2009 Regionals Attendance Thread

Huh. There were the same number of Regionals last year as there were this year. I organized them by approximate area of coverage. Maryland and Virginia are in roughly the same area, so I lumped them together. North Carolina and Georgia may not be in the exact same area, but they were the closest out of the ones that I could find. In terms of the player base, the one in Virginia this year most closely matches with the one in Maryland last year, unless my geography is completely off.

Maybe that was a bad idea, I'm not completely certain. But, if Maryland didn't get the Regional, then the one that would most closely match with it is Virginia. Of course, Virginia also matches closely with North Carolina, but then Georgia doesn't really match with anything from last year.
At the risk of getting yelled at again:
Last year, Maryland and Virginia were not traditionally grouped in the same "regional" area. Maryland's regional area was under title "mid-atlantic" which included Penn and Delaware. Virginia belonged under the regional area of SE, which included the Carolinas.
This year, instead of grouping states into regions and trying to find equal distance in each region, it looks like there was more thought in simply placing the regionals equal distance north and south among all of the eastern states. In doing that, the traditional regional nicknames may no longer be applicable for a comparison. For example, Florida and Georga were both in the Southern Region area. However, both states have their own regionals this year which presents the issue that Lawman brought up: not very many of GA players had to choose bewteen Florida or NC. Also, a lot of VA players this year didn't have to choose between MD and NC (a lot of them chose MD)

I had my labels up for a couple of weeks before posting this, and nobody complained about the matches I made. I assumed that meant they were roughly correct.

Tough call since this year NC and MD were replaced with GA and VA. I know when the traditional names were in place, NC was Southeast and FL was Southern. But those names and borders have been replaced by actual location. Tough calling VA Southeast or Mid-Atlantic since GA is Southeast and PA is also Mid-Atlantic. If you compare last year's MD to VA (by proximity) then we increased from 133 to 192. Good luck with the comparison.
