“Dirty Decks Done Dirt Cheap” –afstandopleren Wins! Cyrus 2nd Check Out Their Decks

IRL Finals Tomorrow

OK This is it. Tomorrow at 2:00 PM in Cedar Grove NJ, we determine who is the best of the least! Round 1 pairings are determined but not published. Every deck does have a player. (I am aware that that Burmy and Cyrus's players haven't made a post on the thread because they have limited access to the gym). I will bring my laptop to the tournament tomorrow and will post results after each round. We should know the final winner at about 6:00 PM or shortly there after.

I have all of the prizes in hand and I've printed mailing labels for each of the contestants. The post office will be closed by the time we finish so the prizes won't be mailed until Monday at the soonest.

We have contestants from VA, IL, MO, OH, TX and The Netherland! It is interesting to note that 3 of the top cut hail from Texas! It is a big state but still that's a great showing.

I plan to make copies of the Top-Cut deck lists available to everyone in our league. Everyone is eager to see how this turns out. Stay tuned for more info...

Would it hurt to at least announce the pairings? It makes predicting "who is going to walk away with all the marbles" much easier. =D

Yeah, we're all like 'F5, F5, F5, F5, F5, ....' I want in on the next one!

Lol just learned what F5 does.
And I won't be able to watch this thread on my big screen plasma TV like the others, as I have a football game (woo!).

So the finals begin tomorrow! GL to all contestants and their deckbuilders!

OK Cyrus here they are....

Good luck, Lissanne! I have to root for you because you taught me about EV training. And told me that my DOB was the day it was that day. Pretty embarrassing.

All the games are in play.
Here are the deck lists:

Pretty much the same with a few minor tweaks.
New strat:
The card explanations are the same as the old strat that I PM'd you (If you need another copy to give I think I still have it)
I added more SSUs because I think that they will have more use in Top Cut, especially with Honchkrow.

Switch-This is in here because of Octillery, who is very likely to be your opponent. Remember-outspeed them and they won't have a chance. If they setup, just know that if they KO the PL ape, use an SF ape to hit hard and spread. Switch is for you to get out of smokescreen, and that is its sole purpose basically. You need to shake off smokescreen, and you can only retreat once, so this is to attack again.
Great Ball-I lowered this to make up for SSU. Just make sure to use it wisely.

Matchups:
ALOT of the matchups are probably in your favor because of weakness.

Ttar-Outspeed them, and use SF ape if you can against Ttar. You must spread to win here, as the flippy burn attack can only get you so far. Use spreading fire to spread to larvitars first, and also sneasel if it isn't setup. TAKE OUT the sneasel first, as if thats gone then they can't setup as fast. Other than that just bash through them quickly, and use rage if they try to spread against you. They can abuse your BTS, so watch out. Kill larvitars fast.

Turtwig- Rage is your attack here. If they do 20 to PL ape then you OHKO turtwig. Outspeed their sneasels here to, just make sure to target Turtwig for the spreads as well. You should have the advantage.

Honchkrow- Rage is big here for prize exhanges, and Spreading Fire is a must, as you HAVE to spread to honchkrows in order to KO them in time with SF Ape. They can outspeed you, just make sure to get setup and hit fast. Their engine can only go so far. Make sure to SSU ape and porygon if they target the porygon.

Leafeon- Advantage here. Use weakness and walk all over them. Spread for additional damage but PL ape should be able to burn through them fast. Not too difficult I think.

Beedrill-You trump weakness, but remember to take out the RR bees, as that will cripple their recovery. Use their BTS against them, and spread to anything you can if the time comes. SSU and poke-rescue to recover PL ape lines if needed (SSU a SF ape, then rescue a PL ape, BTS the entire line up to a PL ape)

Octillery-Switch is here to get out of smokescreen. Other than that, just remember to recover fast from a KO if they get the chance. They can setup fast, but Octillery is OHKO'd by Spreading Fire, so spread here too.

Beautifly-Outspeed them, spread to wurmples, and you have to sacrifice a lot of fires for this beautifly. Use the raging flames attack and get rid of beautiflys in OHKO's, otherwise you are better off spreading to the bench with SF ape.

Overall just keep using SSU+BTS to recover, as you aren't weak to anything but octillery, and he'll only OHKO ape with 2 heads instead of 3, so no need to worry. Just outspeed everything and you'll be fine.

Finally, have fun. Burn through stuff and enjoy it. Take chances, they could win you the game.

