So, after deciding to sit out Regionals, Battle Roads, and Nationals, I end up get my rating invite by being 21st. I haven’t really played at all. I judged Regionals, NJ VGC, and VGC Nationals along with 2 Battle Roads and Volunteered at Nats. I focused nearly 2 ½ months to the Professor Cup and trying to T4. I manage to get 3rd, but I definitely saw my rustiness after making a lot of mistakes. After seeing what did well at Nats, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to play. I made a list of about 30 deck options. I slowly whittled the list down to about 10 choices. I knew that I didn’t want to play any SP Variant, SableLock, or GG, so that limited my choices. I also needed to get lists for some of the decks that I wanted to test against and possibly play as I am not a great deck builder. I can tweak lists well, but when it comes to deck building I need some serious help. I tried GeChamp but I just couldn’t beat SP consistently and the fact that it lost to almost everything that wasn’t SP and GG, made me scrap it pretty fast.
A few days later, I got a response to a message I sent to Craig Abley about his Garchomp deck that he played at Nats. I was very intrigued by it and wanted the list and wanted to consider it. So, after he generously gave me his list, I built it and tested it at league. I went like 13-2 and knew immediately that I was going to play Garchomp for Worlds. It was just a matter of getting the list correct. I started thinking about what I could do to make the list better overall (not that Craig’s list was bad, it was AMAZING), I just felt for Worlds and my play style, I wanted to do things a bit different.
I ended up getting invited down to Florida by some friends and ended up testing and working with them and then Orion Craig. We started testing, him with Jumpluff and me with the Garchomp. It seemed to be going 50/50 against it and other decks mostly because I was unsure on matchups. I started to make changes and eventually dropped Palkia Lv. X from the list and added Poketurn, 1 Crobat, Azelf, and 1-1 Luxray Lv. X. I also dropped something else for a 2nd Uxie and I felt the deck needed it. The list was much better as against decks that Luxray wasn’t needed for Crobat was AMAZING. I kept working on it, but still felt the list was off, not sure why. I did some testing with Eric Craig, but still felt that I needed something else, but wasn’t sure what it was.
I then saw that Gino posted about Garchomp SV being the best deck in the format. I felt that it was, and since he offered to help earlier I messaged him and we discussed my list and his. While he never gave me his list, he suggested Dusknoir (something I already wanted but couldn’t fit in the list), and the Jumpluff Engine. He also said Machamp. So I tried it out, and really didn’t like it. I had it built like that until I left for Worlds, in which while I was happy with Garchomp, I didn’t quite like the Machamp or my list.
I arrived in Hawaii, and started testing with Jay Hornung and James (his friend), who were staying in the room. I couldn’t deal with the Machamp version anymore. I liked the Jumpluff engine however, so I stuck with it. It somehow gave me two extra spots which were pretty good. I immediately added an Unown Q as I knew I needed one. I also changed the energy around. I dropped two and used the extra spot to add 3 Call in which Jay suggested. However, I still felt the list was JUST off. So, Jay suggests I talk to Ben Sauk.
I head to the lobby on what must be Wednesday night and talk to Ben. At this point, I was about 5 cards short from where I wanted to be. I wanted a 4th Call, 4th Garchomp, 1-0-1 Dusknoir, and a 4th Candy if I did that. We able to find the room for 4 of the 5 cards. We dropped a 1-1 Claydol line to add Noir, and then I went back to the original number of energy which was 11 by dropping both Cyclone for the Candy and Call. I really liked the Cyclone and it hurt me to drop it, but I think I needed to do so. I might have won my T32 game had I kept it in, but I am not sure how my other games would have gone then.
Ben and I test the changes after play a few games with the old list and losing pretty bad to SP. He however couldn’t beat me with GG consistently. I was going about 85% against it. After the changes I start winning many more games than I previously had been. I ended up testing against a few people including my friend Daniel from Germany who was testing Kingdra. I went like 8-0 against him in testing with Garchomp. I also tested against Orion who just couldn’t get his Jumpluff list to beat my improved Garchomp. I was beating GG consistently now and had an 55/45 matchup against LuxChomp as long as I got a decent start. I decided to take a break and watch the Grinder. I was watching Yamato and Frank Diaz match and when I say Yamato play Aibipom G, I realized I needed it in my list. I just felt it would drastically help me. After talking to a few people and realizing I never needed it I dropped the Azelf LA for it. I did some more testing Friday night with Orion going about 8-1 beating his Pluff, but going 2-1 vs. LuxChomp. So, I was ready for Worlds, with Garchomp even though it pretty much has an auto loss to DialgaChomp, but I will take the one bad matchup. I go to sleep for Worlds. I get up the next morning, re-sleeve my deck, write out my deck list and head down to the play area.
