Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Werewolf XVII C: Training Tribulation. Wolf Victory. EPILOGUE posted!

Study sounds good. In the meantime, all you werewolf players should help me flesh out the skinnier sections of the guide. If you feel something is missing or needs clarification, PITCH IN.

Since you asked, Cabd, I think there should be something said for being a meat shield. Namely (and especially if you're a clear townie), if there are no more protection roles in the game, there's still some form of vig/investigative role and you're a VT, make it so the wolves have to kill you. Claim seer, badly breadcrumb priest, whatever. If you're clear, nobody town should question you. If you're not clear, this would be harder. Just playing aggressive pro-town might be enough, or breadcrumb that you're a power role, but don't claim priest if priest is around, or seer if there's still a seer. Basically, don't do something that'll get the very people you're trying to protect for one night to out themselves because you're trying to be the wolf kill.

Looking forward to joining the next game. Excellent guide also cabd, reading through it has helped me look back at games I've played on other sites and see what I did wrong.

KK, I believe he means "SS7 was a wolf in the previous game. He made a list of people who he said he felt should be watched/seered, and in order the first three were town, the fourth was a wolf, and the fifth was a town. The fourth person never got seered."

I'd like to claim credit for that little trick :p

SS7 and I were discussing wolf tricks and how to seed safety for wolves in a non-obvious and unlikely to be seered way.

List of odd numbered people.
Don't put the wolf first or last nor middle. Most likely to be seered.

Don't put in top part of list as if the seer decides to sequential you are doomed.

Instead put in the bottom half.

:p

Truth. Ikrit deserves credit for this tactic.

Do you mean seed as in the order on the signup page?

Playing as the Vigilante

You, fine player, have drawn quite the role card. You're the town's Vigilante. This means that you are the wild card that can make or break the game. Your choices at night can single-handedly win or lose the game for the town. So think carefully.

Sometimes, the Only Winning Move...
Is not to play. Unless your role card tells you that you MUST pick a target every night, it is better to not make a night kill if you have no scum reads. The last thing you want to do is go killing a string of town-aligned players, giving the wolves their win twice as fast.

The Voices are Telling you to Hide Your Guns
Sometimes, during the day, a player will suggest that the Vig target a specific player. It's best to ignore any requests from other players unless their alignment has been confirmed, and even then, it's not assured to be correct. Similarly, NEVER confirm or deny that there is a Vigilante in the game, unless it means your survival. The wolves want you dead, but more importantly, they want to know if there is a Vig or not. That way they can make plans, ploys to mislead said Vig into shooting townspeople, etc.

Stick to Your Guns
If you mess up and hit a townie, don't take that to mean you should never use your role again. Everyone makes mistakes. Don't be over-eager in using your role, but at the same time, don't be afraid of using it. If you have a solid read, you probably should go for it. You never know. If the game is nearing LyLo, your odds are pretty darn good anyways, so if you have a solid read and more than 40% of the remaining players are scum, shoot away.

I'd add:

Trust your Instincts

It is very useful, and a counterpart to your third hint. However, only utilize it if you are good with your reads.

I'd use WW IX as the example. I played a Vig in Absol's first game. D1 two players got a few votes, but people eventually chose one of them to be lynched. Right at the deadline another player flopped on the lynch target with a "Unvote/Vote X" post. That player was lynched and was a wolf.

I followed my instincts and killed the flopper, who also flipped wolf. 2 Wolves down after 2 Cycles.

If you can read players and are pretty consistent with your read accuracy, use it. Don't listen to what other people say, as wolves won't point to wolves, and townies can be wrong. (See KP/I_S) Follow your own thoughts and your own logic.

Part Eleven: Playing as the Role Blocker

Congrats. You've drawn the Role Blocker role. Your actions at night get to steer the course of other power roles quite interestingly. You have the power to deny any given player the use of his or her role. It's a power that should not be taken likely nor under-estimated. This guide assumes you're the town-aligned role blocker. The wolf kind does exist, so be aware of that.

Holster your Weapon There, Tex
The first few days, if you have no read on scum, it is absolutely best to NOT use your role. The worst thing for the town would be getting no result from the seer, and or the doctor's protection not even working. Guess what your role has a chance of doing if you randomly target somebody? Let's say there's 20 players, 3 other town roles, and a wolf killer. You have a 1/19 chance of blocking the kill if you randomly target, but you have a 3/19 chance of causing harm to the town. See the issue?

Get Used to Reading
You should ISO your planned target before submitting your role. Check specifically for role breadcrumbs. You don't want to be hitting your own doctor or seer with a role block, now do you?

With Great Power...
Comes the responsibility to use it as the wolves take an upper hand. Remember that if the town is approaching LyLo, and the Seer or Doc is dead, your role is probably the closest thing the town has to a seer-like role. Let's say 8 townies are dead, leaving it at 5 wolf and 7 town remaining going into the night. Here, instead of a 1/19 chance of stopping the kill, you have a 1/11 chance, and if you stop the kill, you've just gained a for sure scum lynch.

Hide Thyself, Mortal
If it's night one or two, and you used your role, don't reveal even if the kill is stopped. You have no idea who the doctor protected, and if the town has any bulletproof players. For all you know, there's a bulletproof serial killer that took the hit. Remember, unless you can be 100% certain that your action and not the doctor's stopped the kill, revealing is a free power role for the wolves.