14 Basic Grass Energy (Free)

Beautifly PL is a decent card that's usually hindered a lot by Unown G, which is expensive so it shouldn't be to much of a threat.

It's got free retreat, an attack that can deal 60 for 1 Energy (Which can be easily spammed in this format as a lot of played cards have Resistance!) and a Stage 1 that let's itself Evolve for free. In combination with Sceptile GE if you can get it out, it can deal 60 + 3 Special Conditions for only 2 Energy!

General Pointers:
Generally, try to swarm Beautifly and evolve through Silcoon's attack to avoid Galactic HQ damage.

Flipping A LOT OF HEADS is usually nice with the Poke Balls and Life Herbs LOL. Don't depend too much on Life Herb tho.

Try having at least 1 Energy attached to all of them so they can attack in a pinch and attach more if able. The Life Herb and Potions should increase the longevity of your Pokemon to attach an extra Energy or 2.

Matchup pointers!:
VS Sandslash's Budget T-Tar: Try not to use Unown R when there is a T-Tar in play. Despite it being the only Pokemon with Power in this deck, you want to slow them down since you'll deal 60 for 1 anyways and it's a 2 HKO with Poison damage while T-Tar will run out of steam eventually (in theory as you are faster with the 60 for 1.) Do try to get Sceptile out tho as it can obviouusly annoy the heck out of T-Tar and it's sidekicks, aswell as potentially getting a 1HKO on that lone Weavile through Special Conditions.

Pandamom's deck shouldn't pose much of a threat. Both attackers have Resistance but it might be an idea to try to get some Status on Vespiquen due to it's annoying Body that can turn it into a mini Butterfree GE.

VS Ragingphantom's Infernape deck, try to evolve your stuff ASAP as Beautifly DOES NOT HAVE WEAKNESS TO !!1! Have them kill some Unown R's if possible, so you can get setup as well since Infernape SF can completely get your opponents side of the field setup in 1 flip. Sure, you have Resistance to but it really is something you will have to look out for as you can't do 60 for just 1 anymore (All Apes lack Resisistance).

VS Burmy's Slowdrill try to sacrifice some Unown R to get your Sceptile out or several Energy onto a Beautifly or 2. Beware of Zangoose and attach Energy to Sceptile so you can deal with it right from the get go as it WILL be brought up once it hits the field.

Against Charzardboy's Turtwig GL deck you should be able to setup pretty well if Weavile isn't in play. or KO'd Try to get the Poison on Turtwig ASAP obviously, so it will have atleast 1 damage counter on it after the heal. Gennerally, all in all it's a tough cookie for Beautifly due to the Healing.

Waynegg's Octillery PL deck is speedy but flippy. Try not to get Donked and you should be able to get started. Sacrifice an Unown R to buy time if necessary.

An idea VS Cyrus's Snipe deck (IF this matchup EVER happens) is to 'force' them to target Treecko as it is the 'backbone' of the deck. Generally something duh, but any KO on Treecko makes them waste Flash Bites, Poke Turn and whatnot, giving you another chance to get your Beautifly going.

The strategy is to use Gyarados as a main attacker. The way the deck is built, it's meant to give Gyarados more options than normal, so ideally, you can either attack for no energies and do up to 90, or you can Wreak Havoc and mill your opponents cards.

I built this deck with somewhat of a tank mentality as well, and so it's not impossible to get Dragon Beat set up, in which case I would assume you almost auto win. Blissey is used to heal Gyarados, and discard Magikarps, the extra Luxury Ball, extra Chatots, or anything else that you don't find helpful. Return is also not a bad attack in a pinch. 4 Potion help the healing, and Dawn Stadium helps you recover basically for free, but if you're opponent is playing a grass or water deck, you may want to consider using Dawn Stadium as Blissey fodder.

The 4x Chatot MD are very good in getting all the tools you need to tank with Gyarados. Pokedex adds some speed, Volkner's can discard and let you draw at the same time, and Pokemon Rescue can get back your Magikarps if they manage to KO your Gyarados.

I think this is a very good deck considering you can get some of these cards very easily from starter decks, and so I think realistically, the cost would go down, and you would have a little more money for better cards. It can also evolve into a more competitive deck (Smub it.dek getting 5th place at worlds this year).

2 Cyclone Energy $2
9 Basic Dark
7 Fighting
4 Water

$25 total :)

Strategy

3 possible starters

Corsola will build you bench and die, that's what it's there for. Keep in mind, Octillery is your only real substantial attacker while building your bench and you can get 3 different types of Pokemon. If you can scoop it up and keep your opponent from drawing a prize, kudos!