Here is my FINAL list –
Pokemon – (22)
4x Gible SV
2x Gabite SV
3x Garchomp SV
2x Baltoy
2x Claydol
2x Uxie
1x Duskull
1x Dusknoir
1x Crobat G
1x Luxray GL
1x Luxray GL Lv. X
1x Unown Q
1x Ambipom G
Trainers – (27)
4x Rare Candy
4x Pokemon Communication
4x TGI Poke Turn
3x Judge
3x Pokemon Collector
3x Broken Time-Space
2x Bebe’s Search
2x Expert Belt
1x Luxury Ball
1x Night Maintenance
Energy – (11)
4x Call Energy
4x Double Colorless Energy
3x Warp Energy
I only played 8 supporters, I never needed more, and the list to me was perfect. I had no complaints with it.
Now to the tournament –
R1 – Daniel Cohen - (Kingdra)
So, I see that for the 2nd time in Hawaii I play Daniel R1. Last time he played the only deck I couldn’t beat. We were fairly certain I was going to win, but we get setup and he ends up going 2nd. Had I gone 2nd, I would have won as I had Duskull and 2 Turn with Bat in my deck as he started with Duskull. Let’s just say this game went WAY different as he got an insane start. He got 2 Claydol up T1 with a Kingdra Prime and Warp Pointed to KO my DCE’d Gible. By T3 he had 3 Kingdra Prime. I couldn’t do anything, and the fact that both my Claydol were prized (Ugh Azelf), didn’t help. He beat me pretty badly. He ended up going 1-4 and then dropping.
Loss (0-1)
I was considerable bummed. But knew a 5-1 record would get in, but then it was said it would only be a T16 cut and that meant that I would have to win out to get in.
R2 – Mexican Player (ended up 32nd seed) – LuxChomp.
I started with a LONE Q. I luckily go 2nd and I have a great open hand where I just explode (it happened a bunch of times), but when I search my deck with Collector after he can’t KO my Q, I find that BOTH my Uxie are prized. I have a Claydol in my hand. So, I say fine, I’ll get 2 Baltoy but, I can only find 1. 2 Uxie and 1 Baltoy are prized. I get 2 Gible and 1 Baltoy. He T2’s the Baltoy and just continues to run thru me due to my prizes. Later in the game I go an collector to get a few more Gible, but yeah, 2 are prized… I wasn’t you have got to be kidding me. I had to KO his Garchomp Lv. X with Duskull by placing 3 damage on it. I proceeded to lose pretty badly. He draw was pretty bad and had I gone off I would have won.
Loss (0-2)
So, now I am 0-2, with no chance of making cut, having my prizes completely hating me, and my deck decided to get the worst starting hands/prizes I have seen in a while. It was really quite amazing. I was starting to regret not playing Azelf. However, I felt that if I could go 5-0, I would still win the DS so that was my goal. I knew that my deck couldn’t keep playing this badly after testing it a lot. We were now on a 2 hour (yes 2 hour) lunch break. I also think that every Master player bugged Dave Schwimmer to have a T32, because we had the most players and a lot of 5-2’s would miss the cut.
I am pretty bummed, but grab a small sandwhich for free from some friends. They had those wraps from Costco which are freakin’ amazing.
R3 - ????? – (Kingdra)
So, I have to win out to win a DS, and that’s exactly what I plan to do. I start with Crobat and Ambipom. I play down my Ambipom active as I have the energy in my hand and keep the Bat in my hand. He manages to mulligan 4 times (I had the DCE before the mulligans but my hand was pretty bad). He plays down one Pokemon. We roll and I am going first. I ask him is that his only Pokemon. He says yes. I ask him does it have less that 70hp, he is like yes. I like I have the donk. I show him my active, and the DCE and he concedes before the round had started. We sign the match slip, and then go thru the motions of me drawing and attaching the DCE to win.
Win (1-2)
Dave also announced it would be a T32 for Masters which meant I still had a shot to win Worlds, which for me was awesome.
R4 – Japanese Player - (LuxChomp)
I get an okay, start, but he gets a T2 Garchomp or 3 Garchomp with DCE and one shots one of my pokemon (I think Claydol). However, using my 2 Uxie I am drawing fine. He can’t find a supporter to save his life. I end up grabbing a few prizes before he finally finds an Uxie via Roseannes to try to get back into the game. However I was waiting for that and I Judge him right away, which cripples his hand once again. After that it was smooth sailing as my Garchomp kept OHKOing things.