Part Twelve: So You Want to Make/Host
Your Own Game

Well well, somebody had werewolf fever. It's fine, we all have dreams of hosting the most awesome game ever. There's a lot of things you need to do before you can host your own game. Here's a set of the bare minimum requirements.

Register to Moderate
Both Pokegym and SixPrizes have a standards body that maintains the roster of Werewolf games and controls their time slots. For Pokegym, that is the thread maintained by SandSlash7 and Ikrit, the modern Werewolf Compendium. For Sixprizes, it can be found in the thread "Forum Games Schedule" ran by Cabd. Either way, you need to get approved for a slot before you can run a game on either site. Don't show up to the party without an invite, or you'll end up unwelcome.

Flavor Comes Last
A lot of players will jump in headfirst and match roles to the types of character likely to possess those. For example, making Ghestis an Alpha Wolf that can roleblock. While that's great and everything, you should complete your setup before even choosing a theme to go to your game.

Make it Fair
Ask yourself: "If I was a player and got one of these roles, would I have been satisfied my team had an even shot of winning once the game was over and I had seen the other players' roles?" If you have to hesitate for even a second before saying yes, then you need to re-evaluate your setup. Remember that you are aiming to give the wolves a 50% chance of winning. Giving the town too many power roles is bad. The same goes for the wolves, don't give them something stupidly broken like a roleblocker and a busdriver and a rolecop. That creates too many crazy scenarios.

Simplicity is Your Friend
The more "clean" your roles are, the better it is for the game. Keep your role cards simple. Remember, less is more. Be specific, though. If the Doctor only prevents one night kill, then state that. If it prevents all kills, state that too. Also specify if a role is mandatory.

Plan Your Game Size
What size of game are you going to run, exactly? The most common ones are 16-player and 20 player, although larger games have happened in the past.

Know Your Experience Level
If you're modding for your first or second time, then don't go trying to add in brand new game mechanics. Stick to the proven stuff until you get some experience.

Get Your Setup Verified
You will want somebody who has modded before to look your setup over and give you feedback. However, any player who has seen your setup can no longer play in your game. Therefore, it is advisable to go to the opposite website of the one you're running the game on, and ask one of the players that plays only on that website to take a look for you. You can find a list of players that are site-specific within the standards bodies threads on each site.

Random.org is the Only Fair Way to Assign Roles
Seriously. Don't place players in roles because you think they'd play a certain role in a way you enjoy. The only fair way to do it is to place all roles and player names into Random.org and let it spit out your assignments.

Keep Track of Your Thread
Aim to do a vote count at least every 24 hours. Aim for more if there's a lot of voting activity. A great way to manage your vote counts is this online tool:
http://www.wundervoll.us/mafiaphp/

Stay Nuetral
Don't take sides. If you feel like there's an issue with your game, reach out to a regular player that is not in the game. Asking a person from either faction will give you a biased answer.

Don't Be Afraid to Team Up
Mods work best in pairs. That way there's always somebody able to cover.

Give Your Scum Team a Safe Area
Make sure whatever you use to allow the scum team to communicate is a safe area, nobody else should be able to see it. The same applies to masons, if any, in your game. Usually, QuickTopic is used for pokegym games, and the built in Convo feature is used for games on sixprizes.

Don't Forget Your Dead Players
This is something of a personal thing with me, but I have never liked it when mods simply ignore the existence of their dead players. Instead, it is best for you to create a "Team Dead Guys" quicktopic (gym) or convo (6P) That allows the players that have been removed from the game to interact with the mod, and be an "active spectator" of the ongoing thread.

Its coming...

I like your things that you put in the "So you want to host your own game"

Very concise. I don't think I can add anything to it other than random specifics. As a baseline its great.

Thank you, Cabd! This means a lot to me to be able to read this here and now. :thumb:

Jewelquest, you're up first.

JQ, you grew a LOT since the game where you and I went after each other (absol's replacement game)

However, like I said before, you made several major mistakes. Commenting about the night results was a primary mistake, as was how much you fence sat. Fence sitting is good if you do it once or twice, but doing it literally every available opportunity gave us plenty of leeway to go after you lategame. Your calm collected style was a good thing. I just managed to arrange a quickhammer against you before you could reply. For the record, my analsysi of you was actually fairly truthful. Many of your actions WERE scumtells, you just didn't know you were making them.

Thank you.

After reading your scumtell section, I do realize that I really have been doing a lot of them. Which isn't good for the town. Which means that I need to do better in future games that I play as town.

I am glad to see that my style has improved, and hopefully it will improve. I hadn't realized before now the true importance of taking notes. Starting next game, I am going to begin to take detailed notes on the days.

I'd love for you to add those random specifics. I know I'm missing a few tells and terms, so those sections are priority. If anyone notices a typo or mistake, please post to bring it to my attention, as well. Since SS7 went ahead and linked the pokegym version on his thread, I feel like I owe it to you guys to keep it updated.

You're welcome. I was worried you were gone or something, as you hadn't commented in quite a while. But yeah, looking back at any game, you can always find that you did some stuff wrong. But now you know, right?
