This is the continuing thread of European Play as the last thread reached over 25 pages!

That thread has now been moved to the Legendary Posts section - well done, everyone.

I'll start things by saying having reflected on Amsterdam's Stadium Challenge and some of the responses I've received to my points, I don't think I'm being selfish at all in demanding that the older players do not get as raw a deal in the future as we received in the form of the Prof Event there. Whether we should have a Prof event before Worlds 2002, is open to question although I don't see why WotC-Europe should have to pay for such a thing if it's only going to keep maybe 30 people in Europe happy. It would be nice though to have an easier way of playing on the global scale. And for what was the only 15+ tournament in Europe this year to date, it wasn't treated as serious at all by the TO, who wasn't even present during the rounds. We didn't even get told what our final standings were, he just got the top 8 to seat around a table and that was it, goodbye and push off everyone else.

From 14 events last year everything boiled down to one. As an older player I had high expectations for this event, I had been looking forward to for so long. My own personal progress in the event has got nothing to do with its downfalls. That said, if Peter Coenen has anything to do with judging future Pokémon events I would recommend people to just steer clear and save their money. I'm sorry but it was disgusting to see all that went wrong under his charge, without him doing anything about it.

[EDITED]

I don't like to be sworn at by judges. And I don't like to be recommended by WotC-staff to play Magic. I don't like to have promises broken. And I don't like to read things on the internet and then expect events to happen which don't, and then be called I'm wrong about my facts.

Things seem to have been forgotten very quickly after Amsterdam, and not much is there to look forward to in the future for European Play if we just get more of the same. Why have Croatia and Israel now been given GCs, when Sweden was cancelled and forgotten about? Israel isn't even in Europe!

Some people are just forgetting what we've fought for so long here in Europe.

[EDITED]

It's a game, after all. [Roll Eyes]

that is correct.

remember people, before this gets out of hand, pokemon is a CARD GAME

i like pokemon as much as the next bloke (or madam) but you must remeber that you play with nothing but glossy peices of cards.

i know there is alot at stake at these competitions, and i know the stress put upon people by thier family and friends to preform well in main events, i have been there before, but if you carrie on this argument it will make you bitter with each other. Bitter to the point of resentment. Resentment not only of thoose you call your friends, but resentment of the cards you all use so well.

I know this. When I was one win away from an america trip in the STSQT in thorpe park last september, and the boy i was against made a mistake that allowed him to win the game (that was accctually not allowed, but the judge knew no better), i went home and felt so angry and cheated upon, i nearly threw it all away.

I realised that no one can be perfect, and in situations of extreme pressure and nerves, mistakes are meade, not only on behalf of the players, but the judges too.

There was a reason i did not give up however.

There was a judge there, while i was in a side event we talked about how i had never been abroad before in my life, and i wanted to win this for the experience more than the rankings and ratings.

She believed in me, and told me that if i kept trying, i would achieve my goal. one day i may, but that is another story.

I cannot remember he name, damn my bad memory, but i think it began with either se or ce, and she gave me her gym leader t-shirt.

I think this was symbolic of the faith she had in me and she knew i could carry on to be a good player.

the point of this is not to be angry at one another, your selves, or the organisers, but to realise what you did wrong and improve upon it untill sucess is yours.

Like golduck.

he had a minor accident, but apart from that, after all the trips he has won, i believe that he does not feel pitty in himself when he losses, just dusts himself off and trys again.

I kow he made a mistake, and maybe he should have had a greater penalty, that is not for me to decide, but as a teacher said to me
"The embarrasment that comes from one mistake, Sticks in your mind, ensuring that it will not happen again"

Well, that is my opinion, and if anyone knows of the judge i am talking about here, tell her phil sed HIIIIIIIIIII [Smile]

thanks

Mazzy I'm amazed how well you put this. I've been thinking about posting something like this all day....but I could never have put it in so great words as you just did.

Very well spoken.

I just hope that both Golduck and Stoney will continue to be here, post and play the game. They are both very nice young men even if I have only met Goldie IRL.

