Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

gengar -- viable for worlds?

And @the "LOL AYLAM BEAT DIALGA G" comment - Those weren't really fair wins. Don't use those as an example. Aylam really did lucksack. He has a LOT of skill, but a LOT of luck carried him to the 1st place. Even if you dont lucksack on fainting spell, there are other things where luck comes into play.

Stop hatting on Aylam. You did read Pooka's report right? The metagame is so diverse right now. Didn't Pooka vs like 6 DPL decks. You will have always have good and bad matchups. As well as a little bit of luck.

As for Gengar being viable for worlds, like everyone else said yes to juniors and seniors division. Master ehhh. If you can get past the 2nd turn and play your hand right, you can easily play around Gengar.

Gengar shouldn't even do good in seniors, its too easy to play around, gotta give some of the seniors credit to being good players, and any mediocre player can outplay gengar anyway.

So after a lot of testing...
Gengar is definitely worlds-winning quality, if you know how to play it. Sure, you can play around gengar...to an extent. And there are definitely techs to help with that. ;)

I played Gengar at my States and Nationals, with good results. But it's lost it's suprise factor, and the truth is it can be played around by the people who know how - most people at Worlds will.

I've only tested RR wise with Luxape, and have only lost once with a power heavy deck. I love that deck, but in a tournament like Worlds, people will play around it too easily.

What are you all talking about? Gengar is an Amazing deck choice for worlds. But for everyone saying "It only does 30 Damage a turn" and "If you get a lot of damage on an SP, they'll just Poketurn it" you obviously don't know how to play the deck. The way Gengar wins is by taking all the free prizes. Every deck runs Uxie or Azelf. Every one of those that your opponent plays down is just a free prize for Gengar. Crobat then Shadow Room for the KO EASILY. The only problem is when they Unown G everything, and don't have any trainers in their hand. Now what? NIDOQUEEN. Smack them for an average of 80 a turn with Ruthless tail. And then get the KO with Crobats/Shadow Room for 30 next turn. Oh and on top of all this if you flip heads on fainting spell, then you have that going for you too. Gengar/Queen is a good deck. Dialga is a tough matchup. No lie. But against Luxape? Legos? Pitch Dark anyone? One of the best attacks on a Basic these days? Just stall with that til you can get setup. Test the deck before you act like you know everything about it. Take it from the people who did well with the deck at Nats.

But Worlds has the best players, who know not to play Uxie or Azelf unless they are really needed. All Gengars attack's and powers can be played around. And from my testing, Luxape beats Gengar. I have tested this deck extensively and actually like the deck, but I don't find it as viable in a tournament like Worlds with such a high skill level.

No, it isn't. I didn't even think it was viable for Nationals because everyone was teching against it (and it clearly didn't do well in Masters).

A lot easier to tech for than Luxape.

This is the one deck I am 100% certain will not win Worlds.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

That's when you ALWAYS play them...

Yes, but they won't play the Uxie for desperate draw like usual. They'll play Unown G AND Uxie in the same turn, or drop Uxie, and Psychic Restore KO Gengar without even letting Uxie sit around. Yes, it's harder to do with Nidoqueen, but the matchup really revolves around how early they get the Queen up anyways.

Lol? So the most highly skilled players in the world are less likely to attempt the play their strategy around the opponent's deck?

The most highly skilled players ALREADY only use uxie / azelf in ABSOLUTE EMERGENICES. >_>

But they are likely to be more cautious in dropping Uxies and Azelf's against Gengar in situations where they would playing other decks. And although highly skilled players are cautious in dropping Uxies, I doubt they only play them in 'ABSOLUTE EMERGENCIES', most games ( Gengar aside ) tend to have an Uxie/Azelf on the bench.

Most of your posts/arguments don't make sense. You previously posted -

WAKE UP. Gengar is NOT that great of a card. It's NEVER a good thing to let your opponent determine your damage.
All you have to do to win against gengar is keep your hand clear of trainers, G your claydol and one other important pokemon, and work around fainting spell. You WIN. They can't do ANYTHING.

Then got knocked out of Top 16 by Gengar?

Indeed I did.
I didn't know that because I don't like a deck means I automatically win against it 100% of the time.
First game I couldnt do anything due to a bad hand.
Second game he couldnt do anything due to a bad hand.
Third game was...meh, until I found out my prizes. x.x

I am thinking gengar for world. I've been playing it for a while now and really hasnt let me down, Even with all the new techs I've been trying.

Well, I would be happy with all the Mother Gengars in Senior Divison... :D

the thing that makes gengar nasty is just fainting spell peole WILL play diffrently when they have to gengar but a smart player will see gengars weakness which consit that you CAN control there damage output, if you can make gengars damage out put 0 then congrats YOU WILL BEAT GENGAR (or júst sableye it like me)

Gengar is a pretty good deck in Senoirs and Jounoirs right now but I only see Gengar winning in Senoirs because of the mass amount of people playing it in Jounoirs I think a Machamp, Speedrill, or a New deck will win and Masters I think a rogue will win world but for Gengar... I think you should try it in Senoirs but go with a different deck in the other divisons.

I played Beedrill w/ 3 unown g and played against a gengar in top 64 of senoirs. I played an opponent with a great deck, with an even better player using the deck that he thought he could do best with, Sam L. He and I played a great second game after a donk on me, luck is part of the game and so is skill. You cannot with a major tournament with 200+ people competing in it without the other. I played gengar, he won the game because he played better than I did, he rightfully won the game and made top 8 with the deck. Congrats to Sam for making top 8 and congrats to aylam for winning the largest tournament ever, you are without a dought one of the best pokemon players in the world.:thumb:
