Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

What's wrong with you Pokegym members?

I am just going to say this. I am not apologetic for anything that I said in the previous thread, but I hold no ill will nor grudge against anyone involved now or then regardless of what they may think of me. Additionally, I do not feel I was being insulting to anyone other than perhaps vaporeon and the guy who insulted Tennessee (I did accuse him of being illiterate; not for insulting Tennessee, but for thinking I was from Tennessee).

Why is it that you always have to call me out. I think you only do this because you ether think your better then everyone else or you like being a internet tough guy. I'll have you know IP address are not hard to get when posting on fourms.

I probably shouldn’t say all this, but I am getting tired of the gym and I find that sad.

The gym has many problems.

The Players

I used to just think that the Gym was rough and tumble owing mainly to the fact that most people posting here were fairly young. I expect a certain amount of angst and whatnot from folks in the age range that seems to make up most of the player base that posts here. But what I’m seeing more and more frequently goes beyond this.

1. Whining. Good gravy, enough is enough. It seems rather unlikely that POP is going to increase player support in the middle of a recession. No Nats isn’t going to be in your home city just because you want it to be. I could go on, but my point is that when we have 3+ threads on why player rewards suck it’s just too much. I’m sure that POP listens to interesting & well reasoned arguments when folks state their case ... but I’m equally sure that they must tune out stuff after 5000000000 emotional posts.

2. Tactlessness. Didn’t your mom ever teach you that HOW you say something is just as important as the point you are trying to make? Apparently not for way too many people here. It’s fine to think that someone’s deck idea or art or fake card or whatever isn’t all that great ... but it’s really not that hard to communicate this to them in ways that aren’t going to set them off or get their emotions involved. And it’s not going to hurt anyone if you just keep your opinion to yourself and just don’t say anything. Bad posts will die a lot faster if no one actually responds to them.

3. Trolling. Apparently some people thing that it’s funny to post things that derail threads, make people angry, or that just mess things up. I’ve seen tons of comments, including some in this very thread where people basically say that they don’t take the Gym seriously. That attitude is fine by itself. It’s when folks take action on it that it becomes a problem. Lots of people are very serious about all kinds of things. Just because you think it’s a joke doesn’t mean that others will.

4. Judge bashing. These folks are volunteers. They don’t have to take the time and effort to give you events, door prizes, and more. There would be no OP without these folks. Sure they are human and make mistakes, but there are channels for dealing with that. No one expects any player to take bad judging lying down, but these adults do deserve a certain amount of slack for all their efforts. When there are problems don’t bring them here unless it actually helps the situation instead of making it worse. Taking the high road will get you far more respect from both the judges and your fellow players that matter in the long run.

The Judges / Staff

I was always amazed by the amount of Professors, Judges, TOs, and more that post here. I love seeing the insight on rulings and all the nuts and bolts of the game that get exposed in “ask the rule team.” That said there are problems from this end too.

1. Defensiveness. Yes I know that some players bash and bash and bash. I know that sometimes people you know & respect are taking a beating from them ... or that sometimes you yourself are the target. But I see a CONSTANT stream of AUTOMATIC defense of EVERYTHING here. It’s hurting both the Gym and your credibility when you do this. Ironically I think that this high active level of defense actually encourages more bashing. Pick your battles, don’t try to fight them all.

2 Guesswork. Somewhat related the players see judges defending PUI and POP policy and such but making contradictory, unsupported, or ill informed arguments about things. Of course they are going to bash even harder the moment they sense this. If you don’t know for sure why POP is doing something then you shouldn’t defend it in an authoritative manner.

3. Lack of a player focused approach. I remember very strongly reports of issues at a major event last year. Several players and family members had stories of incidents by staff that sure didn’t sound good. I kept waiting for someone to say something like, “Wow. That sounds really bad. I’m sorry to hear a report like that. I’ll look into this.” That is the automatic customer service centered response. Instead there were the “Oh, that couldn’t have happened.” Denials & defenses which of course only make folks angrier and make players think that the judges care more about their judge friends than they do for the game or the people who play it.

PUI / POP

While the gym isn’t an official forum it’s the closest thing that there is to one that’s open to both players and staff. The gym is HUGE and represents one of the single largest gatherings of people in the game. But since it isn’t an official arm of the POP the gym’s credibility seems to come into question from time to time and there are other issues.

1. Lack of openness and communication. This comes in lots of forms. Why was Nats in St. Louis this year? We still don’t have an official explanation. Why is prize support changing. Even if you don’t feel strongly about this one, the changes are clear to people who have been in the game a long time. Without any sort of official statements about things like these the gym tends to end up with endless blathering and debate.

2. Lack of openness and communication II. By not posting decklists and such POP has created an environment where people HAVE to keep secrets to gain competitive advantage. This culture of secrecy filters over into the gym with various destructive consequences. And our young players are sent the very clear message that even POP does things in secret, witness the internal debates that lead to our first Japanese card ruling. If it’s OK for POP staff to keep BIG secrets then it must be fine for 14 year old Timmy and his buds too. I’m not against secrets in general, but the community seems to take things way too far for my taste in general & IMHO it comes from the very top.

There’s more, but I’m getting way tired. I do wish that things were better here on the gym ... but everyone needs to be aware that the gym is a COMMUNITY. It will not get better unless each individual member makes an effort for it to do so.

I am a nice person on the Gym and out of the Gym. I have been very fortunete to meet nice, good people from the Gym in real life. If you flame me on here though, I will flame you back. I am not afraid of any one and I will speak my mind. If any crazy Gym member wants to try me in real life, they better be ready to bring it because I will beat the stuff out of them. With that said. Please be nice to people on here. If you do, they will be nice to you also.

I don't think saying "I'm going to beat the stuff out of them" proves any point nor makes you sound hard.

Why is it that you always have to call me out. I think you only do this because you ether think your better then everyone else or you like being a internet tough guy. I'll have you know IP address are not hard to get when posting on fourms.
I didn't call you out. I only admitted that I was insulting toward you. I obviously couldn't make a blanket statement that I didn't insult anyone in that thread because that simply wasn't true. If you have any more issues with me, feel free to take them up with me privately as this is not the place for it.

Also, an internet tough guy is someone who threatens to beat people up that they don't know IRL behind the safety of the internet. I haven't done that.

The irony of people POSTING ON AN INTERNET FORUM to say 'I'm not an internet tough guy, I would beat you IRL', is hilarious.

LOL! Come on, guys. My thread wasn't that epic.

Anyways... I don't know. It's not that strange. This is the internet, after all. There will be trolls, there will be idiots, there will be flamers. It's like what secretsof2113 said, no one cares are long as there's a computer screen between them.

Just ignore the idiots, don't feed the troll, and don't flame. If you're flamed, either ignore it or let the topic die.

I've recently realized it's just not worth it. Sure, a good discussion died because some idiot came along and ruined it. Oh well. As the saying (sort of) goes, "Stuff happens."

May I remind you of this?

May I remind you of this?

You may. However that wasn't among the things cited "growing the game" and such that were in the press release. And never anywhere did anyone say why St. Louis. I'm pretty sure that we've guessed some of the reasons, but we don't know for sure.

Mod note: Then you will not only get warned for quoting a bad post, but you will also receive infraction points for rude comments/attacking a member which WILL get you some time off the gym. P_A. See above for Mod Note. Qwachansey, same deal.

People ..... There is no need to be afraid of anyone here. However how you react to a person's post will show how mature you are. No one seriously wants to get into a real fight for something as silly as a post on the gym. Yes, you certainly have a point Amphy - be likable, and people will like you. Please remember this lesson in your own comments as well.

Now look at Pokebeach. Sure, there are a lot of young people and Pokebeach has it's own set of problems, but when you go to their RTC, you will find threads on Abortion, Politics and what not, ALL BEING DISCUSSED without the heat that Pokegym members seem to have. Which again, is strange as KIDS AND TEENS ACT MORE LIKE ADULTS ON ADULT SUBJECTS THEN REAL ADULTS ON POKEGYM. I mean, there is a thread on weather the year 2012 is really all what it's cracked up to be and it's been active for almost 2 whole months without actual trolling and flaming! Sure the discussion has cooled down but people didn't kill it off because they think it's nonsense for example.

