Pokemon = socially unacceptable?

Marril I’m going to take a bit of umbrage at your comments about DnD.

Okay. You do that. It doesn't change that there are better RPGs out there to play. It has nothing to do with the stereotype of a D&D player and more to do with the fact that the game just isn't that stellar.

I don't go around advertising it (well, except for the fact that my phone number is in the League advertisements), but if someone inquires, I tell them without fear.

You can't be a closet dweller forever!

Heh. 5 years ago I would have agreed with you. Not today. I was very reluctant to play DnD a few years ago "when there were so many other better games out there" ... but fortunately I did. DnD 3.5 has come a LONG way from the game I played as a kid. It's not perfect, but then I've played enough systems to know that none of them are. The problem at this point is not the DnD system but the corporate management at this point IMHO.

Pffft. Everyone knows I play. I missed quite a bit of school last year and when people ask where I'm going I tell them. People think it's cool to win scholarship money, and most of them don't get to travel a whole lot, so that's cool too. I've had three girlfriends during high school and they've all known I play. People also think it's cool that I met my current girlfriend playing pokemon.

Honestly, even if you don't have prize money to brag about, who cares? People who haven't told their friends they play, answer this: do you really think your friends would stop being your friends if they knew? That's what I used to think back in like 7th grade but that's so wrong. Those people think you're cool anyway, and it's not like they're gonna find out you play pokemon and decide OMG GEEK EWW.

Why play if you're ashamed of it? I'm proud of everything I've done through this game. I'll tell people I have fun and I get to see friends and travel all over the country and sometimes pick up some scholarship money. I don't know anyone that thinks I'm a geek, and if they do I obviously don't talk to them enough for it to matter. Pokemon doesn't destroy your reputation and it's a **** of a lot better than doing nothing on weekends like a lot of people that would make fun of you so.

I've got it!
I know how to make Pokemon cool!
Put a pair of sun glasses on a Camerupt and give him a cigarette.
He'll be so cool, no one will be able to resist buying his products!

I told my girlfriend, I played Pokemon. She was like, "ohh thats cool, what are they paying you to play?" I left it at that.

Plays Pokemon and is good at it = Solid Cool

Plays Pokemon and is bad at it = Dork

That's pretty much how it works out in my experience.

this is such a good thread lol.

anyway, i think pokemon = uncool , is basically bacause of pichu and pikachu. They look too cute, and that makes 18+ teenagers (and adults, too) stay away from pokemon. Nintendo should promote more powerful, cooler pokemons to the public so that they would know pikachu isnt the only pokemon that exists.

As for mysel, i feel a little shame when i tell ppl i play and love pokemon. Perhaps i put too much time in it and adding in the fact that im bad at talking, now i dont have much friends. My parents, ah, mom doesnt really care, but dad says it's a bad way to waste money. If i buy like 5 boosters, he'll go like "***FF", u should buy better stuffs. What did he bought for himself? golfs, snacks, impractical things....

i wore my pokemon worlds shirt to processing today
a few people made comments, no one said anythig insulting
its all in ur head people

That is true my friend. I once worn a Pokemon worlds shirt, to a wrestling event called, Ring of Honor located at the Manhattan center, in the heart of NY City. What I am saying is, that this event is know for its "loud" and "hardcore" wrestling fans, and I did get some odd looks but no harsh comments, yeah I can agree with you.

The **** does it matter if it's socially acceptable? Teach your kid to be confident in what he/she/it does and it won't matter what it is.

Ive had people ask me before what one of my hobbies is, and I tell them I like to play Pokemon. Some friends have asked at school before, and I told them, no biggie. My whole family knows as well and my parents both congratulate me and are happy for me when I do good, like winning a free expense paid trip to San Diego Worlds in '05. You shouldn't be ashamed of playing Pokemon, especially if you're good at it and you know it. My good friend Chris a.k.a Mr. Raichu even has a sign on the front of his garage that says "POKÉMON PLACE" and if you ask me that's pretty cool.

I changed school last year and i really didn't want to tell the people that i played.
Some people saw my Pokemon stuff at home, and asked if i played.
Honestly, i didn't want to be called a geek already, so i just told them that i sold it, and made some pretty good money on it. They were like, "k, cool".
They did buy that for a some months, but then we (me and 3 of my friends) were out eating in the city, and a man from league came and talked to me. I just said "hi", and he got his food. He has a brain damage, and for some reason, they were sure i knew him from playing Pokemon.
So then we got back to the subject. They asked if I played, and i just said "yeah". They weren't sure if i was telling the truth, but still they were like, "k".

Long time after that, my girlfriend broke up with me, after a fight, 1 of my frinds moved to a school where you live (dunno what's it's called in english), and then my huge social life sort of stopped. Sure, i still have some friends, Pokemon buddies etc. but i like to be home more now.

I like gadgets (iPod, cool cellphone, expensive clothes etc.), and it kinda covers for the Pokemon thing. However, i wear Boss, Lacoste etc, and they don't, so it's not like i'm wearing what they're wearing. Of course i do wear some of the popular clothes, but i wear what i like. Not what they like.

I do also get the good grades, is the better one to about everything in school, i'm good at sports.
Some people do have some sour grapes about that, but still, when i help them, (and the opposite sometimes), we're ok friends. The girls like me friend-wise, so that's cool too.

Sometimes they start talking about Pokemon in school, and then the subject leads to me. I don't really care anymore, but neither do they.

So after all, it did and up in happiness. (in school)

Yeh i'm 13 only 3 of my friends play We Keep It Secret Coz We Dont Want Anyone To Know We

...........................DRAGON POKEMON RULE ^_^.................................................

I'm now attending DigiPen. From what I've gathered from orientation, the only really socially unacceptable thing at that school is not showering. In fact, we had several seniors and faculty drill this into our heads. xD Even playing D&D is only mildly socially unacceptable (Smash Bros. Club is a real club, no joke, while D&D is just a (few) guy(s) hanging out in the cafeteria who only calls it a club) as well as thinking FFVII is the best game ever. If I survive the workload, it should be quite interesting for the next few years.

Ask and ye shall recieve.

I'll redo it if someone can find me a bigger/better/higher quality image.

I'm 41, i play- and tell anyone who will listen. My surgeon calls me the"poke-monster" lol

If you play and enjoy it, be proud of it. Have self confidence and don't cave into peer
pressure. It IS a great card game!!

Here is a hint: if your friends give you crap over playing Pokemon they probally aren't
really friends.