Sableye will get your supporters and help you thin your deck quickly of everything but energy. You should keep all the energy in your deck to the extent possible. Sableye can also pull the T1 donk if the situation presents itself.

Aerodactyl is all about the draw for a quicker set up.

Octillery is best as a swarm. Only use the first attack, Water Vein, because his second attack frankly stinks. Try to keep 3 in play.

Bebe gets you the pokemon you need while refilling an energy to your deck

POV gives you extra draw while putting energy back into your deck as well

Felicity you should discard two of your starter pokemon for the draw. After all, once you are set up, you don't need them.

Couple BTS with SSU to refresh a maimed Octillery.

Luxury Ball and Great Ball help you get completely set-up quicker.

Cyclone Energy disrupts and pulls a (hopefully) more favorable Pokemon to KO off their bench. Only use it if you need to because it it usually more useful in the deck.

Special dark is for the possible T1 donk. This would be the only time, for the most part, it would be attached. Keep the rest in your deck to fuel Octillery.

Most of all, have fun. Good Luck!!

The basic energy generally don't get used and stay in the deck. use them very sparingly.

To whoever is playing my deck,

First off, if the player has changed for this deck, then please look at my original post, located here:

http://pokegym.net/forums/showpost.p...&postcount=146

Anyways...I wish you the best of luck! Like I said in my last PM to WWNN, I feel like my deck offers anyone playing it the chance to show off their skills, and the top cut is no exception. I made next to no modifications to my winning list; however, the one that I _will_ make is extremely important:

*Houndoom G. Your metagame is FULL of grass guys, so I would be shocked if you didn’t play against at least one grass deck before all is said and done. Houndoom G should single-handedly negate CharzardBoy if timed well, and make Beautifly/Leafeon/Beedrill much easier matchups. This tech is most likely going to win you a game, because we have a 75% chance of going up against a Grass deck that is fire weak (2-1 Beautifly, 2-1 Beedrill, 2-1 Leafeon and friends).

Now that I’ve gone over that, let’s look at your matchups. Assuming nobody changes their lists (I don’t think they will), here is what I’d suggest you do vs each opponent:

VS Tyranitar/Weavile: snipe, snipe, snipe…Larvitar is not your friend, but as long as you follow where their energy goes, then you win. Also, feel free to read up on my anti-Tyranitar suggestions in the original post.

VS Leafeon/Vespiquen/Sceptile: if they ever get fully setup, then you could lose easily. Luckily for us, though, we’re faster…Much faster. Sceptiles can and will be a nightmare, so I’d go after the Treeckos first. Cheap targets near the game’s end are also nice, too.

VS Beautifly: death to Wurmple!!! Near the game’s end, in case you’re struggling, just try to get some damage on their active Beautifly, and then swoop in with Houndoom for the kill.

VS Turtwig: although you should probably begin the game with sniping, especially to negate the Weavile threat, Houndoom G is your star, and could easily tear through 2-3 Turtwigs.

VS Octillery: Wayne is playing Drifloon and Drifblim, so you may have an easy time just donking him; however, if this is not the case, then just try to go for OHKO’s whenever you can. Although it’s preferred you take out the Octilleries, a Remoraid KO could be just as good (or better) in the long run.

VS Beedrill/Zangoose: sniping should carry you the whole way through this game, but just watch out for Kakuna RR’s Poke-Body, tread carefully when benching Pokemon due to Invite and Strike, and know when the moment is right to attack with Houndoom G (or even bench it at all).

VS Infernape: kill Chimchars…Especially the energized guys. Your active Resists Infernape, and in case they ever Close Combat? Well…That should be an easy kill. Their Ninetales is less than stellar in this matchup.

Less expected threats to watch out for:::
-Manectric PL. As mentioned in my last post, this guy could be the bane of your existence, so be careful.
-Random Lightning Pokemon. Sometimes, you might have to attack with Houndoom G just because there aren’t any better options.
-Nidoqueen RR. Snipe the Nidoran at all cost. Unlike Manectric, which you can wipe out pretty easily, Nidoqueen will most likely never leave play once it gets onto the field.

