Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Richmond VA Regional Championship - Sandston, VA 4/18/09

I want to thank all the players for coming and attending the event. We had players from VA, MD, NC, SC, and IL. I also want to thank the players for their patience for a much longer than expected day (as you can tell from previous posts already).

A HUGE THANKS to all the staff for all their help after an extremely long day (and frustrating at times). You were all absolutely amazing and it was an honor to work with you!!!

I wish we had a "magic and quick" solution with what occurred with the software. Unfortunately it was one of those things that you do the best you can to try to resolve as quick as possible...but sometimes it ends up not being so quick. The situation we experienced was one of those flukes that we had never seen before and nobody else had either or was experiencing at other Regionals. Hindsight is always 20/20 and as you look back you see things you can improve on in the future. I won't go into any other details...We expected there to be a lot of complaints after Sat and even when you do the best you can there will always be complaints on how you did it........
On the positive side you guys had the fastest registration/deck checking that I've ever seen at any event. There was never a line.

Can anyone post the top4 results for seniors and masters???
i went to bed due to my dad fussing at me and didn't find the results.....

Masters was...

1. Kevin N. (Palkia G "Lock")
2. Michael P. (Manectric/SP stuff)
3/4. Michael R. (Dialga G/SP stuff) and Elissa H. (GeChamp)

That's 3 out of the top 4 from NC (yeah!). :thumb:

Unfortunately, I have no idea about the results for the Seniors division.

I have no idea how my brother won against Pramawat. Palkia G vs. Manectric/G stuff?! He even told me all about it and I still don't get it. @_@

It probably went something like this:

Game one: Mike goes first, flips over electrike, draws, attaches, passes.
Kevin flips over palkia, draws his card, thinks for about twenty minutes, says, "uh, hold on...I think I got this," then drops a pluspower, a water, an energy gain, a baltoy, a candy, and a claydol. Plays a bucks from his hand, drops a crobat G, claydols, uses poketurn, drops crobat G again, lays another pluspower just to make sure, and FTKO's the electrike for the game.

Game two: Mike elects to go second, flips over another electrike. Kevin draws his starting seven, looks at the cards for awhile, goes, "woah, dude....how did that get in there? I don't, like, even know what this card does, but okay." Flips over a tech lunatone that he wasn't aware was in his deck, attaches a fighting, drops all 4 crobat G's, and GG's Mike. Kevin then proceeds to apologize and use that classic Kevin Nance line:

"Dude, I, like, never get this lucky."

Yes, you do, Kevin. Yes you do. And we love you for it.

Most of us, anyway.

Well, at least some of the time we do.

/jealous.

We expected there to be a lot of complaints after Sat and even when you do the best you can there will always be complaints on how you did it

Although the majority of masters were slightly upset about the inconvience.......I think all of us were very glad, that we were not you and your staff in this situation, it's always easier to blame then appreciate a difficult ordeal. I would think that if everything went without a hitch, then there would be nothing but props for this event. To prove my point.......my 10yr old was nothing but happy knowing that she received 9 packs for finishing outside of top cut and now wants to go to Reg's once a month!!! (all due to a coinflip). That pretty much sums up my veiw point of why I go. Congrad's to the top finishers in all divisions and sorry fir my sappy pokedad post.....but that's my take, and there you go.:thumb:

Thx Jeff/Feraligatr! As the MAs HJ, I felt Jeff's pain on the computer issue. I was on my cell trying to find a possible solution to the glitch we had. I wont go into details, but I will say podding was the only way we could get this baby going.

A super thanks to all the players, esp. the MAs. I know a few of you grumbled, but dealt with the delay as adults. We as staff appreciate that more than you knowQ

Wasn't deck checks the best? 200 decks done in less than 75 mins and hardly ever more than a 5 min wait for anyone? Everything was set up to rock and roll a SUPER event and the MAs computer slowed us down. We still had a SUPER event, it just turned into an extended party until 330 a.m. for the end of t2.

Keith

Deck checks were AMAZING!

Staff worked SO hard at this event and it's such a shame that there were issues beyond their control came into play.

As a masters player I had a blast and want to say thanks again to all those who worked so hard.

Kevin was the man! Folks were calling the "Zigzagoon" pod whe "easy" pod, but looks like Zig had the last laugh, eh? :lol

/jealous.

