Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Ideas that PUI could consider for next year...

Thats a good sign.
Tru 'nuff! Usually they only comment when there's some misconceptions, or something that needs to be clarified. Maybe they're mulling all this over. What everyone needs to keep in mind that sometimes change can happen, sometimes their hands are tied, sometimes when it is possible to make some changes, those need to be done slowly, and some can be instituted right away (depending upon the severity of the problem). So though we may not see much change right away, you never know, maybe we'll see some changes soon. Patience is important.

I only started in January so I don't know how things used to be, or even what the system in Japan is like, but I wouldn't mind seeing more Cities. As far as I know, there was only one in Oregon (though I could easily be completely wrong -- don't quote me), and if you couldn't get there then you were stuck. (This was actually only a sticking point for me because I discovered that they give out special "City Championships"-stamped cards there, and I collect as well as play.) It makes sense to me to only have a single State and a single Regional, but it would be nice to have more premier events to raise ratings, practice, and the like.
Also, I know this is absolutely not POP's fault, but it seems that events always start 10-30 minutes late, and the organizer always underestimates the expected turnout by about 20%.

There were at least 8 City Championships in Oregon this year, and probably more then that. City Chamionshipps run from the last week in November through the 1st week in January. An usually ther eare one or two each and every weekend in that timeframe.

Here is another idea I stumbled across from a topic made last year... Seems like it is still a viable solution today.....

When I first brought this up, I was thinking about ALL the great players that I have faced in past years, months and even days. MOST of which are NOT gonna be competing in the WORLD championship. I am disheartend about this, as they are QUALITY players. I am not just speaking for players in my immediate area. I have played in every world championship that PUI has put on. I have played MANY players from around the world, all of which were formitable opponents.

In 2006, the best player in the world, Yamato, (still debatable) was NOT even able to play in the World Championship. This is not what I wanted to see. How can I call myself the second best player in the world, if Yamato wasn't even playing to dispute that. Like in any competition, you gotta BEAT the best to BE the best. I dont feel that was the case in 2006. Even moreso, It wont be the case in years to come.

So now, onto a proposal.....

The world championship should be that.... WORLD Championship... Crown the best player in the world. The field for this should be endless. I want to play against anyone and everyone who thinks they can compete at that level. An OPEN event of sorts. If you can make it there, go there. I propose that this event has no invites and/or travel vouchers paid for by nintendo. It is after all for the biggest bragging rights in the world, people will show up to try and claim that title. I also suggest to make it fair to all, this particular event be held in DIFFERENT locations around the world yearly, to give everyone equal oppritunity to attend. If I knew about it 6-8 months prior to the event I'm sure I could save the money to get there. Do not try and say it would be a rich mans advantage. Communication would be key here.

Now, onto the whole "well what do we play for then??? Rankings, Qualifiers, Nationals... WHY BOTHER? you ask...

To solve this, I think PUI has it right on the money... A huge event celebrating all the hard work and effort put in by individuals. Winning tournaments, highest rankings in your country, travling throughout the year to play,etc... should all be invited to a tournament to celebrate that. A tropical mega battle, of sorts. This would be a tournament EXCLUSIVE to those who "did the time" to get the prize. This tournament would have all the bells and whistles of the current Worlds event, only a different name. (I propose its called The Jimmy Open) This would be a great event showcasing the players that "made the grade" for that season. This would eleviate all the bickering about the best players not able to compete in the world championship.

Our role in this is to provide them with constructive criticism along with some possible solutions. They do not know it all, (although, some players think they (PUI) do) and could use some honest feedback from the players to incorporate new and more player friendly structure to the game.

This is my suggestion to really highten the focus on a WORLD level. Who knows maybe some day it will happen.

Jimmy

Or maybe byes to those who earn "invites" via rankings and nationals placigs and whatnot at worlds. And make it an open event =D

How cheap would be using byes at WORLDS? You go through all the process of actually getting to play in the biggest tournament in the world (debatable) and choose to just skip a round so you have a better chance of winning? Seriously, if I ever got to play in Worlds, I'd cherish every single round of play. It'd be playing against the best of the best from around the world, something most people don't get to do each weekend at league.

Now, if they made it an open event, I could agree with byes. You can't say you would run into the same caliber of players in an open event as you would in an invite-only event.

I would love that but its unfair to a lot of people who don't live in the US, regardless if we have the best players or not. You would basically have the attendance of the grinder added into worlds, plus some more people that knew they could get into worlds for free. It would be filled with all kinds of noobs and just takes away the atmosphere of it being "worlds".

Or, if we're talking about Open event with Byes, how about this suggestion?

Keep the same basic structure as right now. However, don't limit the participants in Day 2 so much. Anybody who gets a .500+ record (or something along those lines) in the first day gets to move on to the second day of Worlds. Call it something different, such as a Three Day World Championship. There will be Byes to Day Two, awarded exactly the same as Invites are right now. It's been long proven that the Worlds tournament area can hold as many people as US Nationals, why not let em all play for as long as possible?

