Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

08 Aust. Nats Thread: Top cuts fixed.

No luck on a change yet. As another player (though not a participant) pointed out, Frank is ruling for "fairness" over the precedents of POP recommendations and Australian Nats history, which has always had a top 8 for Masters (we're simply not big enough to warrant a bigger cut).

The problem is that the TOP states "guidelines" and "should be", not "rules" and "must be".

Guidelines? Guidelines? I dont think the Pokémon Organized Play Tournament Operation Procedures (TOP) are guidelines. The only document that are guidelines are Pently Guidelines.

Base on numbers provided the top cut is wrong.

2.3.5. Determining the Number of Swiss and Single Elimination Rounds
Needed
Use the following guidelines to determine the number of rounds needed to
determine a winner in a Swiss plus Single Elimination tournament:
Players per Age division: Swiss Rounds: Single Elimination:

6-8 2 or 3 Top 2
9–11 3 or 4 Top 2
12–16 3 or 4 Top 4 or 2
17–22 4 or 5 Top 4 or 2
23–32 4 or 5 Top 8, 4 or 2
33–45 5 or 6 Top 8, 4 or 2
46–64 5 or 6 Top 16, 8, 4, or 2
65–90 6 or 7 Top 16, 8, 4, or 2
91–128 6 or 7 Top 32, 16, 8, 4, or 2
129–256 7 or 8 Top 32, 16, 8, 4, or 2

JR Should be 2
SR Should be 4
MA Should be 8

Krucifers post makes it sound like you are doing best 2 of 3 in SWISS. Thats a new one to me, I dont think that is allowed to be done.

Note that the first thing written in section 2.3.5 (Determining the Number of Swiss and Single Elimination Rounds Needed) is

TOP said:

Emphasis is from the document, not from me. They are thus guidelines.

Australia does best 2 of 3 in Swiss in all premier events.

As for the cuts, we have definite pro-T8/anti-T16 from seeds 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7, indications towards it from conversations with 3, and haven't talked to the others.

I just feel that those of us who did make T8 worked hard to get into it, and having people with losing records in top cut because it's a 57% cut reduces the value of our work. Where we would have been guaranteed 8th, we are now only guaranteed 16th, even after doing so much better than they did.

Edit: Having talked to more people, apparently 7 out of the top 8 seeds feel very very strongly about this.

Marcus!!!

GL day 2 bro

haha thanks man. I'm trying my best to get there this year :)

Evil Psyduck: If it's as you say, Oh man- let's just say it's been about 4 years since I've gotten mad enough to yell at someone. That would push me over. This OP stuff has been happening for a while. I'm one of Aus' top Pokemon Players and Judges, and I'm not allowed to even voice my opinion.

Though, It's been an up and down day for me. INCOMING RANT!

The idea is, those of us in Top 8, we worked so damn hard today. My only loss was a double Prized Mantine. Many of us with mere 2 hours sleep due to massive decktesting to make Top 8 are furious.

hey great, all my mates are in T16, I'm happy for them, but I don't think it's fair to go against tournament rules because some people were afraid of not making Top Cut. Welcome to the world of gaming people, only 8 places. You want em, you work for em.

And all this cheating crap. Let me put it out there now, not allowed to Trade between rounds? Making it T16 so people don't Cheat their way in? There's only ONE person accused of cheating and I don't even think he was. This person made Top 8. Either way, he'd make top cut.

The trading thing- Only because we didnt want people changing decks between rounds? People understand the rules, and by going so far to stop said "cheating" which NO ONE is guilty of- and that's not because of the tournament guidelines, that's because Pokemon players are well behaved and honest 98% of the time. If people wanted to change decks, whats stopping them from taking a card from someone's folder outside and switching it? It's an entirely a flawed logic.

Last but not least, When rulings are made, other qualified professor's are allowed to input opinion and debate against some rules. The Level X rule is complete rubbish. You cannot scramble a Palkia Lv.X etc etc. If you heard it off Dave (we miss you Dave D:), I don't want word of mouth, As a professor, I want it written down in an e-mail from him saying who it's from, or I want to see it under a ruling question on Pokegym. When I put up my hand to debate this, as one of our countries top professors, I'd like my opinion to be heard out and not to be shutdown immediately.

Good luck to all in the top 16- well done 9th-16th place. You're playing as one of the best in the country. No offense to you guys, some of you are good mates, but let's face it, you're here because of some divine luck. Some of you deserve to be there though.

If they overdo the top cut, POP doesnt have to recognise the results. Your Nats may well be nullified and you are then stuck w/ just invites only from rankings, no paid trip. No way those top cut numbers correct. The mouth already posted the #'s needed for top cut in each division. It verified what I said earlier.....T2 JRs, T4 SRs and T8 MAs.

You know, it's things like this which make the rest of the World laugh at us.

So

if any US guys wanna laugh, go ahead. I'll be laughing with you at how this tournament is run. It's our Nationals and even if I did something, the best event we have has been soured thoroughly.

I think

if Trips were lost

there would be a huge uproar.

lol the whole tournament was legit except for the fact that we have MD pre-release way before its release, and changing of the top 2, top 4, top 8 ...to Top 4, Top 8, Top 16
besides that BS, everything was all kool
 you've had your MD prerelease already, and it's touranment legal there? how can that be?

'mom

Yeah. Our Nats have been turned into a total joke. I'll be laughing too - bitterly. We all know the cuts we should have - if only our TO/HJ (who, may I point out, is the Australian OP manager) knew it too. If we lose the trips, there'll be rage.

'mom: MD isn't tournament-legal yet until it's released in a few weeks, but we are having our prereleases today. =/

No, you're right. The prereleases clash with top cut, so those of us playing in top cut can't play in prerelease, which really sucks. We can pay the money and get the product, but we don't get to actually play, which is where all the fun is. So, y'know, you hold the prerelease at Nats so you can get all the good players in the same prerelease, and then they don't even get to play.

2-day Nats: day 1 Swiss, day 2 top cut.

... lol, I just realised that since 16 out of 28 Masters are in top cut, there's only 12 of them left for prerelease. fail.

yay, i win. i'd like to thank my mom, dad, pokegym and jedi_amara for all their help they've been such good people and most of all; i won.
