with you, but why do you feel the banner of a website known for providing people with scans of Pokémon cards is an appropriate venue for the matter?

EDIT: @willtopower You're missing the point I made of the banner's nature lowering the site into the context of Pokémon fanart on the internet. When you associate it with that sort of content, you also associate with the theme and ideas of that content, and much of the themes and idea of the more shall we say 'crude' fanart has a very clear sexual nature to it.

The perception of quality has a heightened level of sensitivity. When I wish to discuss various Pokémon events on forums, blogs, etc. I've been linking to Pokébeach because I feel it's a credible site whose profile is worth being heightened. However, with the new banner a few people have already asked me 'wtf' with regards to the banner, and I haven't bothered to defend it. It looks ridiculous. It is ridiculous. (I'm linking to another site entirely for the time being, by the way.)

I don't see how at all, and I think you're failing to understand how association works, especially on the internet. For example, drawing an anthropomorphic fanart character and posting it on the internet will often cause you to be labelled as a furry, and alongside that accusations of sexual deviancy, etc. Given the nature of this illustration it's barely a stretch to associate it with certain Japanese fanworks of a sexual nature.

I actually give you credit for getting off of the site with your daughter if she could not "handle" the banner.

While my kids thought it was "cool" and took it as a homage to the PETM trainer (which has been mentioned here as well).

If you don't like the site, don't go.

I will give Jon credit for having extremely entertaining banners over the years. The artwork is really cool.

This one, may not be for everyone, but still, a cool banner.

We all have to make choices with respect to what our kids see, and do on the internet.

The issue is audience.

Where a certain "Lafonte" board may have the best deck help, and discussion anywhere in the world, along with the Underground, and a few others, I wouldn't let my 13 year old view THOSE sites, because they are geared for a teenage set.

That's probably the trouble you are going to have with Jon. He is not trying to make his site Disney, and acceptable for 5-7 year olds. He is trying to attract the 12+ crowd, which likes some edge from time to time. He may lose you, but he will retain his following I am sure.

It's a funny picture. If I remember correctly, there's worse in the TV show (or at least used to be) and that was about as G rated as you could possibly get.

JandPDS, I completely understand your concern - my parents never used to let my brothers and I watch Power Rangers when we were little because of the "violence." However, I don't really think the banner is that bad. A lot of times in the show Grass Pokemon have wrapped up trainers with Vine Whip to trap them (Chikorita). Jessie's hair has been burned and "on fire" countless times - haven't you seen her afro before (Cyndaquil)? Totodile biting Elm's hand is, as people pointed out, a reference to Elm's Training Method. Heck, Electric Pokemon literally shock people all the time. And there has been a lot "worse" in the show and movies before, though I don't consider any of it to be bad.

As for the blood, it's just a dash of it. Blood is in your daughter's body and your body. If a Totodile were to bite your hand, there would be blood (unless you're an alien). Blood is blood. It's not like the blood is dripping down her arm with a puddle on the floor. Or that Cyndaquil is boiling her hand off or flamethrowing her Totodile wound. Or that Chikorita is cutting off her fingers with Razor Leaf. Or that Totodile is dragging its teeth along her arm. It could have been a lot worse.

My site is geared (or I try to gear it) toward all age groups. Sometimes I think it's okay to do something a little radical. I'm sorry your daughter was a little put off by the image, but there were countless more people who liked it. I agree with you about how the world is a lot more evil nowadays - kids are always drinking, taking drugs, there's a lot of unnecessary violence, wars, etc., but it's JUST a cartoony image. I'm all for anti-evil, but in this case I don't think it's that bad.

When I went to Tokyo's Pokemon Center I talked to someone who worked on the show and is eventually going to work on the movies and he said that they get complaints about everything when Pokemon movies air or when the games come out. There will ALWAYS be someone who finds SOMETHING offensive. I hate it how companies always dumb-down things for that type of minority, which is why if I ever go into the movie industry, I will treat parent and child equally. Cartoons and franchises always treat kids like morons - like they can't handle a little blood or some serious themes - and I won't be like that.

ArrEmmDee, just BLOCK the image - I guess some people see widely different things in art. I highly doubt anyone looks at an image like that and thinks it's something sexual. If you are thinking that, maybe it's just best you block it.

Again, that's not why I think the art should be removed (please note think the art should be removed; thinking, wanting, and getting are three entirely different concepts) the art should be removed. Please read my posts, I would do the same if the situation were reversed.

I'm really just posting to point out that in order to see anything sexual in that image, your view on the subject material must already be skewed beyond belief from darker parts of the internet. What kind of Pokémon fan art do YOU normally look at? :B No innocent mind is going to see that image and instantly think "bondage", nor is anyone who isn't actively looking to make that connection in anything they see. :|

Dang, I remember reading Pokemon comics/manga a long time ago and this Charizard was all like beast and stuff, and then it was all like biting this other Charizard's neck, and then it was bloody. This thread sorta makes me feel guilty now, like I read some R-Rated Pokemon material, lol.

For serious though, there's been more violent Pokemon images published officially than what's up on Pokebeach as a fan-art. I think some Pokedex entries paint some graphic images, I think I recall Nidoking crushes it's prey with it's tail or something?

I'm no parent, but I do look after a younger family member on occasion. This is coming from an inexperienced 17 year old, but I don't think I'd let a young child on the computer on their own in the first place. Not that I know many 5ish who care what's on the internet... But it's seriously too easy to get into questionable material, even when you're innocently doing something else like schoolwork. So not to call into question the OP's parenting, but you see how offensive the internet can be when left with a child unattended. I wonder if WPM even cares if his website could be subject to parental control blocks? Lol.

As for the bondage thing, anyone who sees that is a raging hormonal teenager who spends far too much time viewing such perverted materials and needs a better hobby than Pokemon since it's just encouraging the habit every time a Bulbasaur uses vinewhip.

You know what surprises me? That we're bothered about this when there are thousends or far worse Pokemon pictures on other sites. WPM has already stated that he won't remove the image. What is there to talk about now? If you don't like the image then don't go to his site again. If you don't mind the image then carry on going to it. I don't see what arguing/talking about it is going to do.
