Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Ideas that PUI could consider for next year...

Here is a suggestion, at larger tournament (Regionals and Up) why doesn't pokemon sell space to Vendors. The vendors could pay POP directly and there is always kids looking for cards to finish off decks not to mention little kids buying packs it is a win win situtaion for everyone. POP could then use the money to maybe include a few more scholarships/packs.

Wow some of you guys are really selfish and are making me embarrassed to be in the 15+ age group.

"Over-catering" to the 10-?
JEEZ. You guys want to take away for children just because the 15+ have higher attendance? You guys feel entitled to more prizes because the 15+ have higher attendance than the 10-? If PUI wants to give them more than I'm all for it! Who cares about attendance, this game ids for THEM. You guys were making nice arguments and discussions but it went all down the toilet when those kinds of posts started appearing.
Honestly, listen to yourselves.

Anyway personally I'd like to see the regionals with invites. The paying for a tournament isn't so bad if it'll increase the prize/prizes but I think 5$ is a little steep... 1-2$, maybe even 3$, but 5 is a little much. And yes, ONLY for Masters and only for the bigger tourneys, not BRs, Citys

Excuse me! Are you saying that I am a bad judge or I don't know what I'm doing just because I can't afford to travel to Worlds or Nationals??? And just because a judge was at Worlds or Nationals doesn't make them superior either! I've heard about rulings that were made by a judge at Nationals that were extremely biased and also VERY WRONG! So maybe next time you should think and do your research before making blanket statements like this one!

Let me rephrase Blizz's comment for a moment. I think everyone here recognizes that TC is the rules team for Pokemon. Most, if not all of their staff has been staff at Worlds and Nats. From the rest of the judge pool, PUI SELECTS those that they have either witnessed in person when they travel to Regionals and/or from feedback and recommendations from previous Worlds and Nats staff. The staffs may not be the all time best, but you have to admit they are pretty darn good!

Have mistakes been made on rulings at Nats and Worlds? Yes, unfortunately, because the judges are HUMAN and some rulings are not black and white. If all the card interactions were cut and dried, we wouldnt have a need for TC and ATMs.

Just bc you have not been asked to staff one of these events does not mean you arent qualified. There are only so many slots available.

What is being stated is this.....many GOOD judges are @ Nats. Why not use this time when many judges from all across the USA are gathered in ONE place to get a system in place to take back home and to then SPREAD the word and IMPROVE Judging everywhere and to enhance CONSISTENCY.

I'm sorry if my statement offended you that what not my point. I meant that there is no better time to (pick another judges brain) than Nationals or Worlds(there more of us under one roof than any other PUI event.) Did my statement mean that if you were not there then you weren't good. No, I realize than are like 8 million reasons why someone wouldn't be able to go to both let alone one of these events. I've payed my way before and know the costs fortunately for me PUI has given me a payed trip this year. Does that make me better than anyone? Sorry no my ego isn't that large I know it just makes me luckier than most.

Wow, a lot of pretty heated discussion. Here are my thoughts
1) Free play is a good thing for the growth of this game PERIOD.
2) In regards to prize support, I think POP has moved away from spreading the wealth down to giving all the prizes to the top places. I see no reason why the top couple places at regionals should not get scholarships, or even travel awards. If you spend all day in a 200+ regional just to end in t8 and walk away with...a few packs?
3) There seems to be a lot of griping about rankings. A few years ago we were all dying with a way to reward consistent players, now everybody seems generally angry about them. I also think everybody greatly overexaggerates how rankings have made the game no fun at all, why are you still playing then?
4) Getting rid of worlds actually sounded like a nice idea, more emphasis could be placed on other events, but that will never happen. Worlds is a great PR event for POP let alone for releasing more product (the worlds decks.) I think more emphasis definitely needs to be placed on US nationals, as other have said, Americans have become spoiled and believe they deserve to be at worlds every single year. I hate the fact that nationals has remained at origins despite the fact that it could EASILY be a stand alone event. This is probably seen as more cost effective to the higher ups at POP to remain with origins and I'm sure they have discussed it at length.

So about these rankings again, they seem to be making everyone gripe a bit, and I personally belive any system that encourages players to sit out as oppose to playing is a bad system. Heres a thought, instead of getting rid of them, (because we all love rewarding consistent players don't we?) why not just make the ratings invisible? Players would not be able to tell who is "safe" at nationals, and nobody would want to sit out. After nationals, a few players would be revealed as the highest ranked and get a nice surprise.

Alternatively, besides rankings what could POP do to reward consistent players? I've heard mike say again and again that pokemon will never see a system like pro tour points instituted, but I have to say, pro tour points would be pretty cool.

One more thing in relation to # events per year, Vince you are grossly wrong in your estimate of 7. First of all, only PTO's have access to Prereleases, which tend to have lower attendance than regular events anyways. This leaves 3 events, not 7. I think we definitely need to see a summer battle road series put into place to accompany spring and fall, perhaps even smaller events during state and regionals avalible to smaller store owners.

There really needs to be done more in the Summer. June, July, August, September, thats 4 months that there's virtually NOTHING here in The Netherlands. I know that given the fact that lots of people enjoy holidays in between (including TO's and judges) the attendance wont be as high, but it'd still be nice to do I'd think.

how does POP 'already discriminate' against masters? aren't prizes equal across the board?

and don't forgot 15+ didn't even HAVE OP under wotc...

