Worlds Invite Structure ?!

We've been in this recession for a while now, and it takes 6 months before it can be called that. Growths and trends can be predicted in advance, before that even happens. This recession started in December 07, but got alot worse after September 08. 2 years is generous to predict the economic situation.

I didn't realise the locations were chosen 2 years ahead, but that really doesn't make that much of a difference.

It appears OP has a contract with Hilton Hotels to host and the Japanese contingent seems to prefer a "vacation" area as the location for Worlds. Yes, we host it, but it is their game. You tell me how many locations fit that description and it not cost some money to go???

I agree that HA is expensive and maybe attendance will be a bit lower than when worlds is in Cali or FL, but many will still go.

If contracts for large events are agreed on two years in advance should we be worried that we don't have a US Nationals location yet?

^That is for Worlds, since it appears OP has a deal w/ Hilton.

Nats is a different animal. For years, it was in Columbus OH with Origins. When Origins screwed the registration issue up in '08, OP went solo in St Louis in '09. Dunno what the plan is for '10, but I am sure we will hear from them as soon as they are able to let us know.

EDIT: Thx TfP....I messed up my years by 1..corrected now

Everyone would like Worlds to be in a place like Hawaii, not just the Japanese, but money is always a factor - especially at the moment. There is options. Either locations are chosen at the right years according to the Economic situation - so Worlds in Hawaii would occur during a boom when more people are able to go. It could still be there the same amount of years, but done more logically. There are other places near Japan, not just Hawaii that are really nice holiday locations.

I understand why Worlds is in the USA, someone posted the amount of registered players a while ago and the USA was by far the highest. Even with it's bigger size taken into account, its a logical place to hold Worlds. Obviously it didn't include information for Japanese numbers, but from what I've read from Tego's posts - it seems Japan would have a high player base. Games are made shorter, and people have to queue - this isn't a worry anywhere else. Since they have a seperate OP base, surely there must be employees out there who could host a Worlds?

Not what I meant. You seemed to be "we've already been there once, why are we going again," and I was saying that I doubt very many people that were there in 2007 will be there in 2010, particularly in the juniors and seniors, so I think you're in the minority of people that will be at both, making it a new experience for most players. Not that THAT means I disagree; I'm sure the total attendance will be lower than non-Hawaiian Worlds.

Besides, what's a Drewless Worlds?

It's not a Worlds at all.....??

It is more of the cost than anything. I don't have an issue having in Hawaii, but when the rooms are 300 per night and the food costs about 50+ per day it is a bit much. That's not including anything else you might do in Hawaii that you might need to spend it on. I understand what you are saying about new players being there, but Worlds isn't Worlds when players who earned an invite turn it down because it is too expensive to go. If 2007 was any indication, I would have to agree that lower attendance is going to happen.

I love POP and their logic.

They obviously want to encourage kids to go to college, since they give scholarships for doing well at big events. IMO this is a great idea!

On the other hand, they make it next to impossible for those who do go to college to get a trip via rating invite, since it's somewhat difficult for full time students to do any form of traveling, not to mention time restraints. On top of all that, they INSIST on putting worlds in places like Hawaii. I have my doubts that many college students can afford that little trip. I love this game, but if it comes down to being able to afford college or pokemon, I pick college.

So... ya... pretty much they seem to be saying "We want you all to go to college and think it's something everyone should aim for, however, the second you're IN college, you'll never be able to play competitively again" mwahahahaha

HA! I've figured it all out! To deal with the ever increasing amount of new players in the master dev, the just make it so you can't actually afford worlds so you give up and stop playing this stupid game!/sarcasm

Seriously POP, consider those of us who don't have the time/money to go to places like Hawaii. I don't have a problem with it moving around a little. I just dislike that it's been on the west coast for 2 years running now.

Why do you always make arguments that do not apply to you? You don't have a job, right? What are you doing in the summer in the timeframe of Worlds? Even summer classes might not overlap Worlds. Despite taking summer classes, I've always been able to go to Nats without missing a day of class.

If you love this game so much, not going to Worlds should not be a problem. Sounds like a good time to look for potential tournament sites.

Going to nats isn't the problem. Being able to find the time to get a rating invite to go to worlds, then finding how the heck to get the money for it is.

So what, you want POP to limit every player to only be allowed to play in local tournaments for points? Well that's a bummer, Regionals isn't on my block, guess I'm not playing in it this year...:nonono:

The only thing they "do" that makes it "impossible for college players to get a trip via ranking invite" is OMG LET PEOPLE HOST TOURNAMENTS. How DARE they, those fiends!

Just to chime in...

College takes time out of your life, and can make it hard to travel and organize activities. So does work, so does volunteering, etc., etc. I don't think POP is making it hard for anyone to compete, and are proving that by making States, Regionals, and Nationals the same K value.

As far as Worlds goes, yes, you have to travel for it and yes, Hawaii is an expensive destination. The best way to protest World's being in HI, in my mind, is to not attend at all.

I hope everyone who wants to make it to Worlds gets to go, but I think no matter where the destination/what the circumstances that would be impossible, and I think we've all known that for quite a while.

Good luck in balancing school and Pokemon, DP. I know it can be difficult.

Even a Minimum Wage (That's $7.25 an hour) job can earn you about 200-300$ in a summer by just working 1-3 times a week for 5 hours, and I KNOW on-campus jobs tend earn a bit more than that, and those work around your school schedule. Granted, I'm not the one actually paying for my college, my parents are plus a 5k$ student loan I'll have to deal with later, but even still. Yeah, it may not be enough to cover the entirety, but it's defiantly a nice sum of money. Work during the winter break and that'll give you a boost to that total as well. It's tight, but do-able.

Though you do have a point on time. But even at that, if you care about the game, classes and classwork don't take up all day unless you've got some CRAAAZY major/school, so make the time. If it matters to you, you have to be the one to find the time and use it. Bribing yourself with the game for doing something usually works. :3

The lack of an invite structure is actually really unbelievable since we are now well into the season. I'm very disappointed more information isn't available yet. I'm fairly worried at this point.

I think all signs are pointing to a better system. We were already told that its only INTERNATIONAL invites that are haywire...the only thing most americians need to worry about is the same old *we have more players we need more invites* while international is like...*we'd like to play some day too please*

Coming from a player who's been to worlds 06, 07 & 08 without ever being in the main event....please don't complain any more....i can't take any more complaining.

Let me clarify my post a little bit. It is difficult to properly plan for a season without knowing exactly what I am planning for. Being a poor post-college student who is unemployed and owing student loan repayments, I have to be as frugal as possible this season. The longer we wait, the less likely it will be that I will be able to make as many events as I'd truly like to.

I'd like to hope sdrawkcab is correct and the extra time lets the system get fully fleshed out and revamped in areas where it may be necessary. I've always been a big fan of the rating invite structure, but as the game grows, it does need to be updated, and if the wait means the system we get in the end is better off as a result, despite personal inconveniences, its a worthy wait.

Side note: Thanks to auto-spellchecker, I NEVER can seem to spell inconvenience right the first try!

Agreed with Ruiner. Although it's nice that they're trying to make sure the system is A-okay, just how late is too late? When City Championships are over?

Is this a strategical marketing move? Either way, many people are eagerly anticipating something big this upcoming Monday, as it's two months later in being announced than just about every other year.