Revised Deck List and strategy PART 1
________________________________________
4 Tyranitar SF = 6.00
1 Weavile SW = 3.00
1 Nidoqueen RR = 1.00
4 Pupitar SF = 2.00
1 Nidorina RR = 0.25
2 Sneasel LA = 0.50
1 Nidoran RR = 0.25
4 Larvitar SF = 1.00
1 Chatot MD = 0.25
4 Aerodactyl GL = 1.00

4 Bebe = 2.00
1 Luxury Ball = 0.50
2 Broken Time Space = 2.00
4 Underground Expedition = 2.00
3 Switch = 0.60
4 PokeBall = 0.80
1 Night Maintenance = 1.50

17 Basic Dark = Free
1 Basic Psychic = Free

Total = 24.65

The basic strategy is the same for a “normal” Tyranitar deck, with a little modification. Your preferred starter is Aerodactyl GL, as he has a good bit of HP and can draw 2 cards with his first attack. You want to use 1-2 of him to draw, allowing you to get set up, building Tyranitars on the bench. Since this is a budget format, I wanted a Pokémon with a lot of staying power, so Tyranitar was the one I chose, since he has 140 HP and can OHKO all Pokémon with enough energy. All you have to do is have him sit on the bench for a few turns, building energy, then promote him and sweep with Grind, or use some Spinning Tails. I also added in a 2-1 Weavile line to increase the energy acceleration. That way, you can use Shadow Charge a few times, then free retreat and continue the assault with Tyranitar. Unfortunately, Tyranitar’s PokeBody won’t be too helpful, but you should get some use out of it. Nidoqueen is a new addition, because the healing in this format is epic, and she also is a great secondary attacker. Nidoqueen will normally just sit on your bench and heal between turns, so feel free to retreat/Switch a Tyranitar to recover it’s HP for a few turns.

The trainers are a bit sparse, but when playing budget; that happens. 4 Bebe, 1 Luxury ball, and 4 Pokeball round out your Pokémon search, and 4 Underground Expedition consists of your draw. You’ll probably use them early game, along with Aerodactyl, so try to get at least 2 Tyranitars set up before the midgame. That way, when draw gets sparse, you won’t have to worry about getting a line out fast. Broken Time Space helps getting lines out quickly, and can help you avoid OHKOs from pesky Honchkrow G decks. Switch is there to save a brutally damaged Tyranitar from death; you can sacrifice an Aerodactyl for another two cards while you attach to another benched Larvitar/Pupitar/Tyranitar. Night Maintenance is to save either a 1-1-1 line of tyranitar or to grab a Weavile/Energy.

The energy is pretty standard; no Special Dark because of the price, so Basic Dark will be used. Plus, that means all of the darkness can be retrieved with Tyranitar’s Body.
Basic strategy will consist of building towards the midgame, feel free to give up 1-2 or even three prizes building Tyranitars, because with Spinning Tail, you may get many prizes at once. Just keep adding more energy to Tyranitars, and then attacking with either Grind or Spinning Tail, whichever works best for that situation.

For specific strategies regarding the various decks you might face in the top cut: (ranked in comparative strength, with 1 being hardest, 5 being easiest). Initially, I will list the first place decks, and last I will give the second place decks (basically your first round possibilities) Based on the way WWNN is running the tourney, you have one of 3 possibilities for your first round: Octillery, Slowdrill, and Beautifly.

1. Honchkrow G:
This is one of the better decks in the format, and if you have to face it, it’ll be in the later rounds. The general strategy will be to build towards the midgame again, and get Nidoqueen out early. Nidoqueen is the BANE of Honchkrow G, as Honchkrow G only does 40 damage to damaged Pokémon, which becomes 20 by their next turn with Nidoqueen. However, this means that you must protect Nidoqueen early, and if possible, use a Broken Time-Space to get Nidoqueen out in one turn. If you do it that way, you’ll have discarded the probable Galactic’s HQ that was in play, avoiding the 40 evolution damage from Galactic’s HQ, and your basic/stage 1 forms won’t be vulnerable. Basically, if you can survive into the mid game with 1-2 Tyranitars, you should be able to One-Hit-Knock-Out (OHKO) all of his Pokémon in consecutive turns. Another main point when playing against Honchkrow G is that they use a lot of Poke-Powers, so pay attention, and use Darkness Drive (Tyranitars Poke-Body) to re-attach Energy that have been discarded from knocked out Tyranitars. It’s definitely a winnable match if you play your evolutions at the right times (when no Galactic HQ is in play) and are able to knock out his Pokémon consistently.