But that's also what they are. YOUNG. They are both at a delicate age. They don't need this kind of treatment from an adult that is also a teacher as a profession. You really should know better Freddy.

I hope this is enough of this and that only nice words can come from Slough in the future.

Mazzy, I know how that feels and totally agree with you...you should _NEVER_ give up! I've been to 4 mayot events now in Europe and I've made top 8 in all of them...2nd place twice -_- and I keep losing to people I know well (except Evens). Yes, its frustrating but I wont give up yet...next time I encounter Eskil in a tournament I will literally gut his pokemon into pieces =\ Well its a game and theres always a bad side of a game...sadly tho I've only tasted the bad side...

Anyway all of you talking crap about freddy should think a little...Im on his side. The event was very dissapointing and I looked forward to this event as a big and fun event, but god I got screwed [Frown]

I have been thinking.

Pokemon is a game for friends.

I read somewhere that more toys in Europe have been sold with both Ash and pikachu, where as in japan, they only buy pikachu accessories.

The fact that even children not more than the age of eight can recognise that friendship is an important aspect of life within our nation(s) somewhat degrades the who 'good' feeling of pokemon when fully grown adults and teenagers fight a battle that cannot be won.

Incase you dont understand, this is a post of of remorse. A remorse that is not mine. I think fighting will not solve who goes where, only in our apologies can we really progress.

This is why i ask you, not as a card player, not as trader but as a friend, to come clean and apologise to those that you have treated a little dis respectfully.
For if you cannot apologize, and accept apologies alike, then i am personally sorry.

I am sorry that you will live you life with a cold heart. I know someone who cannot apologise, my father, and i can tell you, you will not be respected, you will not be trusted, and youwill most of all never be considered a friend.

I hope that you can all find it within yourselfs to appeal to this post and not stay at arms with each other, yet greet each other with open arms,

Remeber, the future of pokemon, and your lives, rely on frienship
thanks again,

mazzy

It has something to do with your treatment towards Stoney, and also Peter Coenen. You need to be careful what you say, Freddy, if not you'll end up hurting people's feelings. Some things you've said about some of us after and during the event are not very nice. Even if we all might have done wrong things.

And if you didn't know it, we did play best out of 3 in the final. I lost the first game, won the second one, and the mistake happened in the last one.

My opponent was playing Donphan, Dark Donphan, Gligar and many other Grass Weakness Pokémon. Even without that Croconaw, I'd had a very good chance of winning. I had a fully loaded Bayleef at the end of the game, which drew half of my prizes by knocking out Pokémon with Double Razor Leaf.

I can understand you didn't mean to cheat, but I can't understand why you, like Stoney, felt winning was the most important thing. You want to discuss it with me, you know my AIM.

Yes please keep it civil (i.e. no more slams against other board members!

Just a note: It really is the responsibilty of both players to ensure an Attacking Pokémon is fully powered up with the correct type of energy. The cards are all laying out in the open so it's not a secret of what is attached to what.

New topic 'Post Amsterdam' ... the first step of a new big Pokemon evolution in Europe [Wink]

Mazzy, your post is great, nothing else to say !

Friends, Pokemon friends ... I consider Golduck as a friend, and I know he's the kind of guy who'll never cheat during a game. He's a great player and is really involved in the game and the European community (who is behind Team Europe ???). Instead of accusing him, we would better thank him for all he has done for European players and congratulate him for his tournament in Amsterdam. The mistake was not seen by a lot of people (opponent, judge, professors, ...), and it was just a mistake.

I also consider Freddy as a friend. Sometimes we don't agree on some points, sometimes we don't agree on the best we to say things, but that's life. I'm sure that when I'll see him in Seattle or in London during the summer, none of us will be angry, we'll talk about that game we love and we'll play again together... and he'll give me another nice signed card which will be another souvenir of a great time spent together.

We were expecting a lot of that Prof event in Amsterdam, and as things didn't go well, we're all very disapointed.
Mistakes have been made, and I hope we'll build something great for the Profs in 2003.

