Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Ideas that PUI could consider for next year...

I personally love the idea of a judges seminar and would gladly attend and what better place to hold it than nationals or worlds (where the best of the best gather) I know I have much to learn from the other premier judges in this game and I may have a little insight for them:biggrin:

The Judge training sounds like a winner. Train your Judges that go to Nats / Worlds, those Judges go back to their local areas and pass on their knowledge.

Bring back the Master Professor level for those that are trained at the major events and train the local Staff.

Maybe not this year, but I definitely remember the 15+ receiving less invites and prize support than the junior or senior division in the past while simultaneously exhibiting the largest numbers.

I remember when all the juniors at the grinder got into worlds while the 15+ had a strict undefeated-only top8 get invites (2005?) and I also remember juniors getting more invites from nationals in either 2005 or 2006.

There's definitely an age bias in the game, or there at least was.

There was no age bias at that particular worlds event. All the juniors got in because there were lots of open seats.

'Bias' suggests to me that groups that should be treated equally aren't. So who is the target market for sales? There is no bias when you are favouring your consumers over a different demographic that does not buy your product. If you want examples of bias you should perhaps consider how the 15+ is favoured by being supported by all the sales from the 10-.

Why am I arguing this way? Because perspective and assumption is key to if you see any age group being treated fairly or not. Not just age groups, but location, parental income, language, GDP etc.. Someones grass is always greener.

OP is very different from sales... favoring the juniors when in OP they make up a vastly smaller population doesn't seem right. It's not like doing so will increase sales.

once you stray away from physics and mathematics you can just about "prove" anything using numbers.

OP is supported out of the profits from sales.
OP is a marketting tool. (one of many)

Nationals is held at a big gaming convention in part because POP have to show the game off to potential customers.

To all those Americans who whine about the POSSIBILITY of paying $5 for an event, given the "high" gas Prices:

SHUT. UP.

In Holland, we pay €5 (Thats nearing 10 dollars) for EVERY event, even if its only 3 rounds of play. Then, our gas prices are THRICE that of you.

Still, if I were to go to an event thats, lets say, 90 minutes of train travel, guess what I pay? More then I would as I would in America while driving a car, let me assure you.

Jimmy please elaborate on the long down time for in store events. Don't store owners get to run pre-releases? Or are they restricted? The premiere event schedule seems to run for 9/10 months of the year.

The USA does not need rating based invites. But I believe that the rest of the world does. I'm not too sure that the USA would be happy if other countries could earn invites through consistant tournament play whilst USA based players could not.

Paying for events. FREE is a phenomenally powerfull incentive. FREE is worth more than the $5 proposal that keeps being mentioned. I wish I didn't have to charge for events but I have overheads. I'd love to offer Free events - I did once as a trial to see if sales increased. I'm not going to repeat the experiment any time soon :( .

Because I have costs I have an entrance fee (typically $10) any excess after costs pays for prizes for everyone on top of anything that POP provide. Noone goes away empty handed if I can possibly avoid it. Not free but the best value for money I can achieve.

Obsessing over ratings: there is a mass hysteria effect. Don't give in to the hysteria even though the fear is understandable. Ignoring any technical failings it is always uncomfortable to be uncertain of the future.

"Scrap ratings points at Nationals". This is an interesting idea. It would be consistant with making Nationals the big fun show for all and not just another stepping stone to worlds. Scrapping ratings at Nationals may be going too far but I could imagine the K value being reduced. Possibly to less than a Regional.

It probably varies by region but in our area there are a TON of masters, a good number of juniors, but only a few seniors. It's pretty common for some of the smaller events to only have 3 seniors at best. In that age range if you literally show up you will probably win something.

That's where the discrimination against masters is. It's about numbers. Sure the top 3 in all age ranges get prizes ... but if you have 26 masters, 14 juniors, and 3 seniors it's obviously harder for any given masters player to place in the top 3 of their age range while it's easier for the others. I'm not suggesting that this be changed, but the numbers clearly are against the masters when it comes to prize support.

On the flip side pizes like packs seem to mean a lot more to the younger folks. Whenever my junior aged sons win stuff the LOVE it! Me ... I like it but that's not why I play & it wouldn't affect me much if I got less.

You are correct it does vary: I have more juniors than masters.. So the discrimination is against the Juniors. The masters is not always the biggest group. Beware NUmBers THEY LIE!

Focussing on stuff instead of fun and enjoyment will be bad for the future of the game. Giving all the stuff, or oportunity to get stuff, to a small select band will be bad for the future of the game.

I really enjoy taking my kids to league & they nearly always have great fun. I get to talk to parents and the store folks and generally enjoy myself as well. However my league is a terrible place to test decks. It's fairly rare that I see other adults or even teenage masters players there who play in the competitive events. Pretty much any time I take an even halfway competitive deck I end up crushing anyone I play. I've usually end up take a barely tweaked theme decks to league just so the new folks & casual will not feel so overwhelmed. Love the theory behind leagues, and I'm also sure that some places probably do have leagues that would work like you describe, but it's simply not like that everywhere.

Yeah it is fun to go, but for deck testing forget it. The only time I got to test a deck is when you were there the same time.

Don't forget that the POP cards are crap also, that really encourages players to go to league.

Heh! I wondered if you would see that post. lol! You and your daughter are great and I'm always happy to see you guys there!

POP 5 was amazing. Boost, DRE, Mew δ, Rare Candy, etc. But POP 6 & 7 have been beyond bad. So yeah, not much incentive there recently. That's one thing that could be changed. Make the POP cards meaningful.

Yeah, POP5 was amazing. The only thing that was bad was that mew d was released, and around regionals last year few people could get their hands on it- making those who had money or lots of cards the people who would actually use it at that tournament.

But I definitely think there should be good cards in the POP packs. Staple cards or at least uncommon/common good cards.

right now would be the perfect time to catch up with japan's format. It will prolly be dp-on next format, but the format after should stay as dp-on and keep the dp sets for an extra season.

Excuse me! Are you saying that I am a bad judge or I don't know what I'm doing just because I can't afford to travel to Worlds or Nationals??? And just because a judge was at Worlds or Nationals doesn't make them superior either! I've heard about rulings that were made by a judge at Nationals that were extremely biased and also VERY WRONG! So maybe next time you should think and do your research before making blanket statements like this one!

I don't think Blizzard meant any disrespect to the judges that aren't able to attend nationals or worlds.

I like the idea of a judges seminar too. I think stuff like that can improve the game through other pathways.

cc, as they say...simmer down now....

Noone is claiming that the only good judges are nationals and worlds judges.

What seems to be requested here is some type of system, training and recognition for judges that are, or strive to be superior judges.

That is a system that I hope is being worked on, and will benefit the community as a whole.

I agree, some of the best judges are not nats judges, or worlds judges, as they have just not gotten the exposure or publicity for whatever reason.

I have one judge in my area who has NEVER judged a nats or worlds, and I would put him toe to toe with any judge in the country...Ditto.

He still thinks he is a player  (no offense Mikey)

The problem is, who trains the trainers? I can list on two hands the number of people I feel are able to do this from the outset.

PTO's? There are some PTOs who do not know the game as well as their judges, or most of their players. The need for a program, and the implimentation of the program are two different problems.

Talk to you soon.

Vince
