Ultra pro sleeves banned rumor discussion

This is not official, but a rumor hence the gossip section. no sleeves with holograms or other marks on the front are legal, because apparently they can obscure card information.

I'm very skeptical about this, considering TPCi required Ultra Pro sleeves to be used on their Worlds stream.

There is no such rule. I'm going to leave it open just to learn if anyone is incorrectly enforcing this.
But THERE IS NOT SUCH RULE.

Just to clarify, there IS such a rule that 'The front of the sleeves are clear, clean, and free of designs, holograms, and emblems that may obscure card information' (Section 2 of the TCG Tournament Rules and Formats.) What there isn't is a rule banning a brand. You may have a judge or organizer over-zealously interpreting the above, but the logo on Ultra Pros doesn't obscure anything.

Oh, that would explain what is being misinterpreted!
That is there to disallow those sleeves that have a whole holo pattern across the entire face of the sleeves, not just the tiny little holo logo.

The rules are pretty clear that the hologram, etc. needs to be obscuring card info to be forbidden... I don't think any Ultra Pro sleeve does that for Pokemon in the slightest. The only way Ultra Pros could even remotely do that is if you put the card in them upside down (so the gap is at the bottom of the card rather than the top), where it blocks like 1 letter of the card name. Otherwise, it blocks part of the illustrator credit on I believe every single card type, which has zero gameplay effect.

Kinda lame that this even progressed to a rumour... It's pretty blatantly false.

At one point, it did block the Retreat information. But that was a very, very long time ago...

As the dude that wrote this rule, I can confirm that this is correct. There used to be sleeves (maybe there still are) where the entire face of the sleeve had a holographic pattern. In the right (wrong?) light, this pattern could make the text on an opponent's card darn near illegible. The small foil UltraPro logo that appears in the bottom corner of their sleeves is only an issue if it covers game information.

This is a great example. The foil UltraPro logo used to be located in such a way that it would cover a portion of the Retreat cost on a Pokemon card with a Retreat of 3 or more. Those sleeves would be illegal under this rule. However, the logo is now placed in a location that does not obscure game information, so it's no longer an issue.

...until there is a card that asks the opponent who drew the art for your active pokemon lol.

That would be as silly as a card that asks your opponent how tall a Pokemon is. Wait a minute...

And next thing you notice, is that there is a card that makes your opponent pick a side: up, down, left, or right, and he has to guess the thickness of the yellow border from that side hahaha.

And then after that, there might be a card that tells you to rip up the card, and you have to throw the pieces from 5 feet away towards the playing surface. Whatever pokemon the pieces touch, it automatically goes to the discard pile, along with the energy hahahahahaha.

Slightly off topic, but I wish sleeve art were up to the discretion of judges. UP makes 2-3 sleeves per calendar year, and they're all aimed at kids. I think that if judges want to allow Unicorn sleeves, they should be able to.

Just putting in my two cents.

I have plenty of anime sleeves that I would love to use in pokemon. But I'm basically limited to non-sanctioned events, so they go to my unlimited decks and local random format tournaments.
