Holon Farmer Ruling

Everyone coming needs to read this!!

Is it normal to just receive a ruling without the underlying explanation? I'd certainly like to hear his rationale behind why you wouldn't be able to retrieve the card you just discarded - that's the reason I was (note: WAS) running this card in my SMP deck.

Discard a card from your hand. If you can't discard a card from your hand, you can't play this card.

Boom. Into my discard pile goes a (Basic Energy/Basic Pokémon/Pokémon Evolution) card.

Search your discard pile for 3 basic Energy cards andy any combination of 3 Basic Pokémon or Evolution cards, show them to your opponent, and put them on top of your deck. Shuffle your deck afterward.

Since following the first part of the instructions, my discard pile now contains my discarded (Basic Energy/Basic Pokémon/Pokémon Evolution) card, why shouldn't I be able to take that card? The instructions don't say, "Oh, by the way, except for that card you just discarded."

Confused, and possibly a touch miffed,
S.

I agree with Shane...This ruling is rediculous

1. You should HAVE to get 3 and 3
2. You should be able to get any 3 and 3 you want...even the one you discarded.

I wouldn't go so far as to say ridiculous, but I would like to hear the thought process behind what led to this decision. As far as trainers go, I've always been under the impression that the 'up to' wording was very specific and important. As such, although I didn't like this interpretation (I like the idea of taking whatever I could find, be it 3 or less), I believed this card to mean '3 and 3 of each exactly or you're outta luck.' Similarly, I don't see any wording preventing me from taking what I've just put into the discard pile. If its in there, its in there. Is there some other, broader ruling about cards discarded as part of a trainer's effect? If so, the whole SMP concept is in trouble, as it partially relies on retrieving (with DX Metagross' Super Connectivity power) Psychic and/or Metal energies from the discard, and a popular way to get them into the discard is with TV Reporter.

Still wondering,
S.

Wait...where did TVR come from? I thought we were talking about farmer

We are...what I was referring to is the general retrieving of cards from the discard pile that were placed there by a Trainer card mechanism. The circumstances are slightly different, but what I am asking is, if I am unable to retrieve the card I discarded to play Holon Farmer, would I similarly be prevented from retrieving the card I discarded to play TV Reporter? Rocket's Mission? What makes the determination as to whether a card is retrievable or not, and how are we supposed to keep track of un-retrievable cards?

To all our PokeBuddies in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area, Good luck this weekend.

Make sure Papa Birch bakes his cookies and save some for me.

I would have to say that because a condition of playing a Holon trainer is you have to discard something where the other cards in reference don't have that requirement first.

I don't agree with the ruling in whole. I feel you should be able to take back the card you discarded in order to play the Holon card as it is in the discard pile when you search your discard pile for the cards, but of course I will abide by & enforce the ruling as it is.

And therein lies the 'difference' between the cards that I alluded to in my previous post. The logical extension from this ruling, then, is that since I am unable to retrieve the discarded card with the Holon Farmer, you would have to restrict retrieval of this card from the discard pile by any discard pile search mechanism. Otherwise, you have no basis for the Holon Farmer restriction.

S.

I have to agree that I think the ruling is wrong. It hurts my head when I try to think of it logically. There is a whole section of what you need to do before even playing the card. This comes before even searching the discard. There is space between the discarding to play the card and then what playing the card does. I don't understand how I can not get the card I discarded since it is in my discard pile before I get to search it. The card says my discarded card has to be if I want to even play the card. How can it be off limits if it has to be there before I can play the card.

MPB.... I guess we need to discuss Holon Farmer as you are the PTO and have the "ULTIMATE DECISION" *Pokemon Fans on knees bowing in awe!* on all Rulings for your tournys! GL to everyone and I am sure we will have an announcement Before we start so dont come asking over and over... THanks Everyone!

We will go with the ruling of "Holon Farmer" made by "PokePop'' since he is part of Team Compedium. We will use this as the ruling for this card until PUI hears back from Japan or they over rule this with another one. This is the only way that "Holon Farmer" can be ruled the same through out the USA.
