Players who can build good decks and play decent enough lose any shot in a hgss-on format if they dont own all the cards needed to build a decent deck. Sure they could very easily build a DECENT to above average deck but who wants to take a sub par deck to nats or worlds? especially when you know that you have a great deck that gets around sabledonk with no problem with the cards you own from md-ar. Nothing is more frustrating then feeling like your money(therefore the work you did to get that money) went to waste.
Lets point out a few very simple flaws in this, shall we? First off, which sets are ACTUALLY more prohibitive? A set like Majestic Dawn, which is near impossible to find, or any of the HGSS sets which, last time I checked, could readily be purchased at the local Walmart? Which cards are worth the most money? Uxie X and Luxray X were sitting as high as 80 dollars a pop this year. Broken Time Space, and the SP trainers also hit a very high cost for their rarity. Sableye looked to be doing so as well. Lvl X cards in general, due to their increased rarity, were much more expensive, on average, than a Prime, or Legend piece. The new cards are very easy to afford, and compared to every other TCG on the market, borderline dirt cheap. To hear ANYONE complain that POKEMON is "too hard to get cards for " makes me sick.
I understand some people may be frustrated because they like to dump off their old cards right before they rotate at nationals, and now, the price drop has already hit, but lets be realistic. This entire debate has been going on FOREVER now, everyone was aware it was a possibility, acting like it "couldn't happen" and not taking it into account is stubborn at best. If you have a pile of pre HGSS cards you are upset with having not sold, you should have started to empty them off once debate for this decision really started to pick up. Keep the stuff you may use for decks, and get rid of the rest.
Also, rotation is a great business model. It promotes sales, and helps the overall growth of the game. Combine it with a new set, showcasing the newest generation of Pokemon, and Pokemon really looks to be capitalizing on Black and White. The new cards become good enough to play now, opposed to being outclassed by the older sets, which will be far more inviting to new and returning players who may have jumped in due to BW.
Lastly, the format we had PRIOR to BW was NOT GOOD. It was stale, imbalanced, and STILL very luck based. I managed to obtain an 1861 rating by States and feel extremely blessed to have do so. This format IS unhealthy WITHOUT the BW rules. Not "unplayable" unhealthy, as the post BW rules one threatens to be, but not a format worth defending when an alternative exists! Postponing the rules change may be "simpler" ( if it was even an option ) but it certainly does LESS to fix the state of the game.
