Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Team Draft! July 17th... BE THERE! (Brookfield, WI)

Hello all!

I just got back from a 10-day mission trip, so I apologize for the delay in responding.

I chose not to run Constructed TMP for several reasons:

1) The format was developed long ago, and even then it required quite a few card-specific rulings. Since then, a large number of cards have been released, and many of them raise HUGE rulings issues.

2) Rulings for newer cards would have to be made up on the spot. Players who had based their strategies on 'house rules' either here or in Chicago might be upset or angered when their own assumptions were not the same as those of the judge.

3) When prizes are on the line, I prefer to have as much clarity about the rules and specific card interactions AHEAD of time as possible. Above all, I want ALL players to feel that they have received fair treatment.

Players are welcome to improvise a Constructed TMP tournament. In fact, I am interested in playing in it. I prefer to wait, however, until all players are on the same page and in the same room.

So, for now, TMP Constructed is not officially planned, but may very well happen anyway!

As for the date, I am sure that everyone realizes that no date I picked would have been perfect for everyone. So, if you can't make it, I hope you can come next time!

Just for reference, I am planning to hold a prerelease on Sunday August 29th, subject to confirmation from PUI.

could the Chicago players plz IM or PM me about meeting time/place? This is something that I want to go to, but I'm not sure where everyone is meeting. Thx.

Yea, if that does happen, me and Jas will still win. XP

Yup... Constructed TMP would be extremely cool. I'm sure there are some rulings we could make up for that. It'd probably be pretty easy. If you WOULD need help with that, I'd be willing.

Excellent to see Chicago coming up in force!

By the way, I've located enough product that we should be able to eliminate the Neo and go with straight EXP/AQ/SK!

Would this happen on another date, or as a "side event" to the 2 main events if it happened?

Also, for the team, will we be using PUI's newly released rules or the old WotC rules? I for one really don't want to be totally owned by sleep...

As I said previously:

Play will be governed by WotC's rules for TMP Sealed tournaments. Copies of the rules will be available for players to use.

The WotC rules will only be used as they apply to playing TMP, specifically.

All other rules will be standard Nintendo rules (the ones we're all used to for all formats).

As for TMP constructed, that will happen if:

1) Players can agree on 'rulings' beforehand.

2) Players organize it.

3) Time permits.

If anyone at our league wants to help me with rulings on July 14th, that would be nice. I'm willing to forfeit my playing time to make rulings on newer cards as long as I can get some help. In other words, bring your binders (as a resource, and bring a will to help! ;)

About organizing it, what would you say, $5/player; $10/team? I would guess that is the case. Prizes would have to be decided on the day of the event probably, but I think that is perfectly fine with most of us.

Time is an issue, but thats always ok. We have to deal with it. I'm guessing there will be time, being that the first events are both Limited, and the tournament starts pretty early.

Anyone else willing to state their opinion?

So for a roll call, as of now we can expect...

cursedinfinity
HypnosProjectHQ, Jas, brother, and cousin
Shadowcune & Dad
PokeWisconsin
JasonthePwnda
TheDeuce
TuxedoBlack
Rulemaster & Kellen
bullados

Thats 14 for sure. We're bound to have a good turn out!

not "for sure", but at the very least "seriously considering". This all depends on whether or not I can get a ride from NW Chi area there.

Well, it sure is nice to see our league growing again! I'm amazed that we're getting several 'old school' players coming back in after 2-3 years playing other games. It will definitely help tourney attendance as well.

The store says they've had about a dozen phone calls asking about the tourney this week!

Unless somebody from the greater Chicago area can find some place to meet and drive, there is very little chance I can make it there. Sry.

Yea, but a lot of those are probably our league calling and confirming times.

So roll call right now looks like this (from what I'm aware):
cursedinfinity
HypnosProjectHQ, Jas, brother, cousin, and neighbor
Shadowcune & Dad
PokeWisconsin
JasonthePwnda
TheDeuce
TuxedoBlack
Rulemaster & Kellen
Joe M.
Erma Eunice Finklebunker
Broken Lizard's son

Possible attendees:
Bullados
Tormentedsoul

this'll be, what? 4-6 rounds each? Prizes determined based on attendance or something like that? I know it's a little late for these questions, but I need to know, like, NOW, in order to get my ride...

