Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

A New Location for Worlds 2013?

Welcome to sunny Helsinki - Finland. While in San Diego they had 70 degrees, Helsinki had 80 degrees and sunny weather. To me, Hawaii is from another side of the world, with 30h flights i can get there, and I've been there twice. Now it's your time to fly a bit longer and come to my beautiful city.

We have quite a cheap convention center and a nice hotel at the shore, just like in San Diego.

Oh, and we have never got an earthquake, tsunami, volcanic activity or hurricanes. :)

Well, 2010 there were very few players at Worlds, compared to other years. But I think they stuck with Hawaii for next year because of the Japanese players. They didn't get Worlds qualifiers this year because of the earthquake, so TPCi gave them their "favorite location" next year as kind of compensation (that's just what I think why it's in Hawaii again despite all complaints of players and low player numbers). Under other circumstances I couldn't understand why they hold it in Hawaii again, but this is a legit reason imo.
i'm pretty sure hawaii was set as the location for worlds 2012 well BEFORE the earthquake/tsunami hit japan earlier this year...

No dude all of NY is extremely taxed, not just the city. I live here in NY so I know. Its extremely expensive to live here. New York State itself is a huge contradiction.

Contradiction #1 - You have 80% of the wealth in NYC area alone. The rest of the 'upstate' is extremely poor and lacking of things to do, very boring.

Contradiction #2 - Upstate residents pay 100% property taxes on thier homes and pay insurance for cars since driving is a must in Upstate NY, very poor public transportation system. NYC great transportation system so no need to pay for cars or insurance. NYC - Not enough land for personal homes so people pay out their butts for Renting.

So although it would be cheaper to fly to Worlds if it were in NY, you are paying more for hotels and meals. And for the Japanese players isnt Tokyo an exact copy of NYC?

Actually, Towns Like Saratoga Springs in Upstate NY have some of the richest people in New England living there. The average home goes for 1.2 Mill and up...

So yeah, Upstate has money too.

But I totally support Worlds on the East Coast. I'm from NY, but I think Washington DC could be a cool location too; it's kinda expensive, but there is almost an endless amount to see there.

Does anyone have a list of child-centered holiday destinations (in the USA) with a major airport and good weather in August that can handle large events?

Note how my question effectively excludes anywhere in England even without the USA location :( Some world class golf courses help too: got to have something to do when you are not telling spectators that standing on chairs and leaning forward has all sorts of safety implications ( the chair may tip over and deposit said spectator in a broken bones kind of way on other spectators for those that don't understand why I had to ask them to get down from the chairs.). I do other stuff at worlds too but telling spectators the obvious in a polite way is a part of the staff role. Wish we didn't live is such a litigious time *shrug*

[Edit: my criteria for the world's location isn't right, cheap direct flights from Europe and Japan are a distinct plus]

It is about time they put Worlds on the East Coast again. Not in NYC( high taxes). I wish that it would be in Orlando or another location from the Mid-section to the lower section...my two cents in the thing.

best and most radical solution:
cancel worlds for 1 year
make worlds in europe next year with the money saved from canceling worlds

Uh, no. Do you know how much money Pokemon would lose? Pretty much no one would want to play for that one season of Pokemon. Cancelling worlds for one year is basically cancelling the entire season. And the fact that not everyone that's playing Pokemon at the time will still be playing when worlds comes around again means that Pokemon now missed out on customers they never had. So no, just no.

why would pokemon want to have worlds in new york way to far away way expensive for everyone and i could prolly find a hotel with rats there more expensive than hilton bayfront:nonono:

I think Worlds should be set up like this

USA-East
Japan
Europe-UK

USA-Midwest
Japan
Europe-Diffrent Contry

USA-West
Japan
Europe-Diffirent Country the last time

USA-East
Japan
UK
Repeat with Europe holding it in a Diffrent contry each time its not in the UK

Worlds in New York is actually a good idea aside of the high costs, It's easy to acces.
Not really that big of an issue for Europe players :)P)
What about Amsterdam? Big airport, lots of international trains, nice to visit.
The only problems are that the weather sucks. And some of the places arent really that good for childeren...

Listen: if worlds were in NY, I would post all the best ways to save money! Also. don't forget: NYC has the best public transportation system in the world, so no one--and I mean no one--would need to rent a car.

As for Worlds ever leaving the USA, that is never going to happen! The USA is what keeps this TCG alive and running--we have the most players. So, just imagine the uproar from the largest part of the Pokemon community if that were to happen.

This wouldn't happen, there aren't too many good players in NY.

Epic fail :nonono::nonono:

Johnny, that is why everyone could stay in NJ. NYC public transportation is so awesome that a cheap hotel in NJ would allow them to save even more money.

Self-fulfilling prophecy.

Does the USA have a greater playing population than Japan? I don't know but I would not be surprised to find that Japan even with a smaller population overall has more players.

The USA has more players than Europe.
2011: 12592 USA ranked players
2011: 3879 EU ranked players

How much of that is down to all USA events being free and almost none of the EU events being free? Card cost is much greater over here. Travel and fuel cost way more as well. Hmm the numbers aren't telling the whole story.

Maybe compare nationals attendances to show how many committed players there are?

2011: 1472 USA nationals
2011: 1559 EU nationals.

Seems like there is a case for Europe matching the USA.

Note this doesn't prove anything, but should demonstrate that declarations of where the most players reside is fraught with problems of just how you count those players. If I'd used percentages or a pie chart presentation it would show Europe as three times better than the USA! The only thing that can be said with confidence is that there are sufficient players in Europe that a European Worlds would not need to import lots of USA players to get the numbers up.

Come on, that isn't really a fair comparison, now is it. At least compare the same level of player commitment.

EU Nationals - 14 events, average travel distance? What, a couple hour drive. Average tournament length, one day.
United States - 1 event, average travel distance? What, a couple hour FLIGHT. Tournament length, three days.

Europe pays more for gas for sure, but the US Nationals requires a flight (for most) and three days. European travel costs for Nationals are far less than the US Nationals.

Try comparing US regionals with EU nationals. This is a much closer comparison. Since all US Regionals are on the same day you can only attend one of those just as EU players can only play in one National.

2011: 2,833 USA players (13 events) population 307 million
2011: 1,559 EU players (14 events) (for the 14 countries) population 384 million

Now that the perspective is a little better let me say, I would love to have Worlds held in Europe!

scorpidad: my point was that you can prove just about anything with the numbers. The groups are too dissimilar for all they play a common game. All it is safe to conclude is that there are sufficient players in Europe that worlds would be a massive event even if not a single USA player turned up.

How do you measure player commitment? A flight to New York from Heathrow can cost less than a much shorter hop to the mainland of Europe. There is no valid perspective, no comparison where the differences don't exceed the similarities.

Actually, Helsinki is pretty nice. I stopped at the airport there during my flight to Moscow, Russia.

What's the problem with Worlds in Europe? Is it really more expensive than Hawaii for you? I highly doubt.