1-2. Infernape:
The real fear about this deck is the fact that they play 2 of the SF Infernape, which can self-power(on a flip) and is fighting type, basically 2HKOing your Tyranitars. The MD Infernape is not really a threat, as it is really a one trick pony, able to OHKO a Tyranitar at the cost of 4 turns of energy attachment. Your strategy in this game should probably be to get a Tyranitar out quickly and start using Spinning Tail. Once a few of those are used, which shouldn’t be a problem, either you can knock out many Pokémon all at once, or use a second Tyranitar and use Grind with a greatly reduced energy number and sweep the rest of the Pokémon.

2-3 Turtwig SP’s:
Honestly I didn’t even bother building the deck to see how it stacked up against Tyranitar. Turtwig just heals itself when it damages, and Weavile makes it dark type, but Tyranitar just eats Turtwig alive with Grind. The early pressure will be the worst, because your early evolutions are weak to grass. Turtwig is also very slow, and if you equally slug against Turtwig, you will win, even if you start at an energy disadvantage. Besides, turning the Turtwig into a Dark Type with Weavile makes the match even easier, because you can recover energy with Darkness Drive. Your main strategy should be to Grind your way to victory, as long as you can pretty much OHKO the Turtwigs. You can even stall for extra turns by Switching out Tyranitars for benched Aerodactyl GLs and Chatots while you add more energy to Tyranitars. Once you hit 5 energy on a Tyranitar, it’s pretty much game over, as you now OHKO Turtwigs, and they don’t get any damage bonus coming off the bench.

Second place decks:

1. Octillery:
The real fear of this deck is the flips. Octillery can OHKO your Tyranitars, but it needs to get 3 heads flips, and it’s not even guaranteed that they will get that many flips to use. 4 energy Grinds OHKO anything in the deck, so just sweep with that attack, or go for Spinning Tail and get rid of his entire field in 3 attacks. The set up Pokémon for his deck, Drifblim, is also weak to Dark, so that gives you an added advantage. The recovery is very poor as well, because midgame his hand will consist of energy mainly, so getting Octillerys back from the discard is nigh impossible.

2-3 Slowdrill (Burmy’s budget Speedrill):
This matchup shouldn’t be a problem either. The deck sets up slowly, and cannot recover fast enough when Beedrills are knocked out. The power usage also engages Darkness Drive, so you should have a field day attaching energy to Tyranitars. Their Broken Time-Spaces also help you as well, so take that advantage. Nidoqueen helps as well, because of the low damage output early game, because they are almost forced to get an RR Beedrill first to start the slow build to 120 damage with the GE Beedrill.

Revised Deck List and strategy PART 3
________________________________________
2-3 Beautifly and friends:
Nidoqueen will help this matchup tremendously, keeping poison from killing off your Tyranitars, and enabling you to whittle down the damage Beautifly does. Switch will also help, allowing you to build AND heal Tyranitars while they kill Aerodactyls. I don’t forsee much problems. Spinning Tail might be the way to go in this matchup, as you need upwards of 5 energy anyway to OHKO Beautifly, so either get enough energy to 2HKO on each Tyranitar (3), or go Aggro Spinning Tail.

4-5 Leafeon /Sceptile:
I wish that we could face this deck in the first round, but unfortunately, it came from the same pod, so no go. Basically, 2HKO everything in the deck. You’ll probably not even face it, but if you do, don’t worry. (because it’ll have to win in the first round at least). Switch and Nidoqueen help tremendously as well, because the low damage output of the deck.

On behalf of WWNN the first round results are as follows:
Burmy (Dana-note player change) beat Sandslash (Sam) 2-0
Charizard Boy (Greg) beat Pandamon (Andrew S) 2-0
Cyrus (Drew G-note player change) beat Waynegg (Elizabeth) 2-1
Afstandopleren (Chip) beat Ragingphantom (Andrew K) 2-0

Round 2 pairings
Burmy (Dana) vs Afstandopleren (Chip)
CharizardBoy (Greg) vs Cyrus (Drew G)

Burmy's deck is disgustingly good. I'd be surprised if anyone else won the tournament, but I have faith in my deck, as well as my player!

*Crosses fingers for a turn one Magikarp donk twice in a row in the finals* =D

RE the new post: great modifications to the deck, Wayne! Just for fun, I tested the matchup out some...And it is close (especially now that I don't have Drifloons to donk)! If I see you at any Battle Roads, we should play our decks against each other in person.

I'm surprised that people think Beautifly has Fire Weakness... But whoa! Great that my deck made the finals and huge props on Chip playing it well!!!:thumb:

Eh oh well, I was really tired when I sent that in - at least Houndoom can hit for more damage than Honchkrow =O

(And at least Turtwig gets torn up by Houndoom =P)
