Yeah, pick it up with A, but only when it is gray/black. You have a window of about 3-5 seconds, probably.
Tommy Tallarico said:[Posted by someone else in the thread]There's the hardware audio channel deal that I mentioned which has to be some sort of disadvantage (hey, you said "not one") and having dedicated memory and memory bandwidth that the graphics engine generally won't hog up...[/post]
I'm not sure where you are getting your information from... But as I said earlier it's quite senseless to try and debate this stuff with me.
This is NOT my opinion like the t.v. show reviews. These are things I know as FACT and I am NOT wrong! Sorry to sound so harsh but it seems like there are people around here who need to be told things 1000 times (and it still doesn't sink in).
So once again let me state that.... The PS2 KICKS THE GAMECUBES [butt] IN EVERY ASPECT WHEN IT COMES TO AUDIO. THERE IS NOT ONE SINGLE LITTLE TINY ADVANTAGE THAT THE GAMECUBE HAS OVER THE PS2 IN THE AUDIO DEPARTMENT. NOT ONE!
I'm not sure why you seem to think there is one? I guess maybe its hard to swallow?? Why?? Facts are facts??
You mention something about hardware audio channels??? I guess what you don't realize is that the PS2 HAS a dedicated sound processing unit (SPU) capable of handling 8 megs (3.6 to 1 compression) and multiple stream layering. How many dedicated audio chips does the Gamecube have??? Hmm... let me see... lets count them.... uh... er... ah... oh yeah! THEY DON'T HAVE ANY!!!
They make audio share the Main CPU memory. WHOOPS!!! So much for ever getting any kind of multiple streaming without shutting down the main CPU (programmers just LOVE doing that).
I think you got yer systems mixed up there?? You said the PS2 didn't have "dedicated memory and memory bandwidth that the graphics engine generally won't hog up."
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Wrong! Thanks for playing!
Can you please stop debating this issue now DoomPlague?? We both know [darn] well the GameCube has nowhere NEAR the audio capability of the PS2... so why even bother debating the issue??
Now I got to get back to work. The 5 PS2 games and 3 X-Box games I'm working on for E3 need some attention. Unfortunately the only 2 Gamecube "conversions" I was working on got CANCELLED last month due to the lack of sales and interest for the system.
I do LOVE Nintendo... but facts are facts! Don't shoot the messenger!

Tommy T. said:As stated earlier... The GameCube is NOT even close to being in the same league as the PS2, X-Box & PC. It gets its [butt] kicked in EVERY aspect... not 90% as some people seem to belive... but EVERY aspect. Just because a car has more cylinders DOESN'T mean it its faster, better, more efficient, etc...
This is the point I've been TRYING to drive home this entire thread. I hope people's system biases aren't coming into play here. Facts are Facts and the Nintendo audio system can't compete with the other systems... Never has... and never will... the hardware AND software support is holding it back.
Maybe next system Nintendo will take audio more seriously... they certainly didn't this round.

And other thing FOR THE LAST FREAKIN' TIME!!!!!!!!!!! I have NOTHING AGAINST the GameCube!!! Did any of you take the time to read Vic's post on this subject??? I AM NOT BIASED!! GET OVER IT!!!! Just because I give a low score to a game that means I'm biased?? Just because I give a low score to a game that someone else likes and I don't that means I'm biased??
Are you people INSANE?!?!?! I've given a lot worse scores to PS2 games than GameCube games!!! How come no one ever mentions that?? Does that mean I'm biased to the PS2?!?! NO!! I find that Nintendo fanboys get so worked up if a Nintendo game gets a low score... Um... er, a.... WHOSE THE ONE BEING BIASED?!?!?!! The most biased people in the entire world are NINTENDO FANBOYS!! And they are the ones calling me biased!?!?! Hilarious!!! I DO NOT give all GameCube games a low score!! I don't give a flying fart which system a game is on or not on!! I judge a game based on THE GAME!!! NOT THE SYSTEM!!!! duh!
Enough rambling I'm going to go outside and play now... You should think about doing the same. I'm not here to make enemies and would rather have people like FooFlex and BlowHum as someone who disagreed with my reviews but at least respected me for telling it like it is. Hope you can get by this and start enjoying the show for what it is... Entertainment!!!
It's not the end of the world!
Thanks for listening,

Tommy doesn't hate the GameCube. Actually I know for a fact that he thinks it's a pretty neat system. He actually brought one to our Electric Playground offices that he personally bought at a Japanese import shop prior to the North American launch and he was impressed by the machine, the controller (although he likes the PS2 controller better), the tiny memory cards and the mini-discs. He has never agreed with Nintendo's decision not to allow gamers to play their DVD movies on the system but I was with him when he was unpacking all of the stuff out of the box and he had a "kid at Christmas" look on his face. So did I. The GameCube is cool. It has tons of power, it's easy to develop for and the thing just feels solid. That WaveBird kicks butt BTW--we'll be shooting the review for that product on the show next week. Tommy thinks the GameCube is cool and I think I even like it more than he does.
The thing that both Tommy and I agree on, however, is that there hasn't been enough high quality, original software for the system since it came out. We've reviewed a lot of GC games on EP and now JD and there are some good games but not enough of them. I don't think this is news to anyone. He wasn't impressed by Nintendo's E3 showing. Fine. I was pretty [dang] impressed but I'm a diehard, hyper fan of Mario, Zelda and Metroid and all three franchises had new games on display. That was awesome for me. We didn't see a whole bunch of killer 3rd party software at Nintendo's booth, however, and that was what was so discouraging to Tommy, because he's simply not as big a fan of Mario, Zelda and Metroid as I am.
Tommy isn't biased against game companies, he has specific tastes in games and he's very good at defining and expressing his tastes. My taste in games is pretty broad. I have spent more than half of my life soaking up videogames and I appreciate games on tons of different levels. I think I like different games than Tommy and I probably like more games than Tommy. Does that make me a better or worse game reviewer than Tommy? Who the [heck] knows? I think why Tommy and I have managed to gel as reviewers together is that we have a respect for each other's perspective, while at the same time we both have strong individual opinions that we can feel safe enough to express. I don't give a [darn] if I like a game more than Tommy and I know he could care less if he hates a game I love. We don't middleground anything. What does that serve? The toughest part of what we do is actually reviewing games that are mediocre. It's hard to have a passionate opinion about something one way or the other when the thing can be described as, "well, it's okay..."
It makes us happy to see the passion on these boards. We love that you are all picking sides and agreeing with opinions or agreeing to disagree about opinions or even generally being disagreeable about everything we're doing. At least we have you talking and discussing and sharing your thoughts about videogames. That's why we started doing this, guys. We love videogames and we know that there are millions of you around the world that share our passion, if not our opinions.
It doesn't matter what Tommy or I have to say about Tommy's biases or my overly high scores, you guys are forming your own opinions about us and our work and, well, we want you to know that we think that's cool. Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to participate in the discussion.
Cheers,
