Ripped off at Worlds, advice?

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone has any advice.

At Worlds this year, I was planning to share a room with a few people, so in advance of Worlds I paid $720 for part of the room, as did one other person. We arrived at Worlds on Tuesday, received a text message saying that the person we paid too wasn't arriving until Thursday and finding out that the room booking had been cancelled until Thursday.

Because of this, one of the people I was rooming with (who was going to be paying cash when he arrived) had to book a new room for us to stay in.

The person who took our money did show up on Thursday or Friday, but was evasive, and refused to pay us the money in full, instead just paying us small amounts, before disappearing back to England on Monday.

Currently I am still owed $350 and my friend is owed $500. I paid by cheque, and my friend made a bank deposit.

He has deleted his facebook account and is not replying to any messages that we send.

Is there any action we can take regarding this?

I don't really know what to say aside from "that sucks dude" and "a fool and his money are soon departed"

Even when it's someone I know and trust well, I would not intrust them with a large sum of cash. Why was it that you and your friend had to PAY HIM early when he's not even in the country?

Nitish... Not amused. Saw him running around open gaming wanting to buy exs legends primes etc for $1 ea...whenever i reminded him that he still owes you cash etc. I may also reminds you he screwed me on first day when i arrive and have to waithours for my back up to come in to let me crash for the night in their room. And this person also screwed tom hall back in 2008

I must give you advice, british or not - please do not do arrangements or trust this nitish doolub fella ever

If nitish wants to do sharing with, only person he can do to scum is jack snell

Good day :)

We paid him because he paid for the room upfront, he even showed us receipts, just between us paying and arriving at the hotel, he cancelled it to claim a refund.

I hate to hear anything like this happen in the community. I know that the event is an expensive proposition.

I don't really know what to say aside from "that sucks dude" and "a fool and his money are soon departed"

Was the malapropism intentional? ...the fool is parted...the con man departed

Can you call the cops and take this into legal matters? It's rightfully your money...

Idk if you wanna go that far to get it back, but that's a lot of money...

Taking this to a small claims court is your best bet. You have evidence of giving Nitish the money, messages which show what you paid him for, and witnesses who can confirm what you are saying.

It kind of sucks that you might have to do this to get your money back, but it's a lot to lose if you don't, and I'm not sure if you'll get it back otherwise.

You absolutely have a claim. Contact a solicitor and set up an appointment. A simple letter threatening legal action may cause him to refund the money.

Likewise, if he did this in '08 to Tom Hall....why in the world would you trust him now?? Once a con man....always a con man.

It makes me really sad to see things like this happen. Overall I believe the community is a great one, but I suppose every group has their bad apples...

He still hasn't paid you?! I already told you while were there small claims court UK style. First, go talk to your bank and see what they can do or suggest to you. That's where you should start first. Keep me up to date and whatnot via AIM, sir. Lawyer daddy and I will try and help as much as we can. :)

btw he didn't delete his facebook, just blocked you.

Friends and business should always be seperate. Get everything writing! Whenever money is involved I HAVE TO have something in writing.

Well I didn't hear about it happening to Tom until after I'd paid him.

I've been given the contact details of someone who knows his dad, and I've been told that going down that route has got it sorted in the past, so I will try that and if it fails, I'll go down the solicitor or small claims court route.

Thanks for the advice guys.

It sucks you've been stiffed and all, but why on Earth did you have to pay $720? Was this supposed to be some massive luxury suite?

Well he just told us that was the amount based on 4 people sharing.

Later we found out he'd also included parking (he doesn't have a car), internet (he didn't bring a laptop) and other stuff such as clean sheets everyday.

Yeah...Next time I'd be highly suspicious of the amount your roommate suggests. It only makes sense to be charged $400-500 tops, even at Hilton "ripoff" Bayfront.

There's a case here, Gigabyte, and I wish you the best of luck in recovering what's rightfully yours.

It's funny because I was supposed to be paying $500ish a night according to them (pfft as if) and when I get into the new room split between 4 people it was only $185.