Coming back with old ideas will not help. Harlan was in Amsterdam last year, and the main event was the worse I've ever seen. Players went there (Jean Marc Schosse is one of them) to play 3 games, and were out of the top 32 because they lost one ! Players had given their score sheet but the results were badly reported in the DCI reporter, these people were out of the tournament while they had to stay in the competition, ... The main event was great this year, and 300 players have played in a good environment, which was not the case last year.

We've had a lot of STSQ in Europe last year, but WotC Europe has less budget than last year. Local distributors are responsible of the organization of a GC in their countries. Do we have to blame Wizards if local distributors don't want to invest money in a main event ? Do we have to blame Wizards because Croatian or Israelian distributors do want to organize a GC while other distributors don't ? Do we have to blame Wizards because the distributor in Sweden can't afford the running of a GC, even if engagements were taken ???

Amsterdam was not Peter's first Pokemon tournament. I've lived the main tournament 'from the inside' and he made a great job there.
I'm a Prof and I did also expect a lot of the Prof event, but I understand that the priority was to run a good main event first, and he did it. Attacking him personally for things that happened late in the evening, after more than 12 hours work as Head judge, and after all the problems he had with one player (one player took him more time than the 299 other players !) is totally unfair.

No Freddy, none of us is forgetting what we've fought for so long here in Europe. Nothing of what happened in Amsterdam will be forgotten quickly. We all want to see more players in our community, we all want to have more nice events, we all want to 'take our game to the next level' in Europe.
A war has never helped to build something, cool discussions, positive suggestions and good relationships have.

Mistakes were made about the Prof event in Amsterdam. OK. Let's work all together, players, professors, Wizards Europe, Wizards USA, ... to have, next year, the best events we've ever had on this side of the Atlantic.
We, as players or professors, have a lot of experience we could share with the Wizards staff. They have a lot of experience, information (and obligations) we don't have or know. Dialogue, respect and communication are the best things if we want to build something strong for our game and the players.

Just one example : I've said, and I still think so, that running the Prof event during a Stadium is not a good thing, it would be better to run it during a Gym (time, place, staff, ...) or on another day than the main Stadium event.
Instructions coming from Wizards US were clear about that : the Prof event has to be run during a Stadium. It's probably ok in the US with all the staff they have (remember San Diego), but the situation is not the same in Europe.
I think our role is not to say 'Wizards Europe are all bloody stupids', but to talk about these instructions with MTM and tell him what we feel and think about it.

Come on European players and Professors, let's keep figthing for our game in our countries, ... in a pacific and positive way [Wink]

Well said Michel.

DDore and Golduck - I've emailed you with a response, and I'd like to keep things to emails or AIM. I've adjusted my posts here and I'd like you to do the same please.

Nice one Mazzy. The last thing that I myself expect in a game is for my opponent to turn into a win-hungry monster. When I played Ness in Round 8 of the STS, Day II, he had Crobat and I had Gatr. Boy, I was up against it. We we both in the last 16 with one round to go.

But. Before starting, we both agreed that whatever happened, because it would come down to the points in the end, whoever was losing in prizes would forfeit just before time would be called, so that the other person would have a crack at making the top 16.

Now Ness is one of the best players that I have ever seen let alone played. But he's good all-round. Because, I made mistakes in that game, and he allowed me to reverse them. Things like evolving into Parasect before downpouring W energy. I admired him for that. And I was happy to play him even though he won against me and knocked me to around 30th place.

That's the kind of spirit that I like to see in an opponent. I don't like rules lawyers. That's what I mean by saying it's a game after all. I have played people and been given 3 points by a losing player even when time was called, because they wanted me to do well. That's just admirable.

What I don't like to see is players getting their fair share of easy deals, reversed moves, time to think etc., and then turning on their kind opponent. Okay, gaming wise it's not required from the rules but it's within the spirit of the game itself.

Someone close to me and a well-respected member of the WizPog community told me after Am - "Kindness is a weakness in this game" and he was right - I learnt this the hard way, and that's why I threw the bottle, Eskil.

