Ps3 or Xbox 360?

Worldwide, PS3 beats 360 by about as much as the 360 beats PS3 in US sales. The main problem being Japan where the 360 for the most part hardly sells at all - but in their case a large portion of that is the Japanese don't want to buy an American product over a Japanese one. It's similar to the many Americans who refuse to look at non-US brand cars.

In response to DEOXEYS: The blu-ray drive is really not quite all it's cracked up to be for gaming. Yeah, it's nice having that extra space but for the most part, games aren't even filling the 9GB that regular DVDs afford them. Look how few multi-disc 360 games there are. Assassin's Creed was a PC game ported to 360 - nearly all PC games get trimmed down in some way or another when ported to consoles. The only PS3 games that even come close to filling the blu-ray discs do stupid things to do so... for example, about 75% of the data on Metal Gear Solid 4's blu-ray disc is uncompressed audio, which is so mortifyingly stupid it's obvious they did it just so they could brag about how they nearly filled the disc for PR reasons.

Other than the capacity of the blu-ray drive and the standardised hard drive (not the capacity - the fact that every PS3 has a hard drive means games can install data to said hard drive, 360 games are not allowed to require installation with very few exceptions e.g. MMORPGs), PS3 doesn't really have much over 360 specifications wise, and those two factors only make a difference for a distinct minority of games.

Where are you guys getting these numbers from? The numbers that I'm seeing has the Xbox with a sizable worldwide advantage over the PS3 (and the Wii having nearly as much as both combined).

Doesn't all versions of the Xbox have an installed hard drive also?

No. The "Arcade" edition (as well as the original green-boxed release) does not include a hard drive.

Edit: I'm double-checking on the numbers now. At the very least, though, here's a couple of spiffy graphs showing the sales trends in the US...

Addendum: Found YTD numbers for the US, at least.

Code:
YTD
Wii: 4,017,100
360: 2,391,500
PS3: 1,943,500
PS2: 1,145,800

edit/addendum 2!:

These are the LTD (lifetime to date) sales in the US for the consoles. PS3 sits under 10m, 360 is over 15m... the difference is around 7-8m units in the US. PS3 is enjoying a small surge right now because of the Slim. We'll have to see if that trend lasts.

I'll dig for worldwide or at least overseas numbers later...

What about the worldwide numbers? I know that vgchartz.com isn't exactly the most accurate place, but it's usually in the ballpark of what's actually happening. What I'm seeing there is that the Xbox has approximately a 7 million advantage worldwide (give or take 30% difference), while the Wii more than doubled the PS3, and is about 4 million short of matching the combined totals of PS3 and Xbox.

WOW, using google to search for "video game console sales" sure is hard!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Console_wars (scroll down to "current generation")

I'd like to point out that, unless you are involved in the business of video games, these sales mean next to nothing. Video game designers usually don't pick the best selling system unless they are hacks (shovelware on wii). You should choose a video game system on the games and what you want to play, not how popular it is or what other people say. What kind of games do you like? Do you want the online community of Xbox live or the free play (yet seriously less impressive) granted by the PS3? Do you want to look at potential future titles (Kingdom Hearts 3, Halo 4 etc) or are you getting it to game in the present. These are the choices that matter, not sales. Sales are just a justification for more stupid, petty fanboy wars.

Actually, they *do* mean something. Square realized that the PS3 simply wasn't selling as well, so they pulled exclusivity on FF13 and made it multiplat. There are several other PS2 exclusives that went multiplat in this gen. Traditionally, game developers gravitate towards the system(s) that has the highest sales, or at least away from the one that is clearly faltering. In this generation, the enormous early success of the Xbox and the incredible hype of the Wii has caused many PS2 exclusive developers to either turn multiplat or go exclusive with one of the other two consoles.

Companies definitely do look at the consoles' sales. The highest-selling console of every generation until this one has consistently had more developer attention - not just from the hacks but from the big companies too.

This generation is the first exception because of the horsepower margin between the Wii and 360/PS3, which is why there's so much discussion based around the 360/PS3 situation. The 360 has the most developer mindshare this gen.

Ps3 is better if you're looking into playing online since its free. Both 360 and Ps3 have collectibles, but I prefer trophies since they're catergorized better than 360's point system.

Both have good libraries, but it depends on your taste in games.

If you like Multiplayer action then 360 has Left4Dead 2

If you like Action/ Adventure then Ps3 has Uncharted Series

Both have big time shooters (360-Halo and ps3-Killzone 2)

The choice is yours.

$5 a month too expensive for better online?

How exactly? PS3 has different trophies and levels you can get, where the 360 has achievements where each one yields points. Sony attempted to copy the 360's achievement system and made a more clunky system, imo.

aight

all fair enough

The choice is yours.

Also: video game sales mean nothing to the consumer. This isn't a thread about how sales effect's which platform a game is on; we're talking about the consumer. Yes, some people buy what the crowd is buying, but that has no relevance whatsoever with the quality of the system or the game it's on.

Suggestion:

Lots of places allow you to rent consoles and the like. Rent the two and some games and see which one you like better. I'm pretty much unbaised since I have a 360 and a PS3, and each have pros and cons.

I would have rented if i had enough money to do that and then decide but after i rented all the stuff i would still have to buy the console some of us just dont have the money.

Where?? Where I live there are no places that rent systems. They stopped doing that around the time the N64 came out. The issue was people where stealing them or simply not taking care of them because it was just a rental.

There's, like, 5 or 6 different places where I live that still rent out consoles. That's kinda strange there's not anywhere near you, considering I live in BFE pretty much lol.

You might try Hastings if there's one near you; I know they do (well here they do anyway)

People please dont let this thread die so fast i want to keep this a lively debate about why to get one system over the other.

>_>; it's generally a better idea to let the console war die out

Man im not trying to make a war lol i just thought that it had to be a decent debate i could not figure out which one i wanted when i first got in the store so i thought this thread could help people decide between the two.
