Was it really good judgement to have minors playng Poker in the Pokemon Play Area
I have to go on record saying that I feel that a poker tournament that included minors in the Pokemon Common Play area was really poor judgment.
I did not know it was happening until early Sunday morning when my kids came to the room after being in the common gaming area. From now on, I guess I will keep a closer watch on the boards before an event. None of mine played, but a minor that we brought with us did play. I don't know his parents view on it and did not tell them, but I feel bad that he was involved whle he was in my care, but I never thought I had to worry about him in the Pokemon Common play area.
My personal views aside, if consenting adults want to play poker in private that is up to them, if they want to include their own kids, again that is up to them. But to hold this in the common Pokemon play area and accept and expose minors to it, is not acceptable behavior. Accepting booster packs of cards from them to play makes it gambling since their packs are at risk.
Sunday evening we were setting up a draft for some of the staff kids while we were gone to dinner, and had to move it from the Pokemon play area because there was more poker going on, but this time for money. Did the event the night before contribute to this? I think it sent a message that it was OK. Chris, Alan, and Matt who were putting the draft together had the good judgment to move their draft rather than expose the kids to the poker.
I have read posts that some people don't want dice due to the association with gambling, so what does poker do to this? What about the parents that came with their younger kids to this family event and saw poker being played for Pokemon Cards, or in the case of Sunday night for cash?
Sunday evening when we brought dinner back to some of the kids in the draft we saw that kids were playing poker for cash, so I called hotel security and asked them to close down any gambling going on, first because it is illegal, we should have zero tolerance for it, and second I don't feel it is the right message to send at a Pokemon event.
Next time, please use good judgement and keep this away from the kids.
I'm proud to be the stick in the mud on this issue. I also don't think the people involved are bad people, they just wanted to have some fun, but they didn't show the best judgement on this issue by the location chosen, and before allowing a minor to participate, they should have approval from a parent or guardian.