But I have a heart too and I want to help those around me in the community to become better players all around. Greed should not be allowed to win over sportsmanship. Any player playing against me should understand that's where I come from when playing this game I'm so passionate about.

I have been told SOOOOOO much information about GenConUK that I can't pass on just yet from seeing Lee Singleton yesterday in the WotC-UK offices, where I picked up promos for my league in person. I've made arrangements for our league to hosting it's first 8-way Single Elim tourney, this Sunday in Slough. And it'll be DCI!!!

All I can say is that for UK Professors, you gotta get involved by emailing Lee on [email protected] or seriously you'll miss out.

The above quote suits you better than anyone else in this mess. The email I received from you is both attacking and with foul language. It's down right rude.

Now just deal with the fact that you lost a game and get on with your life.

You will receive a reply to your email...

To Michel: I agree with you. We should try to help WotC to get better results next year. And teaching or letting MTM and DMTM know how it works in Europe and how it could be resolved in a better way is really the only way to go.

For me personally I will have to wait and see what the Distributor is willing to do this fall.

Wow im online!!! I can't belive it..
I have had some conection problems but i hope they are solved.. [Wink]

I do not know much about the mail's.. But what i do know is that when i saw FK throw that bottle down i got kind of scared becouse i got scared what was going to happen to Stoney.
FK looked thords Stoney, and suddently stoney was gone.. Who know were he went.

If i put myself in Stoney's shoes i would not dear to say anything on any boards becouse in fear of you Fk that you would just argue more and more until you can't even talk to each other.
So if i was in stoney's shoes i would just not be on the boards anymore. And i really hope he's still around.

The reason why i would not be anywere is becouse it's very much Fk that starts up topics, he usaly also is the one posting the most.. [Smile]
And then it's easy to get quick arguing with him.
That's what i think, when you start up topics and post the mot your THA MAN in that topic and very much FK is THA MAN in olmost all the topics. [Smile]

Well in this post it seems that im probably very much against you FK, but im NOT im not on any side.
I think the whole thing that happend in Adam was just really silly and it shuld not have happend.

Hope you guys will be able to talk to each other again. Becouse it was very nasty the thing you did FK...

Another thing that i think was not a good thing to do is when we saw this happening weere was the "TEAM" we all were watching we shuld just get them together and talk about it. But as FK said:
"I do no want to talk about that stuff"
What we were doing was very much supporting Fk, but i think that's also very dumb..
We shuld also support the one that is not that active on the board and the one we do not know that well.
I think that was very bad. Poor stoney.
Probably when Fk, reeds this he will say man crap who's on my side really..

But as i have said im not on any side, i do not want to be on any side becouse the whole thing was just very sick and crazy and this shuld not have happend.

Please Fk, drop me a email.. [email protected]
Becouse i just enjoy taling to you irl and on the boards becouse your a GREAT GUY so you know that and i really hope it that makes you feel bether. Hopefully that makes you feel bether.
You know when you do something dumb it can be easy to focus to much on the bad thing and not focus on the good things so i hope that made a little + instead of all the - that your getting.

Drop me a line and well talk about this summer when im going to London. I hope you not have forgotton that. [Smile]

Im just blown i can't figure it out, man 3-4 heures before all of this happend we were sitting in a resturant and we were having a great time loughing and just talking about the event.
It was just great no one was scared, afraid and had no fear of anything.
That is how the TE shuld be

I hope it's not to many misspelled words..

Regards Steven!

I've seen Stoney. He's okay, I had a chat with him and Crow and it was dang fun! I don't think he's afraid of Freddy at all.

Freddy let Stoney reverse alot of moves. We all saw Stoney that day and he was VERY nervous. Shuffling his deck all the time and just hanging around. Freddy did the right thing. You Dumbledore, You say that Freddy is a bad loser. Well if Freddy wouldnt have let Stoney reverse those moves...what wouldve happened then? I think Freddy wouldve won that game...

But when Freddy made a mistake and wanted to reverse it...Stoney said no. That wouldve ****** me off too. Afterwards Stoney said sorry and Freddy said sorry for getting mad at him.

Both Stoney and Freddy are great guys! It was so fun meeting them along with all the other Team members.

You Super Psyduck wanna know where the Team spirit was? It was there all the time. You guys supported me when I needed it the most. Thank you once again.

I hope we can make the community better here in Europe and I dont want this event to ruin our own Team Europe.

I heard what happend from stoney i asked him why Freddy got mad at him and he say it was because of a FOCUS Band stoney wanted to play but then didnt and he repeated that move to Freddy and it was ok... but when freddy played a wrath and wanted to choose some other cards instead of the 2 he grabbed stoney would not let freddy switch those cards ... i told stoney i also would not like that but would not have gone that mad... my oppenent also made a mistake in draft not removing his miracle berry wich i let him remove though that would cause his hitmonlee to be knocked out and would have influence on the game ... but for me wich did not know it was for the USA ! O_o i let him remove the miracle berry .. well okay thats how i play when its for fun [Smile] and ok that may be a mistake of me and you people can call me dumb ! [Angel] .This would be the best way of putting it in my situation. So sort off i agree with Freddy being mad , but not that mad like whoa [Eek!] .(Dont get all mad at me now [Blush]

Stoney, Freddy, Golduck, ... 3 great players and very nice guys [Smile]

Things happened in Amsterdam, things happened late in the evening when everybody was tired and nervous.

Please try to understand that, under these conditions, everybody can make a mistake or have a 'special' reaction.
We're not Pokemons, we're humans [Wink]

We do not have to put messages on the boards about things that happened between two persons. They're old enough to talk about it together, and I'm sure they will do it and that everything will be forgotten when we'll make a meeting of TE again (why noy in London/GenCon ?)

I'm sure the sprit of Team Europe is still there, but we maybe have to work in a different way than we did in the beginning.
When TE was created by Golduck, we wanted to fight against some Wizards decisions, and our result was great.
Now I think we do not have to go against WotC anymore, but work with them.
We'll never have everything we want, each of us doesn't want the same things anyway, but a cooperation between TE (players and professors) and the different Wizards offices will help everybody.
I'm not talking about events only, I'm also talking about the leagues, problems with release of cards, ... for example.

Please do not use this board to fight and attack, use it to build something for the next weeks, for the future of our game and our community of players.
Thanks [Smile]

Hi all, first I want to congratulate Golduck of winning the tournament, I think Golduck would NEVER cheat like that, and that he was probably just tired. I think he deserved to win the tournament.

quote:
What I don't like to see is players getting their fair share of easy deals, reversed moves, time to think etc., and then turning on their kind opponent. Okay, gaming wise it's not required from the rules but it's within the spirit of the game itself.
quote:

Seems like Freddy has exaggerated his views!

Freddy and I both have different views about the situation, let me tell how I (The ONLY one who has seen everything) see it.

I was attaching a focus band to a pokemon, I DIDNT let go of that focus band, and took it back into my hand.

Freddy DIDNT SEE it, so I showed him AGAIN what I did.

Now I dont know how Freddy plays, but here IN HOLLAND, WHEN U DONT LET GO OF THE ENERGY OR FOCUSBAND, U CAN TAKE IT BACK INTO UR HAND.
This has been this way at EVERY tourney I've been, even SC's and GC's. Every opponent Ive played sees this as a rule

Freddy now accuses me that I have to attach it, I disagreed and didnt attach it, Because I havent done anything wrong.

After that, FK plays a Wrath, he chooses 2 cards, thinks about it for some time, and asks me if he could take the card back and choose another one: YES OR NO. I said NO. Its that simple. at the league I play, at the tourneys I play, they will all say NO.
We see it here as finishing your move.
If I play an item finder, take a trainer card in my hand, and after that if I ask I can take it back, they will all say I cant, because I have finished my move. Simple.

I do NOT like to be called a greed for that thing. Do u think I would be greedy for a trip to the USA? No way! Did u know I am actually happy now that Golduck won instead of me, because he will be much better in representing Europe than I am? probably not, you are calling me greedy while you dont even know me!
When I play at my league, I play kind, let ppl reverse their moves, help them a bit along, etc.
But at the biggest tourney I've ever been, with 32 of the best players from Europe, I will NOT play like a softy. U cant just call me greedy because I play strict!!

If I was coming all the way from England to lose at something you dont agree with, I would be ****** off, but I would NOT SMASH my bottle on the ground, scaring a kid half your age to death!!
I mean, if you go all the way to Amsterdam, be AT LEAST prepared on a chance to lose.

quote:
their fair share of easy deals, reversed moves
EASY DEALS?!?!? you type it like I've been making mistakes all day, which is NOT TRUE. I did not make ONE mistake!

This is MY VIEW at the point of things

quote:
I do not know much about the mail's.. But what i do know is that when i saw FK throw that bottle down i got kind of scared becouse i got scared what was going to happen to Stoney.
FK looked thords Stoney, and suddently stoney was gone.. Who know were he went.

I was scared to death, I had never seen an adult get that furious because he lost a game that he disagreed!

FYI: I went outside, I took a walk in the rain, and returned after I cleared my mind a bit, and went back calmly

quote:
If i put myself in Stoney's shoes i would not dear to say anything on any boards becouse in fear of you Fk that you would just argue more and more until you can't even talk to each other.
So if i was in stoney's shoes i would just not be on the boards anymore. And i really hope he's still around.

U are right, Psyduck, I actually DIDNT WANT to post, and just leave the boards for like 6 months, in fact, I am still thinking about just QUITTING TE and POKEMON at all. Just this last post to CLEAR things up.
I've shared my view now, you guys can flame as much as you want, I dont care anymore.

I don't need to hear of this anymore.

Think what you like. I can accept losing a game, and I've gone through worse in tournaments.

You did let go of your cards. Remember when you attached the focus band, and then took it back into your hand? I then said, 'mmm, what's happening?' and you told me you were changing your mind, and I said sure?

There was also an Elm that you played, and then took back in your hand, earlier in the game.

I said I was sorry for getting mad at you, and you said it was okay and I wished you luck after the second round match because I felt bad. We shook hands and that was it.

The fact that you are young and that others are giving you sympathy doesn't change matters at all.

This statement goes to show that you don't think that there are two sides to this story.

DDore - you're not going to change your mind, so I'm not going to even try to discuss this with you anymore unless you calm down. For me the matter is finished otherwise.

Golduck - I do not think that you should have been DQed period. This whole thing started on the other thread when I saw that you had come on, saying you were the Champion, and having learnt afterwards that you earned it through somewhat contraversial methods. No I don't think that you should phone WotC and give it up, that's absurd. It is the fault of the two players and the judge all around. But you know a prize penalty involves a prize loss AND a prize gain. Had Peter not been sure about how to deal with it, perhaps you could have suggested you start again for something so big. Perhaps you were on your way to winning the match, fair enough. But I think it's right, without having all the stuff about how well or not so well I handled situations in Am, to let everyone know just how you won the final and let people make up their minds after that.

Some of you are making this extremely personal and it's not making things any different with me. One thing that will come about after Am is that I won't be as kind as I was to Stoney during the first 20 mins of a tournament match ever again.

I will ignore any further references to Am and what I did, through emails and through this post. Listen to SauroN, Super Psyduck and sentimental_blastoise as they were there too. Believe me if I was upset a lot more would have happened in Am.

End of matter for me.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this statement but I do find it very scary. Do you think you can write something like this without anyone feeling threatened???

I can assure you that intimidating us won't work. If you mean that statement in a sense that if anyone ever ticks you off again you will get violent in a physical way I can assure you that noone will let you into a tournament again. I'm sure WotC don't want to have persons in tournaments that has threatened their opponents with physical violence. I sure hope that this is a major misstake when you wrote this.

I find all of this very disturbing to read, it seems some of you have got you're team spirit together whilst others clearly haven't. Those that have had their rant and want to put the matter to bed should be allowed to do so now please !!!!

After reading some of the posts from the last few days all I can say of my opinion of Team Europe is I am glad I'm not in it !!