At the end of the day, I was a bit jealous too. I played the same list Kevin did and went 4-2, getting 13th (top 8's for the 2 pods). I was looking for a repeat, but it just didn't happen. For me, it wasn't a great day. Computer issues put a strain on everyone, my starting hands were mediocre all day long, I nearly froze during one match when I sat directly underneath a very cold air vent, and I faced an extremely rude opponent who, to put it simply, put a damper on my day.

But let's be fair here. I made a couple of bad misplays against Elissa in Round 6 that might have cost me the game, and while I made those misplays, my brother didn't. In fact, Kevin even played Elissa in the top 4, and after their game she made the comment that he simply "didn't make a misplay." I don't know how things looked from Pramawat's side, but Kevin knew he had a tough match ahead of him going into the top 2. And trust me Jake, I know how lucky Kevin can be sometimes (playtesting with him usually feels like torture, haha), but luck had nothing to do with his Regionals win. He was on fire all day long, and I'm sure he didn't make any misplays, even while most of the players in attendance were either sleeping or on a long drive back home (3 AM zzz....). The fact is, Kevin knew his deck, had confidence in it, and played it perfectly.

It's too bad you weren't there though, it would've been nice to see you again. :frown:

One more thing. I just want to give my thanks to the judges and staff at this event. I know a lot of people still have a bad taste in their mouth from all of the computer issues and whatnot. My own personal experience tells me that the staff did everything in their power to correct the situation and keep things running as smoothly as possible. The staff at this even was top-notch, and even though things got frustrating, I know that they did their best with every situation. Remember, they didn't want to be up at 3:30 AM either, so they toughed it out every step of the way. Thanks to you for all of your hard work!

I had a good time and it was good to have been a part of this.

Props
-Dylan A and Sue S who came to the event and then showed up to league in Lusby on Sunday 12:00pm. Getting home at 4:40am, I thought I was gonna be the only person at Regionals who would go to league.
-Getting to meet Kieth. He's mastered the art of judging. Definitely the kind of person I'd want judging at one of my events.
-Kieth backing me up in the Top16.
-Brian L, for running Metagross in his Machamp deck. Don't have a basic active? Well you're about to...
-Pizza Hut for dinner
-The vendor had lots of stuff
-Having a thorough judge's meeting
-Players who had a good time in spite of what happened
-Players who bring other players with them to tournaments
-New Manectric/Ampharos deck
-Judges
-Players coming with modified-legal decks

Slops
-All the players who were missing from their matches. What's up with that?
-Not being able to go back to Lusby the same way I came

It probably went something like this:

Game one: Mike goes first, flips over electrike, draws, attaches, passes.
Kevin flips over palkia, draws his card, thinks for about twenty minutes, says, "uh, hold on...I think I got this," then drops a pluspower, a water, an energy gain, a baltoy, a candy, and a claydol. Kevin then proceeds to apologize and use that classic Kevin Nance line:

"Dude, I, like, never get this lucky."
:lol::lol:

Additional Props:
*no line at deck check
Yeah, it's great that we had lots of people on staff to do this.

I want to thank all the players for coming and attending the event. We had players from VA, MD, NC, SC, and IL.
WV, TN

even when you do the best you can there will always be complaints on how you did it........
:)

I have run plenty of tests on TOM and run plenty of tournaments with TOM in the past, I can confirm this. There is no way Jeff could have forseen this. Nobody could have known this was going to happen. I'm glad we came out of this in one piece.

  • I got to spread joy with my Psychic Bind Reminder Cards

  • Props

Angelica shuffling in her cards during extended time because she heard "TIME!" and only had to attack to even the prize count! That gets, both, a :nonono: and a
:frown:Having to see this was the low point of my day. Otherwise, good match.

My first round top cut match was a mirror in which case we finished 2 rounds of our best of 3 match in under 5 minutes. The last round lasted over 45 minutes and all came down to coin flips. I then get taken out in under 25 minutes in the top 8 rounds. I get top 8.
I remember this match. That was fun. I love the term your opponent used "Champ donk-fest".

PUI deciding to use an untested TOM at such a large tourney
Technically, it was tested. But I know what you mean.

Waiting an hour to play a game that took like 5 secs to play
    You are not alone.

Can't wait for the report! Congratulations. One day, I'll play in NC/VA I hope.

It would be great if you'd come to VA sometime, 'snore.

