Ok, so my dad is thhinking about taking me to the grinders, so does anybody know how many people in each division will qualify?

The website says 4 in each division but that may change at Worlds depending on who shows for their spots. Just have to go and see.

2009:
JR - 125 players, 7 rounds, 31 invites
SR - 160 players, 8 rounds, 29 invites
MA - 457 players, 2 flights, 8 rounds, 24 invites
Total players: 742

2008:
Jr: 117 players, 7 rounds, 25 invites
Sr: 157 players, 8 rounds, 22 invites
MA: 374 players, 8 rounds, 2 flights, 12 invites
Total players: 648

2007:
Jr: 54 Players, 6 Rounds, 13 invites
Sr: 64 Players, 6 Rounds, 7 invites
Ma: 141 Players, 8 Rounds, 6 invites
Total players: 259

2006:
10 & Under: 95 players, 7 rounds
11-14: 124 players, 7 rounds
15 & Up: 293 players, 9 rounds
Total players: 512

Oh, ok. My dad looked on the website that said top 4 and decided no way, but if I can get him to look at these numbers....

Luigi: There is more than just the number it depends on what division your in, Juniors your practically handed an invite I think they took over half last year. Seniors and Masters are a different story, both are very cut throat divisions with very little chance of getting in, I would not go to Worlds based on the thoughts your going to grind in but rather to have fun with friends. It should also be noted that 07 was the last time it was in Hawaii, and few invites were given out, also the smallest Worlds though.

Don't you also get an invite if you are a player in the US and are in the top 40 in North America in your age division? It's not a paid invite but an invite and you won't need to go through grinder. I thought also that the final number of slots in grinder for each age division depends on who shows up that received the paid invite (top 8 in nationals or 1st/2nd in last year's Worlds) or invite (top 40). It definitely looks like rankings have been updated already from Worlds. I'm new to Pokemon, so I don't know 100%. Thanks!

I disagree, Juniors are not practically handed an invite. There are more than Seniors and Masters but that is most likely due to fewer actually coming that earned invites due to whatever reason. Looking at the numbers posted above, only about 1/4 of the Juniors that play get invites through the LCQ. It probably is most realistic to look at the numbers for 07 when it was held in Hawaii but much of the invite structure changed this year and the only guarantee at the moment is top 4 of each division.

Yes, the top 40 in North America will receive unpaid invites. But I think the Canadian Nationals is still over a week away so the current standings are not final.

Thanks! How much change do you think there can be right now with the No. America rankings? Using the Junior division as an example, I just looked and there are 3 Canadian players currently in the top 40. After that the next closest player is ranked at #66.

However, if you're looking at 2007 as a basis keep in mind that people with rating invites that year were given a paid trip to worlds, while this year they are just given an invite. I still expect that there will be a lot of people that will go to the Grinder and there will be a decent amount of invites, but it is very cut throat (last year I grinded in but I went 7-0 and then lost my last game if you lose more than 1 game your shots of getting in are very very small).

Actually in 2007 in Hawaii there ended up being 7 masters that grinded in. a senior player from Asia region registered as a Masters player by mistake. They did not discover the mistake until the day of worlds. So they contacted the 7th place masters player and told her that she could play and Seniors played with one more player then was intedended. I know this because I was there and went 6-2 and finished 12th. So close yet so far.

They announced 5 on the day of LCQ, and the next in line was Liz R which she was 6th after swiss. Yeah, Jeff - I know that player personally, got a tardiness bye for his stupidity

This will sound dumb. but as I'm fairly new to Pokemon competetive play, what is the grinder?

Were you the guy with Infernape?

It's the tourniment the day before worlds where they give out the remaining worlds invites to the top players.

Oh, thanks. So basically, even people who don't get invites to Worlds can fly there and try to play in the REAL Worlds?
