I started playing back when the EX series was released so I don't really know what it was like before. I think the format was like Skyridge or something on. I really liked the EX series because cards were not over powered and if they were, an effort was made to make solid counters.
In the last format, we had the most skillsack format I've ever played it. We had donks out of the water, decks hitting for 90 with no energy, Expert Belt is just broken, decks with power pokes with no real strategy or synergy like Luxchomp and only a few playable deck. I think that format was not a good first impression for the new players of the game because of how the format was. This format is like a triangle. 3 decks are in the center.
Vilegar
Luxchomp
G-Dos
These decks center it, then everything else like other SP decks. I for one like HGSS on but I'm seeing another problem though. All the decks now use the same trainers. I'm looking at my 4 other decks and and they all use the same trainers. Sure there are going to be staples and people will use them. You know, Rare Candy is like Mirror Force to Yugioh.
The last format was a lot like that. In the EX series, we had tons of different trainer. Sure the staples were used but we had Pokemon Tools, Stadiums, TMs, Engines that any deck could use, Supporters not everyone could use and some cards that would not work on some Pokemon. Looking into HGSS on, we have no real stadiums, pokemon tools or unique trainers.
I was something like Power Tree or Giant Stump, maybe even Full Flame. I want Windstorm and Lure Ball. I also want Steven's Advice. I like it better when not all decks were using the same trainers but want some more unique cards. Crystal Shard would have been amazing against Luxchomp decks. A Stadium like Holon Circle could help wall some decks. Now we have 4 Stadium cards and Lost World is the only real playable one.
I just want to know what you guys think about it. I'm glad to see the return of Energy Retrieval and Revive so the game is taking a step in the right direction. I do hope we don't get Pokemon Catcher to help maintain the health of the game but I'd like to see some more counters.
Make BW on counters for HGSS on cards. Maybe print a card that says Abilities or any other effects so things like Vileplume can't camp on the bench in a format where everything will target Abilities. Who's to know, we still have more sets coming out in the future so we could be seeing some more unique cards and maybe some counters or hard counters. They did a great job with Battle Tower and Space Center. Just saying.
