Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Sportsmanship Awards

I'd have to say that the awards were not given out well AT ALL. Seeing how at least one of them in each age group went to whoever placed HORRIBLY. Mike " I Can't Make T32, Must Tank For Prizes " P. intentionally laughed about how he was going to aim purely for the sportsmanship award because he lost his first three. Guess what? He got it. Now I'm all for this because Mikes my friend, and hes really cool and he got some really bad luck and I am glad he got stuff out of it, and hey, its all about cheating the system. I support what he did and would have done the same thing, so I don't want to sound like I am just trying to hose over Mike, but its too late to change stuff now anyways.

The ONLY way to accurately have done this is to have mentioned NOTHING and rewarded all the prizes afterwards.

Also, of course some people who were winning got the prize. The last prize in each age category was taken from top32, so naturally someone who did well HAD to get it.

I really don't care or anything as I got plenty of stuff, but I think the sportsmanship award was horribly flawed. Good intention, but gone about horribly. I'd seen plenty of players who did much better things than those who got the awards. ( TheAnswer ( AJ ) against Colin...Lord Ninetales in her game against me. Kevin from the Netherlands despite my last turn legal stalling to turn the game into a draw...) All of these did things which were more deserving than alot of the receipents.

I think for the next years Worlds a VERY simple idea should be implemented. I play in Heroclix tournaments all the time, and a Fellowship prize is awarded every tournaments. We have a few simple methods of deciding who gets it. One, the judge decides, aka, how Worlds went, which no one likes. Especially since judges should be busy RULING and JUDGING than trying to watch sportsmanship. Two GOOD ideas are to have everyone write down a vote for who they enjoyed playing the most that day out of all their opponents, and those who get the most votes win. That means it can't just be someone who did something nice for one player. You had to show kindless the entire day and really deserve it. Another good idea would be to put a spot on the score sheets. Have everyone rate their opponents 1-10 in terms of Sportsmanship, and at the end of the day, tally them all up and see which players got the highest scores. These are more legitimate ways to choose as they get the opinions of all the players, not just a judge who saw someone tank a game.

As a judge, it was difficult to see examples of sportsmanship.
If a game was going smoothly, you didn't get involved in it.
It was only when a game had a problem that you stepped it.

I like the idea of votes through out the day, on a match by match basis.
Sure, people will rate their friend "10", but over the entire tournament, a true picture will emerge.

The awards did succeed somewhat in their goal, though.
Whether people were "acting" sportsmanlike or really were sportsmanlike, it had the same effect: People acted with good sportsmanship throughout the tourament, for the most part, helping things run smoothly.

PokePop has a very good point. Whether it was honest sportsmanship or not, it may the day more enjoyable and gave off a great feel to the weekend and that alone is worth it. I'd like to see the match by match voting, so if Nintendo is listening, feel free to use it...or at least consider it.

PUI didn't HAVE to give out any FREE product for a year to ANYBODY. Be glad that they do this :) Be glad for anyone who gets extra FREE product. Next year, I hope they have 8 good sportsmanship awards per age group!! Whine tooo much and PUI might not bring this award back at all :)