I doubt any pokemon event could be longer than 2 days unless there was a holiday on the third day (or first day). People can't be expected to skip work/school to play in a pokemon tournament.

umm like heres an idea maybe they could make swiss rounds best out of 3 cuz i am tired of losing a round over a bad start.my deck wins 90% of the games it plays and %50 of the loses are due to bad starting hands and bad draws.i know it would make events longer but hey what can you do.also there needs to be a push fro more local events luckily my local store holds them but i know some aren't as lucky.

If you can make it there, go there.

But people won't be able to make it there. This would _decrease_ the number of great world-class opponents in the tournament, the opposite of what you want. Today's situation, where a handful of the best players in the world can't attend Worlds, would just get worse.

I propose that this event has no invites and/or travel vouchers paid for by nintendo. It is after all for the biggest bragging rights in the world, people will show up to try and claim that title.

Let's say the Netherlands or Sweden has the best Junior player in the world, a kid with incredible talent, but Worlds is held in Australia or California that particular year. If that Junior player has regular parents, he will NOT be able to go to Worlds and claim his title. No way. If he has very dedicated Pokémon-supportive parents, then he might be able to. I'd say the Junior field (and possible Senior field too) at such a World Championship would be a very small group of die-hard INTL Pokémon fans' kids swimming in a big pool of random players from the particular area Worlds is held that year. Like a big Stadium Challenge/Super Trainer Showdown with a few INTL guests to spice things up for those lucky enough to meet any of them during Swiss.

If you can't afford to travel to Worlds, or can't prioritize over other family vacations/expenses, what more is there to communicate than the message "sorry, kid, there's no way we can go to Worlds"?

This would eleviate all the bickering about the best players not able to compete in the world championship.

And open up a big box of other ugly problems instead. Jimmy, this would be fun for people like you and me - die-hard Pokémaniacs who have been to every Super Trainer Showdown and Worlds there has ever been (I assume you also have been to them all, is this right?) and who wouldn't miss one, for nothing in the world. But what about getting totally new faces to experience Worlds? What about all the new players waiting all over the world, ready to win their first travel award and experience Worlds for the first time? Players whose parents don't know what Worlds is, and don't want to know (before their kid suddenly gives them a free plane trip to somewhere nice).

This is my suggestion to really highten the focus on a WORLD level. Who knows maybe some day it will happen.

It did happen: It was called the Super Trainer Showdown. It was very, very fun, but not good enough (for anyone but Americans) in the long run.

Thank you Tego for you detailed response....

I think the prize structure for each country involved can still be used. POP could still allow paid trips for top 1 or 2 players for each countries national event. That would not change. You could also continue to implement rankings for international players.

I am not saying to take away the prize structure from international players. They SHOULD be able to make it to worlds. NO invite needed.

JImmy

They should just open up US nats to anyone and let international players play in our nats.

THE GAUNTLET.
Sounds like an interesting idea for those willing to use the money to get there - but don't you think most US players think it's hard enough to get an invite by Nationals without adding more non resident players? I can't see that happening any time soon. Not only that, but then it opens up the possibility that all Nationals be open - which would be disaster for Canadian Nationals - and others in Europe that aren't far geographically from larger player bases in another country. No, I don't think I'd appreciate that - nor would a lot of other players.

This has also been done before, with mixed results. In the 2001 season, all Nationals were completely open. That's why the 2001 Swedish Nationals (or STS Qualifier, as it was called back then) had 612 players in total, including Danish, Finnish, UK (and probably lots of other) players. And that's why in a Swedish Nationals Master was won by a UK player (Freddy K) and Seniors was won by a Norwegian (me). It sure was fun back then, but it didn't seem like it was much fun for the Swedes ... With Juniors (10-) being the only age group that was won by a Swede, the newspapers reporting on Swedish Nats focused only on the Junior winner ... trying to (almost) omit the fact that the other free trips across the atlantic to NY/NJ were given out to foreigners.

They should just make the grinder a separate tournament with invites going to the top 8+x, with trickle down in effect. Just to get a feel for the best of the best players =P

Similar to the free side event Friday before US nationals where Zach went 9-0 with Banette which later evolved into Rambolt which won worlds.

*the way it is now, to enter the grinder you can't have an invite- thus entering would forfeit your invite. My proposed idea would be that ANYONE can do it, and simply have trickledown invites. That way people could play in the tournament even if they already had an invite.

Just call it "The Grinder"- and it'll just be known as a long, grueling tournament of pure swiss and people from all over the world. It sounds more like a real grinder =P

sorry Ryan, even if it didn't happen, there would be accusation of team play. POP just doesn't need that kind of hassle. Plus the grinder clashes with the welcome party.

Just looking at the Eurovision results everyone hates the British! LOL