^ Trust me... you NEVER want to play in a tourney like this one, it SUCKED!

So you could have done a better job, eh? Why not try running a few tournaments yourself and proving it to us, then?

*Junior division chanting doing set up before two rounds. It was cute the first time, but then do it again? (Yeah, I know most of them were probably mine. It's always one of mine. Always.)

I'll admit it, the second time it was my idea. Why? These were small kids, who were extremely tense and excited, most of them had access to sugar and caffeine, and they were being forced to sit down and not play. All of them appeared to be moments away from destroying the chairs. The screaming gave them a way to blow off some steam.

At least you were on the other side of the room.

I want to thank all the players for coming and attending the event. We had players from VA, MD, NC, SC, IL, and WV.

Fixed. :lol::cool:

Sappy or not, great post. I have to agree with Shadowcard, if there were no slops, I'd be seriously worried.

A super thanks to all the players, esp. the MAs. I know a few of you grumbled, but dealt with the delay as adults. We as staff appreciate that more than you knowQ

Absolutely. The non-complainers seemed to outnumber the complainers, which was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Wonderful post, Erik. Thanks a lot for being understanding about the situation.

Considering the computer issues, I was amazed by how smoothly the event ran. During deck checks I was seriously wondering what happened to all the players. The fast registration was, IMO, mostly due to the large number of players who had decklists filled out ahead of time, legal cards, unmarked card sleeves, and sorted decks. Thanks so much for being prepared; you'd be surprised by how much time is usually spent on re-checking rejected decks. Also, it was great of Jeff to have theme decks ready for new players (even if the theme decks are bad...).
The delays to the Masters division were entirely due to software problems, Jeff and Toni did everything they could have to get the tournament started. I'm sincerely sorry that everyone had to wait so long, as well.

Also, everyone who thinks there's no skill in Juniors and Seniors must be living under a rock, 'cause some of these kids are definitely high-caliber players. I'm pretty sure that Kenneth A. would be more than a match for most Masters, and IIRC he's still got another year in Juniors.

Thanks to everyone for coming, and in particular all of the players who were so understanding about the delays. Also, a huge thanks to the parents as well. I honestly don't recall anyone complaining about a ruling or getting in the way, so thanks so much for making my job that much easier.

Props:

Judging Regionals. I couldn't really believe it until the start of the tournament.
All the staff for doing such a good job.
Everybody else, for driving however many miles to come play a children's card game. Pokeymanz? That's that fad from 1998, right?
Everybody who brought snacks and soda. Mountain Dew is just that necessary.
Tim (C.) and Tara in particular, for being so easy to work with. You guys rock!
Good sportsmanship.
Meeting Lawman.
Solving difficult problems simply by being a weirdo.
The vendor. There was some awesomely cool miscellaneous Pokemon merchandise there.
Lots of space. No tables crammed everywhere, no smooshy crowds.
My MD players beat Tara's MD players.

Slops:
The Professor Program.
TOM.
Low Junior division attendance.
All the cool stuff being sold out by the time I got a chance to leave the play area.
G decks.
The constant "Can we start yet?" calls.
Website rivalries, and being caught in them.
Curran being sick.
Michael R. not coming.

Juniors T4:
1st: Kenneth A.
2nd: Logan C.
3rd/4th: Carter C. and Alex F.
(and congrats to 5th place finisher Joseph M. as well)

Seniors T4: (IIRC)
1st: Kennan M. (undefeated 9-0!!!)
2nd: Alex ?.
3rd/4th: Alexander B. and Curran H.

You get used to it after knowing Ninetales for a while :biggrin:mad:Ninetales

For various personal reasons, I have chosen to be a man of few words on these forums. There is much that could be said here, but I will try to keep it short and sweet.

It is adversity that tests and defines success much more than a clear and smooth path. I believe this to be true in life whether it is in a personal or professional capacity.

To put this in Pokemon terms, our regional PTO was dealt a lone Unown G start, but methodically and with the persistence and determination that only comes with veteran experience, turned this in to a hard fought, six prizes taken winner. Through out my time in Pokemon, the hard fought win has always been more rewarding than the donk, especially this season. Jeff thanks for looking past the tough start and seeing through to the win.

Congrats not only to the winners, but to those dedicated players and staff who face the perfect hand or the lone tech start with equal dedication and determination. There are so many to thank, but I just want to thank Keith, Nick, and David for being part of the Masters judging team. To get back to my original plan of keeping this short, I want to give one last thank you again to Jeff and Toni for letting me be a part of the staff for this regional.

I’d like to thank all the staff and judges for their efforts. It was a long tournament, and they were there longer than most of us, the players. The late start time for Masters was frustrating but caused by unforeseen problems. That’s always hard. The judges and staff did their best to get things running as soon as possible. It’s easy to gripe and complain, but sometimes we’re all at the mercy of the computer.

Everything else ran well. Deck check was awesome, and rounds, once going, moved steadily with the exception of the round before the raffle. The raffle was over-the-top, but the thought of giving so much stuff away shouldn’t go unappreciated. It was just too long.

Congratulations to all the winners, top-cutters, and prize winners!

Props
Junior Judges, especially Helen M. and Tara M. It can be difficult dealing with younger kids at times, and you all do a great job of that.
Jimmy M. for making a well deserved T8 in Seniors.
Kennan M. for winning Seniors.
Venue -- spacious and clean. I like having elbowroom.
Kevin N. for the Master’s win. Our Swiss game was one of the best matches I’ve ever had, and you were very pleasant to talk with. It was nice meeting you.
Vendor – had some cool stuff at reasonable prices.
David T. for organizing the Friday night league and bringing cake, snacks, and drinks!
SotG - all my opponents were really nice, even in the later hours when fatigue started to set in.
Friendliness – almost all the people I chatted with were really friendly, making the wait in the beginning and the late hours much more tolerable.
Juniors for the most part being such a nice group of kids.
Dads and moms putting in 15-hour days, so their kids can play Pokemon and having such a good attitude about it.
Meeting some really cool people.

Thanks,

Yeah, the computer crashing was pretty bad. Other than that, it was a pretty good tourney.

No doubt about it. I used to buy a lot of additional prizes just for league events and know that the items given out add up to be quite expensive. When some players were quick to say that they know what kind of feedback they'd be leaving for POP to read, I felt bad that about it. A lot of time and thought goes into buying such prizes, which was unfortunately overshadowed by the rough time getting Masters going and the execution of distributing the prizes.

For example, starting in Juniors, the players were coming up to get the items. By the time it got to Masters, the staff caught on to take the prize to the players which kept the raffle moving compared to Juniors where it seemed stagnant. So, props to the staff for learning and being dynamic rather than thinking nothing could be done to better the operation :thumb:

Slops:
having all the good players in my pod.

I have two thoughts on this.

First, given the choice, I would much rather be in the harder pod personally. As I told Pika, "more points to steal." But in all seriousness, those "hard" games are usually the most fun for me win or lose and many of the "good players" are "good people" as well and it's usually a pleasure to to hang out with them let alone play them.

Second, the "easy" Zigzagoon pod produced the event's winner, Kevin Nance. Regardless of how hard our pod was Zigs got the last laugh. Kevin had to play 4 of the better "hard" Pod players in top cut to win.

@ Nick: it was nice to work w/ you. I always have my judges' back!

@ ShadowCard: Yeah...sorta Kodak-y moment. Nick is a good fella. I'll be able to really whip him into shape in a few years

@ all the folks giving me prop: Thx for the kind words folks. it means alot!

Keith

Jav summed it up! Any PTOs worst nightmare is having a mega-event with a dysfunctional computer(s). Jeff, thank you for the patience, wisdom, and level-headedness to work us through that nightmare. None of us wanted to pod because we knew that some players would be upset, but it really did become our only option. I'd like to think that I would have been able to maintain my composure as well as Jeff did had I been the PTO of record, but I really don't know if I would have held it together.
There is a great deal to be said for experience in this game. Players see that all the time, but it also shows up in the event-organization area. There is a reason why TPCi puts Jeff on point as stage manager at their big events. Jeff, my neighbor to the South, you continue to be a mentor to me. We make it through, brutha, and I really hope that you find some time to prop your feet up before the prerelease/battle road weekends hit.

See you at Nats!

David

KUDOS to Pam...she is one of my new best buddies- I would run computers with her anytime! We had to laugh together to get thru the day...if I hadn't been laughing, I would have been bawling my eyes out...anyway- hope she isn't sick today like I am because of the air conditioning ...