Well, I guess that this is my tourney report. ;)
Deck Name: Team ShInNySpOrK
Place: Hobbytown USA
Location: Brookfield, WI
Date: July 17th, 2004
Participants: 23

Ok... we got there around 10:00 AM. Not a long drive at all. It was only 45 minutes (like it is to league every night). I met up with Joe Miller, Niki Lasner, and my cousin Matt Teschsendorf not long after arriving.

Drafting Pods
Well, we got to choose what drafting pod we were in as long as we weren't with our partner. I swear though, I chose the wrong pod. I pulled nothing but crap and didn't get passed anything stupendiously great either. Maybe if I was at table #1.... nah!

This is what I ended up pulling:
Colorless
1 Clefairy
2 Eevee
1 Lickitung
1 Doduo
1 Pidgeotto

Fighting
1 Machop
1 Hitmontop

Fire
1 Houndour
1 Magby

Water
1 Staryu
1 Omastar
1 Octillery
1 Poliwag
2 Poliwhirl
1 Delibird
3 Goldeen
1 Seaking
1 Corsola
2 Totodile
1 Croconaw
1 Feraligatr

Dark
1 Umbreon

Grass
1 Pineco
1 Venonat
1 Paras
1 Koffing
1 Metapod

Psychic
2 Abra
1 Kadabra
2 Drowzee
1 Haunter
1 Misdreavus
1 Mr. Mime
1 Jynx

Trainers
2 Pokemon Fan Club
1 Pokemon Nurse
1 Masterball
1 Multi Technical Machine 01
1 Fisherman

Energy
1 Metal

Then I had to build my deck.
Pokemon (15)
2 Totodile
1 Croconaw
1 Feraligatr
2 Goldeen
1 Seaking
2 Voltorb
2 Electrode
1 Pikachu
1 Jynx
1 Misdreavus
1 Mr. Mime

Trainers (6)
2 Pokemon Fan Club
1 Masterball
1 Multi Technical Machine 01
1 Fisherman
1 Pokemon Nurse

Energy (19)
7 Lightning
6 Water
6 Psychic

After deck building, there was a 30 minute lunch break. It seemed so breif. Maybe that was because I was working on my deck most of the time... :p

Then rounds started up!

Round 1 vs. Richard Miller
This kid was brand spanking new to the game. Lets just say his deck was TOO multi-typed (never heard that expression in Limited before... lol) and I wholloped him. I took 3 prizes with Goldeen and 1 with Feraligatr. 1-0-0

Round 2 vs. Matt Teschendorf
Well, he offered me an ID from the start (being my cousin and all). I said lets play. So we started playing. All of the sudden, he gets this totally god set up and I'm quivering in fear. Then he re-offers me the ID and I take it with no questions asked. 1-0-1

Round 3 vs. Chris Miller
Even though Chris only has 3 points, I need this game to win the tourney. I get my "godly" Goldeen set up, and he gets nothing. Yup... Goldeen totally owns. 2-0-1

Round 4 vs. Jason Chen
Well, Jason is my arch-enemy. We are always battling it out and unfortunatly, I usually lose. Well, this game is like most of them, and I am totally owned. No questions asked. 2-1-1

Round 5 vs. Danny Costigan AKA Erma Eunice Finklebunker
Hmm... at this point I was scared. To even get any prizes, I needed the next to games in the bag. Well, this game had bad starts for both of us. Fortunatly, Goldenn and Mr. Mime come to the rescue. 3-1-1

Round 6 vs. Cody Krenke
So, its my brother in the last swiss round? Bring it on Cody! I laugh so hard once he's flipped his basics. He's playing pure fire, and I started with an Active Goldeen and a benched Totodile. By my 6th turn, I've already taken 3 prizes. This game lasted 8 turns purely on Weakness. It would have only been 7 if he hadn't used a Weakness Guard. Wow. One more turn.... lol. 4-1-1

Prizes for Single Draft
Prizes are announced for the Draft tourney.
1st Place - Kyle (Pooka)
2nd Place - Matt (MonsterProwler)
3rd Place - Me (HypnosProjectHQ)
4th Place - Matt (Rulemaster)

TMP Deck Building
After Prizes for the Draft were given out, played combined cards with their partners for a TMP tourney with the same card pool. My partner was Jas Jolitz, my best friend. Of course, best friends come up with the weirdest things. We decided to call ourselves Team ShInNySpOrK. Unfortuantly, no mascots were available to us...