Sadly we can't have this, believe me I love a good debate expecially on hot button issues like this. I pride myself on being able to debate stuff rationally without really losing my temper (the only time on here I can remember was a debate over a military issue, and some loser kept making anti Troop comments, honestly do you blame me) We did have a nice one on *** Marriage a while back that stayed open for a while, so maybe there is hope.

pokebeach is modded by teenagers which is totally hilarious.
WPM admits to being lazy.
i get warnings for absolutely nothing. (I hardly post there anyway)

Sure, there are 18+ people that behave like Teens and give warnings etc. for absolutely nothing.(Holy Star being a good example in my book)
And WPM is only 'hosting' the website, all the Super Mods and Junior Mods do all the work....like it goes in real life....lol

Pokebeach really IS less strict then the Gym. But the members tend to be more easy going so it seems because of all the youth. There are however, as stated, some rotten apples in the members AND Moderators group....which is the only downside to the Beach for as far as I have seen.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

If you love a good debate. Then why not visit Pokebeach once in a while. It won't hurt....:thumb:

PokeGym is modded by teenagers, too.

Azure Kite's my age, and he's one of the best mods on PokeGym, in my opinion. (I hope I spelled his username right)

What's totally hilarious is that people play the age-trump card so much. But since this post is coming from a teenager, I'm sure this is all totally irrelevant to you adults.

They have to be nice first, but once they cross that line though..... POW!! Right in the kisser!!

I'm kidding. I really am a nice guy though.

Teenagers are better in my book. Adults are too busy with life or think it's okay to apply the experiences with their own children and their jobs to every person on the internet (sometimes kind of arrogantly and with a subtle or embedded "you are younger and therefore are wrong because I have lived longer" mentality). Teens are more "with it" with what's going on the net and what's acceptable, both with the "rules" of the net in general and with their peers. Responsible teens modding regular teens = equality and fairness! :D Remember, most of the teens nowadays grew up on the internet. The older adults were introduced to it after their own life experiences already formed. The internet is apart of our generation and we inherently know how to handle it better.

Lazy does not equal busy!! *power sprays Tina* I don't do most of the work on the forums with modding (which is why there are mods in the first place), but I set the template for what they should be doing, making them an extension of myself with their own inherent, unique flavors. If I had to mod my forums I would never have time to do anything else.

In general though, I tend to think age means nothing when it comes to the internet (but JUST the internet - adults usually know better IRL). Just because you are an adult and have lived longer IRL doesn't mean you know jack squat about how to set the environment for younger generations who are rampant on the net. Kids want to talk about anything and everything - no one should restrict them or flame them for having different points of views. After all, newer generations always "update" society, so you can't expect the old and the new to be compatible or force the new to hold to your views (even though sometimes they may be wrong or psyco-crazy about what they believe). Maybe I'm just generalizing, but that's what I think. Maybe the Gym is at a disadvantage because it has a lot of age groups interacting from all across the board whereas mine just has young adults and below who are all on the same page... who knows?

EDIT: And you got a warning from one of the mods for reviving a dead thread. How is that "nothing"? Read the rules ya fuel! :p

Okay, I've been watching the RTC for some time now, and I have to conlcude that there are a lot of wannabe adults on Pokegym. I'm not talking about kids and teens, but real adults. This I find to be disturbing as there generally is no place for a good discussion in the RTC as they strangely turn into flame wars or targets for trolls. Several good threads with potential have died in this way, ToxicTaipan's Common Sense Thread being a painful example as the thread managed to get killed within 4 pages of it's existence due to unaccepted disagreements and more.

Now the reason I post this is because recently a thread got killed that should not have even be able to get killed, but hey, "successful trolls are successful" if you allow them, even with the 'strickt' rules. I either suggest to harshen the rules, or remove the RTC as there is no real good discusion possible., which again, is strange. There are a lot of 'adults' on this site. Y'know, the type that is generally older then 18. The strange thing is, most of those 18+ people DON'T SEEM TO BE ABLE TO BEHAVE.

Now look at Pokebeach. Sure, there are a lot of young people and Pokebeach has it's own set of problems, but when you go to their RTC, you will find threads on Abortion, Politics and what not, ALL BEING DISCUSSED without the heat that Pokegym members seem to have. Now after reading this, don't tell me that there has been an alarm going of in your head of how people act on this forum, giving Pokegym a rather bad name to those that are paying attention. So either keep your mouth shut or behave yourself when posting things and actually take things to heart for a change.
Dude i want to have fun on the gym. I love the gym much better than the beach ( that is a diffrent thread on why though) but the real answer is i do not want to have a all out war with people with subjects that are nor the palce or time to talk about. Like Abortion and politics, each person has their feelings about them and people will become offended about each side so save those topics for school and just focus on the fun stuff:biggrin: and not the bad stuff:nonono:
