Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

3 Regionals? Seriously?

This really only makes sense if either:

a. They have more locations split up among the 3 weekends
or
b. They have locations that are used twice during the year (this would again mean more regionals)

If it's the same 13-15 regionals now split over 3 weekends, I'm disappointed. This is going to add a lot of travel for players. Just a year ago (2010-2011 season) players only needed to find the closest regional to them. Now they have to find the closest 3 (if no overlaps). This is two extra very long trips (at least 8-10 hours driving or more) for many areas, especially in the West. You almost can't make those events (comfortably) if you have work/school on Friday. It doesn't work if it isn't summer.

I really hope there will be an overall increase in regionals across the country, otherwise players need to make time/money for 4 large event travels a year instead of 2. (nationals, worlds, and the 2 'far' regionals)

If they have more events to limit travel concerns, having a regional each 'quarter' is a great a idea.

This is probably a move to better accommodate the VGC players. It gives another possible date for them to play in a premier tournament. Arguably it does the same for the TCG except that the TCG premier tournament structure already has events going on all year and this instead adds stress to the players to try to get to an additional tournament that requires travel and hotel plans.

Forgive us all in OP for giving all the players more chances to play in big events....

All of us PTOs involved regret giving the players of the US more chances to go out and do the thing they love to do.

We will try and do better for you in the future.....we never intended to hose our player base by doing the unthinkable...

Thanks to all PTOs from the Cooks to Clay (still bugged about that comment you made at worlds....) to... Heck even the PTOs I don't know. I appreciate this decision and all you do. Ready for Houston Regionals WOOOO.

Prof Clay, as Pidgeotto Trainer explained, the options are restricted by location and money.

People will likely go to the two locations closest to them. Because this is a RC and not an SC, the distances are large. The third location is likely so far that it is out of the question especially with potential overlaps. So, the third weekend doesn't make a difference unless more RCs are added to the total.

Additionally, a lot of people work on weekends. If they want to take advantage of these "more chances," they have to ask off more days. The only advantage is that if you can't get off of work for Fall RCs, you can still make Winter and Spring. You aren't shut out of RCs totally. However, if the argument is that this lets you play in more rather than having the option to get to at least 1, then it has practical restrictions of cost, time, and location against the players.

For example, to attend Winter RC, I will have to skip CCs. The funds are not there to attend both, my job won't appreciate if I ask off for both because of how the two are scheduled.

Requiring players to spend significantly more time and money to stay competitive is a very reasonable issue to discuss. Worlds invites should not only be up for grabs to those who live in a great location, or can afford all those vacations and time off from work/school. There is such thing as too much travel to events.

As a video game player who was very disappointed by how few events there were this year, I'm really happy about more locations as this makes for somewhat larger events where more of my friends can meet up. Thanks to everyone who made it possible.

Hey they NEVER EVER said you HAVE to go to more events. It provides a chance for players who love going to pokemon events and who can go to pokemon events more play time, so don't reject it, embrace it.

If you want to make worlds, then yes, this effectively says you have to attend more events.
I love going to events, but I am a college student. Others have jobs. Younger kids have sports/other activities. Not everyone has the time/money to go to everything physically possible.

Making worlds is obviously a goal for a large portion of the player base, especially the ones that will travel to these 2nd and 3rd regionals. Players who simply want to play as much as they can and have the means to do so are great. But to think most people in the game don't care about implications towards worlds invites with each of these changes is ignorant. Just think of all the discussions about ELO vs. CP etc. over the years.

I am just glad to have more chances to go to Tourneys. My parents don't really take me to BRs. or CCs.(LONG story) I think that it is a wise decision. An example. If someone had an important meeting on the one of the regionals dates, it gives them 2 more times to go. That's a winning situation.

What it really means for a player like you Ross, with the new pressures in your life as you grow, is maximizing your finishes in the events you can attend...AND I think you will find that the majority of the competitive players will find 2 regionals enough for them...3 dates actually will just give you more flexibility in your schedule....

Added to this I think you will find the Christmas/ New Year Marathons start popping up in even more areas of the country for the competitive players, but they ALL must occur during the same week...so no advantage for any particular area in being able to attend 2 marathons this year.

Its gonna work out for everyone

I am very disappointed with this change. It isn't about getting more chances to play, it's about the money. The prize support does not justify paying $1000+ on going to three regional championship. The only thing that does is getting a worlds invite, and when San Diego is expensive already, packing on the amount of events that there are isn't good. If they lower the BFL for States/Regs, then I will be a little more okay with the change, but I am a tad angry at the moment

Why do I get the feeling that neither StL nor Wisconsin will be having Regionals in October? Bah. Time to start pricing flights from Minny to Ft. Wayne or Houston. Ewww. None of that is nice. I can has Dallas, please?