'mom

I can't, and won't speak on behalf of other people or countries, but I know for a fact that POP/PUI have done an amazing job for our country in terms of Organized Play.

For those who attended Worlds last year (2007), if you remember the video that was shown in the opening ceremony, I had absolutely no doubt that those numbers were in fact the truth.

No system is perfect, and therefore POP naturally would have some issues. But, as far as I'm concerned, they are doing an excellent job with the important/main things, so why pick on the smaller/minor issues?

The issue about age discrimination is, imo, enivitable.
As the quote above suggests, prizes are equal accross the board, at least for large international events, mainly worlds in particular. The current 'splitting' of the age groups is imo the best way to do it. If any age group had more/less prizes, I can say for sure that even more people would complain about this. Having prizes equal is ideal.

Lets face it, especially in most international events, 10- is a much smaller age group in terms of attendance. One of the main reasons imo is because of the fact that they generally can't travel themselves to events (i.e. bus), and also are much less likely to find out about events - such as online, by themselves. Remember this is a general statement, so I don't need replies from people going "oh but my son regularly catches the bus...." yawn... =/

This is no one's fault! Like I said already, if 15+ (or any other age group) was rewarded more, that would be even more criticized...

Why criticize POP?

IMO, card shops with tables and space to hold tourneys should TRACK DOWN their local/region PTO and recruit THEM to use their places for events. Too many times, it is the other way around with PTOs hunting down locations to hold their events. I would LOVE to have a card store in my local area. There is a comic store, but no gaming in there. Our league is in a BAM, but not enough table and space to hold events in there, just enough room (barely) to have weekly league.

My other location in Cleveland TN is a card store with other gaming there. Since they have let us in a year ago, we have held 6 events there (every other month). 4 PRs and 1 CC and 1 BR (couldnt do a spring BR this yr due to my schedule, NOT the store's schedule.) The store likes us being there bc it increases the foot traffic in their store that day and they sell more product.

A store owner doesnt have to be a PTO.....they just need to talk to the PTO in the area and work together with them! That way, they will get 6-7 events a year in that store!

I actually had a point to make here, I guess I should have made it instead of nibbling on the edge.
It seems the game has no problem bringing in the youngsters, and probably does an ok job keeping
them. But maybe they are over-catering to the little ones. What more can be done to make the game
'cooler' for 12-15 year olds so that more will choose to start Pokemon instead of that Other Game?

Does anyone else see the problem here yet? :

http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=73519

The fact that anyone 12 - 15 underplays their involvement in the game is a problem. I know Jimmy
asked for ideas, prolly real, tangible ideas to help the game and even offered a few of his own. I just
started league and this is the problem I see. Unfortunately, I don't have any real solutions that can
be implemented. Anyone?

The awesome thing is, ideas that are shared on these forums do really seem to make a difference.
The best example that gives me this idea was:

http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=23203

Where the following year, POP seemed to have come up with the ideal solution. That is, based on the year which participants are born.

I'm not implying in anyway that the users are -responsible- for the eventual solution, I'm just trying to make a point.

Come up with a great idea, let it be heard, and you never know.

Maybe for Auto-loss's in top cut you could have a 10-15 card side deck, that you switch cards out for inbetween games.

Adam, I am DEAD SPOT ON on my estimate of events.

It is not hard to track down a PTO who will sponsor your events.

Heck, I even know of a PTO is St. Louis currently sponsoring events for a creator of this thread, until the PTO issue can be worked out! It took the Memphis PTO over a year of sponsorship to go from TO to PTO.

Once again, you are showing your lack of knowledge in your response.

You show me a store that needs a prerelease, I will show you a store that needs to contact a PTO to coordinate with them!

No, the store is not going to run the event themselves, esp without a history of running Pokemon events, but after several successful events, and a good track record, they will, most likely, be put on to the PTO system and get their own events.

I commend PUI for not handing these out like candy. Too many people work far too hard for this game for it to be cheapened.

toxictaipan, you haven't recieved your recent player rewards either? I thought I was the only one.

My Brother did, we live in the same house. I don't get it!

My mom didn't get her rewards either!! And yes, my mom plays too. My mom is cool!!

I know it's just POP7, but still, I earned them!

I only started in January so I don't know how things used to be, or even what the system in Japan is like, but I wouldn't mind seeing more Cities. As far as I know, there was only one in Oregon (though I could easily be completely wrong -- don't quote me), and if you couldn't get there then you were stuck. (This was actually only a sticking point for me because I discovered that they give out special "City Championships"-stamped cards there, and I collect as well as play.) It makes sense to me to only have a single State and a single Regional, but it would be nice to have more premier events to raise ratings, practice, and the like.
Also, I know this is absolutely not POP's fault, but it seems that events always start 10-30 minutes late, and the organizer always underestimates the expected turnout by about 20%.

I would like POP to consider to giving out two economy class tickets for those who finished first and second in Regionals instead of just one FIRST CLASS plane ticket to the winner (at least that's the case for the Canadian East Regionals according to Matt, whether he is pulling my leg is another matter). And as the 2nd place finisher for said Regionals, I am not sure what insults me more ... not having a plane ticket to Vancouver or giving the winner a first class ticket when the money used for that can be better distributed due to the cost of said ticket.

PS. No, this isn't sour grapes since I will be flying out to Vancouver anyways. However, with the price of a single first class ticket one could buy two economy class tickets and perhaps other neat prizes as well ...