My TMP Deck
Pokemon (19)
3 Totodile
1 Croconaw
1 Feraligatr
3 Abra
1 Kadabra
3 Goldeen
1 Seaking
2 Cleffa
1 Jynx
2 Mr. Mime
1 Misdreavus

Trainers (4)
2 Pokemon Fan Club
1 Multi Technical Machine 01
1 Masterball

Energy (17)
9 Psychic
8 Water

Jas's TMP Deck
Pokemon (16)
2 Voltorb
2 Electrode
3 Tangela
3 Hoppip
2 Grimer
1 Slowpoke
1 Doduo
1 Lickitung
1 Pikachu

Trainers (7)
1 Underground Expedition
1 Full Heal
1 Seer
1 Pokemon Nurse
1 Copycat
1 Fisherman
1 Super Scoop Up

Energy (17)
9 Grass
8 Lightning

After a breif intermission do to computer problems, round 1 started.

Round 1 vs. Matt/Cody
I found it rather ironic that I played against my cousin and brother in the first round. Well, we skunked them completely. Between Grimer and Feraligatr, they didn't stand a chance. 1-0

Round 2 vs. Jason/Kyle
So now we meet against Team 2nd. I wonder why they call themselves that... stupid 2nd placers at Nationals. Well Jason, even that didn't help you get ahead of me in standings in the first tourney. Unfortuantly, I missed a coin flip that cost us the game. I need 1 of 2 flips. Of course, double tails. Geez! A loss so early!?! 1-1

Round 3 vs. Danny/Brent
Brent just started playing again, and Danny is... well... a total geek. So, we go into the game thinking we'll probably own them. Unfortunatly, their quick damage and status conditions get to us and we quickly give up hope and make ourselves lose quicker. 1-2

Round 4 vs. Joe/Peter
What can I say? Probably this: "YAY! 10 YEAR OLDS! WE CAN FINALLY WIN A GAME!" 2-2

Round 5 vs. Ryan/Adam
Bullados's team, I see. Well, they are 4-0 going in, and are undeafeated yet going out. This gaeme was lost because of another lousy coin flip. Again, I needed 1 of 2 and got diddly crap. 2-3

Prizes for TMP
Prize breakdown looks like this...
1st Place: Ryan/Adam
2nd Place: Jason/Kyle (Still Team 2nd, I see... :p)
3rd Place: Matt/Kellen
4th Place: Brent/Danny
5th Place: Niki/Jim
6th Place: Richard/Brad
7th Place: Me/Jas
8th Place: Cody/Matt
And so on...

Props
-Jared for hosting and judging. Nice tourney. Nice format. Nice turnout.
-Kellen and Brent for getting back to the game.
-Jason for me owning him in the first tourney. Let it be known. :p
-Kyle for keeping up the record of 2nd. Nice one.
-Ryan for not going COMPLETELY psycho after I flipped double tails.
-The prizes. Nice boxtoppers, packs, and Torchic promos! YAY!
-Jas for being a great friend and great partner.

Slops
-Jason for beating me in both tournaments.
-Cody and Matt for no shutting up the entire time.
-Not having Asprin.
-Pulling crap from my packs... as usual.
-Bombing in TMP. Oh well. At least that one wasn't sanctioned.
-Not getting any trades. Then again, who would trade good stuff to a good player? NO ONE!
-Dark Blastoise Boxtopper for looking too tempting.
-To whoever took the boxtopper Scizor.
-Computers for being such a pain.

Well, congradulations everyone!
~Hyp~ ;)