Win (2-2)
R5 - ????? – (LuxChomp)
I was playing against some person from Italy. I don’t remember much about this match other than I got a Judge off which crippled his hand and he drew dead long enough for me to get setup and gain the advantage.
Win (3-2)
R6 – ????? - (Blaziken/SableLock)
Nobody really believes me when I tell them that out of all the decks in the format, SableLock is the easiest for Garchomp to beat. I testing it multiple times and just always was able to setup. So anyways, he starts with Sableye and Blaziken to my Ambipom and I think Gible. He decides to Collector with impersonate. I proceed to just go completely off save for getting a Garchomp up. I attach DCE + Belt to Ambipom, I get up Claydol, and then I just his hand away while KOing Uxie. This crippled him enough where he brings up my Claydol. I can’t find a Candy or Gabite to save my life. He KO’s my Claydol with Blaziken, and I proceed to get up the Garchomp finally. I take the next few prizes before he decides after not seeing a supporter, to use Sableye to Judge. I draw crap, but I draw a Judge myself and use it. I draw into an Uxie which I had Psychic Restored earlier. He draws into crap once again, and I proceed to run thru him.
Win (4-2)
So, at this point, I have made a remarkable comeback from 0-2 to 4-2. I am hoping that I can get one more win and secure my place in T32 and get the DSi XL after it was looking bleak. I really didn’t want to do all that hard and then end up losing in the last round to fall short.
R7 – Tom Hall – (LuxChomp)
Tom’s from the UK and is one of the cooler people I know. He is always fun to hang around and can be quite funny at times. I felt really bad about having to play him in R7. He didn’t play Lucario GL, which mean my matchup went from about 60/40 to about 85/15 if not better. We both get setup, and I get up a belted Chomp. He needs to use two Chomp to kill my active Chomp. The fact that I was able to KO 3 Garchomp early including the Lv. X really hurt. He manages to get them back, but the fact that he never saw a spray the whole game and the fact that I used Dusknoir (only game I got it up all tournament) to prevent him from bright looking one of my Pokemon late game severly hurt. I ended up winning, because of the no Lucario thing. Tom was super lucky and managed to get in via resistance despite being 4-3 as did my second round opponent because I went 5-2.
Win (5-2)
At this point I am ecstatic to have made cut after my awful start. I find I am playing against GG a matchup in which I have a significant advantage. However, I go in with the mindset that I am not going to screw up getting T16 (my goal for the ENTIRE year) for the 3rd time\
T32 - #7 seed Curtis Lyons (6-1) – (GG/Queen)
G1 – I get an amazing start. I manage to go off and use Sand Tomb on his active Spiritomb for a few turns. I get it up to 50 and was going to Crobat next turn, but he manages to Judge it away to prevent me from taking two prizes in one turn. This definitely helped him out. I proceed to start taking prizes. I manage to get down to 1-5 on prizes but both my belted Chomp have damage on them and I proceeded to whiff on Dusknoir (I needed one of like a bunch of cards in my deck to cripple him). I have the game next turn, but he uses DOUBLE HEALER on his active. He then is able to make a comeback as he uses DOUBLE HEALER a second time. I did mess up on my math on his Gardevoir Lv. X but I am confident that with Queen out and whatnot he would have retreated for one turn to prevent me from KOing it. I was quite upset to be up 1-5 on prizes taken and lose.
G2 – I got no supporters for the longest time and by the time I did I was drawing pretty dead as I couldn’t use any powers due to how fast my opponent got setup.
Loss (5-3)
I was disappointed that I didn’t do better, but happy as I got a chance to play T32 and that I was able to recover from 0-2 to go 5-2 and make cut and win a DSi XL. My goal was to T16 but for the 3rd time I managed to whiff on getting there. This was by FAR my best season as far as record is concerned and I hope that I continue the trend of improving so that eventually I break thru in Nationals or Worlds in Top Cut. I keep losing out on Scholarship and keep managing to not be able to win in Top Cut at Nationals or Worlds. I am a combined 1-6 in them in Top Cut (as far as advancing) and the 1 time I advanced was because my opponent gave me a prize penalty. Otherwise I most likely would be 0-6, instead.
I appreciate everyone who helped me work on this deck and gave me ideas on it. I know I am going to forget someone, and I really am only going to thank those players who gave SIGNIFICANT help, not everyone.
Props –
Craig Abley
Orion Craig
Jay Hornung
Ben Sauk

Those seven helped me the most with fixing my list and making it much better overall. I appreciate there help and wouldn’t have gotten 28th place without them.
Thanks for taking the time to read my report.
