Post-Regionals Scenarios: Rule changes? Rotation? Metagame shift?

As Regionals approaches, it's safe to say that a massive metagame shift could be in the works. The way I see it, there are 3 scenarios that could potentially take place, all of which seem to be format-warping:

Scenario A) Rule changes are introduced when the Black & White set is released, and there is no mid-season rotation.

Scenario B) Black & White is released, but the implementation of the new rules is postponed until September 2011 when the new season begins, fresh with a new rotation.

Scenario C) Black & White is released, and so are it's corresponding rule changes, and we see a mid-season rotation to thwart a Battle Roads/Nationals/Worlds donkfest.

My question to the Pokegym community is simply this: What will happen to the metagame in each scenario? I'll answer my own question:

In Scenario A, I think we see an overwhelming amount of donk decks surface. Most (though not all) top players have generally steered clear of the unstable nature of decks like UxieDonk. However, much of that chance disappears when you're no longer dependent on a coin flip to determine whether your deck can function. T1 collector + Flash Bites + Unown Dark + Overconfident becomes the most common winning formula.

In Scenario B, I think Gyarados usurps Luxchomp as the BDIF and dominates the format. Pokemon Catcher will allow the Gyarados player to pull up the Luxchomp player's Lucario GL up to 4 times per game, or more when Junk Arm is factored in. Luxchomp players won't be able to rescue Lucario GL every single turn, and thus Luxray will have to settle for a 2HKO on Gyarados.

In Scenario C, BDIF is anyone's guess. Reshiram/Emboar looks to have potential, as does Zekrom/Pachirisu COL/Shaymin UL in a format with no power lock. Donphan gains strength with Gyara out of the way. Kingra Prime finds a 1-0-1 home in many decks as the nouveau " Flash Bite". Other BW and HGSS-era cards become viable deck options, and the format is refreshed.

As an avid card seller on ebay with an extensive collection of MD-On cards, this pains me to say, but... I think Scenario C would be the best for the game. Thoughts?

It won't be C. I'm expecting that it is going to be A.

It won't be A. i am expecting that it is going to be C.

see what i did there? ;)

C just makes the most competitive sense. No one likes being donked, so my guess is that the TCG will err on the side of virtually eradicating the donkfest decks rather than make them one of the most annoying BDIF's of all time...

I got donked three times at TX states. I just wanted to throw my cards at random people at the end of it all.

I forgot to add this - most of the people I've talked to at my League want it to be Scenario B. Among my group of friends, excitement for the new CARDS is high, while excitement for the new RULES is very low.

I am hoping for B or C, I think A would hurt the game and discourage any new players from getting involved, no one likes to lose before they even get a turn

I'd say that Scenario B is the one that's probably going to happen, while scenario C is the one that everybody (including myself) would like. I have to say, I'm sick of seeing decks like SP and Gengar at the top tables for more than 2 years. They've had there time, give it to another deck.

I don't really want a rule change or a mid season rotation. A rule change and no rotation would be awful.

they already anounced that when the new set comes out that black and white rules WILL apply i highly doubt there will be a mid season rotation but u never know so expect new rules with the same sets

Link? You sure you haven't been reading an April Fool's Day joke?

Call me crazy, but this seems like the Lostgar hype all over again....

....which was like the Vilegar hype...

...which was like every other hype that's ever happened.

We already have a lot of donk decks that are hard to get around...doesn't really change much. Yes, Sableye does make it worse, but still, that means that the opposing player has to start Sableye for it to work....with four in the deck, that only gives them a 40% chance of starting with one....since a coin toss is always 50/50, not much changes.

While Gyarados does seem quite threatening in scenario B, its easily thwarted by trainer locking and using Pokemon that CAN OHKO Gyarados without weakness (yes, there are quite a bit). If this ruins SP, Luxchomp in particular, but, does anyone REALLY care that we have a non SP dominated format? If this happens, SP looses strength, Gyarados MAY be BDIF, trainer lock stays popular, and we see new decks to counter the meta shift...who knows, all of those Amphoros Primes we've been giving away might become good.

Scenario C is interesting. Reshiram/Emboar does seem awesome, but again, we are looking at Japan's format. Donphan definitely has potential. Nerfing candy and Pokemon Catcher will pretty much keep Kingra tech in check. Assuming Charizard stays in, it may become a very good deck. If fire decks do become prominent, I guess it depends on what our rotations would look like. RR on makes the most sense at this point, but there are a ton of rumors/thoughts/hopes that start at SF on all the way to HGSS on. Personally, I think it would be awesome to get Platinum out, we would see a ton of new decks with old cards. If Reshiram/Emboar is BDIF and we keep SV, I think it would be awesome to see Swampert make a rise.

Of course, the OTHER option is, Pokemon bans a few cards. We get the new rules and we don't get a rotation, banning Gyarados and Sableye seems like a VERY simple fix. Will this happen? Lol, its seems way to simple of a fix at this point. I am VERY intrigued to see how it all plays out.

As for banning cards, if they didn't ban Gardevoir during the 07-08 season, the only time in history where a deck dominated the format such as Plox (take all the tier one wins and add them together and you have the winnings of a GG/Plox build) it will never happen now.

I didn't play then, so I can't say as to why it should or should not have been banned. But, correct me if I'm wrong, Gardevoir was a new card then that was to be in the format for a while, was it not? Yes, it did dominate for a while, but there was always the potential to be knocked off. Stormfront is on its way out anyway and everyone will agree, the set has so many broken cards in it, its unreal. Banning a "new" card makes little sense as future formats will (may) put it in check.

I can't see it being C at all, that would not only piss off too many people, but confuse just about everyone as well.

Sure there is a valid concern with donk if you look at first turn being able to play trainers again, but it's nothing no one isn't used to if they've been in the game long enough and actually remember a time where you could play trainers T1. So yeah, I'm welcoming that change actually XD

I'm seeing A as the likely scenario obviously, B as a distant 2nd since Japan already is using BW rules and it'd be best to implement them more evenly so Worlds is a level playing field, and C...I just don't see C happening at all; that's more of the mad scientist/doomsday scenario imo. Sure, people would eventually adapt if C went through, and you'd have your usual amount of "qq I'm quitting" posts, but it'd just be too much of a hassle to implement and explain imo.

I hope its c but it wont be c, ill take a over b then, that would at least be fun, pokemon ftw weeks.

And @the guy above me

No hype, just uxedonk that always can do its stuff t1, that deck kills 4 pokemon turn 1 PERIOD. And with sableye you can go first more often and alwys win t1. Sounds fun :D
