Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

2013-2014 Modified Format?

Pokemon isn't any "cheaper" or more "expensive" than any other game or how it was any previous time. Pokemon packs have always been between $3-$5 and starter decks $12-$15. Pokemon doesn't make a deck $500+ the players do. It's supply and demand. If people are willing to pay $50 for a single card then it will stay that way until they won't. Take a card like yanmega from HGSS it went from being a $3 card to $75 because it was the flavor of the month.

All cards become less expensive with more options. A format with, let's say, 20 competitive decks which range in around 50+ attacking pokemon, the big cards get watered down a bit, there is less demand for them because there are other options. In a format where there are only 2-3 decks, the chase cards that make up those decks are going to go for a lot because they are one of a very few options.

The competitive card pool is shallow right now, and thus the price of the these top tier cards are going to be very high. From what I have read in this topic it seems that having lots of deck options and having competitive inexpensive archetypes go hand in hand.

If you login to your play account on Pokemon.com, it says it's the 2014 season now. My championship and play points have reset. So no rotation I assume?

Usually the floor rules don't take effect until 9/1, regardless of when the tournament season begins, so I wouldn't draw any conclusions as of yet.

The same occured last year. And guess what, rotation had come :)
But last year there was an earlier announcement on June 15 specifically stating that the new season would begin on July 9.

There has been no such announcement this year, which is causing confusion and uncertainty. (If a grassroots tournament is held next weekend, would the play point count towards the 2012-2013 season or the 2013-2014 season? This is not a trivial matter for those players who are just under the top 100 in play points and who want one more point in order to get the better player rewards.)

I'm frustrated we have no format announcement yet, but at the same time won't waste much breath or effort trying to figure it out. Choose a good 'un, P!P.

Logan, correct me if I'm wrong, but by your analysis, it looks like they like keeping 9 formats in at any time, tend to rotate 4 sets at a time, and rotate whenever there's 13+ sets that are legal.
There was a time when OP had reached a desired number of sets to enable a healthy modified format and wanted to stick to rotating 4 sets a year. BW changed that because of the rules changes.

Don't mix up season start and rotation. These are two different things. I lived in conviction that the end of season was already announced last summer. But I'm sorry if it wasn't.

TOM includes file with start and end dates of few recent seasons and 2013 season ended on 2013-07-07.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that new age categories are also in effect, you have to play your tournaments. even grassroots ones, with them, the only exceptions are LCQ and Worlds.

Im guessing we are going to have a midseason rotation once the X and Y era begins. If they are going to be syncing up releases, it would make sense to happen then.

From a business perspective it makes sense for them to wait til the very last minute to make an announcement. Once they do they will a very steep drop in the sales of whatever sets they plan to rotate. Maybe on the business side there are concerns about big name stores carrying their products. I know recently in my town Walmart stopped carrying tcg games all together. I was surprised but pokemon isn't really big here or a lot of other places for that matter. And the people who do play definately don't buy packs from walmart at $5 a pack after tax. Just like any other product, if it doesnt sell then they have to drop it.

But the sales from stores don't impact Pokemon at all. Pokemon has already rid themselves of whatever product you buy in the stores several steps before you, the customer, buys it.

Would be nice for those not going to Worlds to be able to get ready and practice for the next set in our free time, but since we don't know the rotation, if any, that's kind of hard to do.

That seems really strange to me, because MTG is the #1 game (of any kind) in the U.S. by volume of sales.

I get what your saying but I don't think you get what I was saying. In my town walmart doesn't even carry TCG games at all anymore. They just don't sell. When they did I'd see tons and tons of stock just sitting there. We have like 5 walmarts in our town. Imagine if its 500 walmarts that stopped carrying their product. That is a big impact. Kids these days have way easier access to cheaper product online or at local card shops. That goes for MTG or any other card game as well.

I guess that's true, but not to go back to this old argument that has been beaten to death, but the competitive player market makes up a very small percentage of the people who buy Pokemon Cards, especially in the target demographic of 14 and under.
