Preleases running out of Promos

Here's your first step: Talk to the PTO.
Ask what happened.
Based on what the say, proceed from there.

PTO's do the best that they can. Supplies are limited. We have run short of Promo's at our last 3 prereleases in our League store, not just this one. But when you gt 100 players on a Saturday and 50 more on a Sunday stuff liek that is going to happen. IF you want to make sure you get a promo then make usre you get early in line at the first prelease in your area, or you can usually trade for one fairly easily. Most collectors just want one for the binder and will be willing to trase extras. Although this one will be different.

Well that was the other issue that kind of left me with a sour taste. My brother asked one of the store employees the night before the tournament what time registration was. They told my brother 11AM-12PM, and he shows up probably 11:40 maybe a bit later and was told it was 11-11:30 but they would still let him in. The 10 or so people who didn't get promos got there after 11:30 had we known registration was 11-11:30 he certainly would have been there before than and probably got a promo.

Good advice and will do.

Maybe they planned registration for 11-12. But closed registration at 1130 BECAUSE they ran out of promos.

Based on my experience as a former PTO there was one prerelease series that I was shorted promos by TPCi. It didn't happen often, but it does happen. I gave away every promo I had except 1 staff promo, and asked Masters players if they would mind not receiving theirs so all the younger players would get one. I can't think of a single PTO that I know who would deliberately hold back promos for their own use. They are too interested in growing the game than to be that selfish.

I wouldn't be surprised if they kept the promos, just saying.

What an insulting and ignorant thing to say about people you dont even know. Your ignorance toward others is getting a little carried away. For you to just throw out silly little comments like this can put peoples jobs in jeopardy. Just who do you think you are??? Be careful who you start pushing because someone may just push back.

Jay, If I have any left after my releases, I will gladly send you what you are missing. I'm pro like that!

Aren't we over-reacting a bit? It was a silly (and ignorant) off-hand comment that he obviously regrets making now. No need to keep harping on it.

Although I can't say this is correct practice for other PTOs, if it were the PTO, and I ran out of promos, I'd offer the following:

1. Refund
2. Left-over promo, box from a previous pre-release

The "while supplies last" disclaimer, without allowing the customer a choice, is a cop-out, and IMO, is not good customer service.

Just wondering but how much of a refund? I would only give $5.

Well, a full refund if they aren't going to play. If they still got the packs of cards (6 or 8), then they ARE still getting something. 8 packs for 25 bucks is already a decent deal.

Yeah cause The deck box and the promo are kind of something extra. Because Retail price is somewhere around $4 for each pack and you are getting 8 so it is $32 that's already a great deal.

Like AnUnown said. Full refund AND drop (no boosters).

I wouldn't do a partial refund because there's no compensation (that I'm aware of) from TPCi to the PTO for shortages, so the PTO can't really eat the cost of a partial refund.

The idea here is that unforseen attendance caused the shortage, but customers need to have a choice. Merely having a "Buyer Beware" disclaimer is poor customer service, in this kind of situation. I imagine most PTOs out there want happy customers; therefore, handling promo shortages should involve "customer satisfaction" decisions by these PTOs.

I appreciate the offer Jimmy, but as you know my brother and I are hardly "hurting" for cards. I was more interested in finding out if this is an issue with our TO as simply as ordering more or if this common nationwide. I really would just like to have this avoided in the future.

If it was an option, then i'd offer them an extra booster pack after the event.

as one of my fellow PTOs stated above, when ordering for prereleases we are capped as to how much we can order to the number at our previous prerelease + X percent.

placing prerelease orders is always a 'gamble': how much do i order? will attendance continue to go up? or will players see the leaked early scans and decide to stay away, leaving me with tons of leftover product i have to pay for or return?

if attendance spikes at a prerelease series nationwide, TPCi can find themselves 'short' on prerelease promo items for the NEXT set as those are ordered/produced well in advance. when this happens PTOs can find that they are not able to get the full number of promo items ordered as there are not enough to go around. that's why most if not all of us have 'while supplies last' in our prerelease information.

for example: i had enough deckboxes/promos for 66 players for my prerelease yesterday, though i had enough product to supply 75. i put out 66 reg slips and before my advertised registration window closed, they were GONE. those who arrived after the cap was hit were told they could still register but would NOT get promos/deckboxes. i ended up with 72 players; i had had *54* at this location for DEX.

i'm sorry your brother was told the wrong registration time by the people in the store. what does the info on the tourney locator say? sometimes employees are not as aware of tourney info as one would hope; i'd check with the PTO and/or the tourney info on the pokemon.com site in future.

I think that's pretty fair.

I was never sure if the PTOs had to pay for the promos they were shipped, but reading the above, I guess you do, and hope to make it back on entries?

I think I am going to have to start putting disclaimers on my post for you, it was a silly comment that was not meant to be taken seriously. It its quite obvious that you do not like me, shame.

I do not regret it caz it was a josh, nothing more. btw, I agree with your statement

For those who were offered I apologize as you deserve at least that

On Topic: If it was me running it and I was short, I would do what ever I can to make sure that the people who were shorted would ether walk away happy(via Extra booster, discount, or left over supplies) or get a full refund or maybe a voucher of some kind. Costumer satisfaction should be number one priority around events where you give product.

Just some advice: When you call someone a liar and a thief, don't be surprised when they take offense.
Saying "Just kidding" doesn't change it from being an insult.

This is the bare minimum I'd expect from the PTO (tell players before they register that the promos/boxes are gone, then let them choose whether to register or not).

The better approach would be to also offer a substitution if they do register. Heck, I missed the DEX prerelease and would love to get that promo (for my collection) at an over-crowded Dragon prerelease.

Offering a booster pack is a bit too much, IMO. Nevertheless, "more power to" the PTO who would choose to do that.
