I got the format set. It works well because a radio station here runs texas hodlem events every week and i got thier format. Its a nice idea knowing how popular the wsop is but this format will be well and i know it by heart so it will make it easier.

I'm there.

Also, Slicknscc will not be able to attend Worlds, so will need his name removed from the list.

The night of the tournament if you drop by i might have a few seats open. Since this tournament went under 25 and time may restrict it i will cut the seats as 28 which is 4 full tables.

So far i have confirmed it will be in the town and country hotel just no spot has been confirmed. That day ill be easy to notice by my red shirt with a freaked out cow on it. Look for me that day so i can spread the word on where ill hold this event.

If we get the 28 to fill it up the prize will boost to the following:

1st: 32 packs
2nd: 21 packs
3rd:10 packs
4th:6 packs
5th: 6 packs

I wont give 4th and 5th prizes unless we hit the max of 28. The rebuy option will be enforced so everyone has a 2nd chance but you ant rebuy unless you hit under 500 or u lose all your chips. Even if you rebuy, the chips you get wont change nomatter what the blinds are.

Here are the results from our first poker tournament run by me at the 2005 world championships:

We had 30 players which was the cap for this huge tournament and thanks to the buy-in rule we had a grand total of:

209 pokemon packs

1st: 57 packs
2nd: 39
3rd: 29
4th+5th: 19
Everone had 1 pack and i got 16 for judging

Here are the top 5 finishers:

5th:Master Professor Birch
4th: dont remember(sorry)
3rd: LuMaga1
2nd: Anthony Durso
1st:Banginbox

Due to the craziness of this i dont have the placing of the 20 other players but it was an amazing sucsess and done an hour earlier we would of made this a 50 player tourney due to all the interest

Thanks in part to the 3 players who helped me in getting this off the ground:
DukeFireBird-For helping keep the tourney strong and helping in keeping the confusion to a minimum
LuMaga1: for helping me set the chips out and for helping get players to the table
Rocketman and Pokemebob: for helping watch the area when i needed to step away

Thank you all for making this a smashing sucsess and for making alot of buzz about it for the future.

I promise ill have this at origins 2006 and worlds 2006 so watch for it next year and next year i am hoping to have no limit on the max players so we can get everyone in.

See ya all next year. Info on all these tourneys will be up atleast 4 months ahead of time so everyone can prepare and at origins ill guarentee a spot for it :thumb:

Was it really good judgement to have minors playng Poker in the Pokemon Play Area

I have to go on record saying that I feel that a poker tournament that included minors in the Pokemon Common Play area was really poor judgment.

I did not know it was happening until early Sunday morning when my kids came to the room after being in the common gaming area. From now on, I guess I will keep a closer watch on the boards before an event. None of mine played, but a minor that we brought with us did play. I don't know his parents view on it and did not tell them, but I feel bad that he was involved whle he was in my care, but I never thought I had to worry about him in the Pokemon Common play area.

My personal views aside, if consenting adults want to play poker in private that is up to them, if they want to include their own kids, again that is up to them. But to hold this in the common Pokemon play area and accept and expose minors to it, is not acceptable behavior. Accepting booster packs of cards from them to play makes it gambling since their packs are at risk.

Sunday evening we were setting up a draft for some of the staff kids while we were gone to dinner, and had to move it from the Pokemon play area because there was more poker going on, but this time for money. Did the event the night before contribute to this? I think it sent a message that it was OK. Chris, Alan, and Matt who were putting the draft together had the good judgment to move their draft rather than expose the kids to the poker.

I have read posts that some people don't want dice due to the association with gambling, so what does poker do to this? What about the parents that came with their younger kids to this family event and saw poker being played for Pokemon Cards, or in the case of Sunday night for cash?

Sunday evening when we brought dinner back to some of the kids in the draft we saw that kids were playing poker for cash, so I called hotel security and asked them to close down any gambling going on, first because it is illegal, we should have zero tolerance for it, and second I don't feel it is the right message to send at a Pokemon event.

Next time, please use good judgement and keep this away from the kids.

I'm proud to be the stick in the mud on this issue. I also don't think the people involved are bad people, they just wanted to have some fun, but they didn't show the best judgement on this issue by the location chosen, and before allowing a minor to participate, they should have approval from a parent or guardian.

Ok, just wanted to point out that we had nothing to do with the money games going on. They were there at about the same time we were, they did not start because of us. The players in the money game traditionally play a money game the night after any major tourney, and we had nothing to do with them.
P.S., which kid was yours? If he was the kid that made the top table, congradulate him, because that kid was one of the best young Poker players I have ever seen. Again, we had nothing to do with the money game, and it was because we didn't want to use money, which can get ugly quickly, that we used packs as a buy-in. And everyone got a pack back, so it's not like anyone walked away with nothing.

You completely miss the point of Mike's post. If you are a minor, it is ILLEGAL to gamble. Peroid, end of report. You put in ( read PAY) 4 packs, get 1 back, with the CHANCE to WIN many more packs if you WIN. That, my friends is considered gambling in any state! I concur 100 % with Mike Schell. If I was around the play area Sunday night and saw money games played, I would have called too. That was OPEN PLAY AREA for POKEMON TCG...NOT POKER. Between the Piglet Draft (which was great btw Vince et al! ) and the TX hold'em tourney (for packs) saturday night, NO space was left for OPEN PLAY. I played a match or two over on the patio while my son played in the Piglet draft. I thought the tourney was going to be held in a room originally??? Shouldnt be held in a Pokemon related area Joe, no matter how much fun was had. Plus, if a minor was playing, you should have had Parental/ legal guardian permission 1st!! My son played an Anthony Durso in 10- age division(I believe that was his name in 8th rd.) ...did you really let a "smallville" player play or was that a Dad? Next year...please find a different location Joe.

I still see risking 3 packs of product as gambling and it sends the message that it is OK to step up to the cash game. I just don't feel that minors should be included or exposed, and I feel it should be done in private and away from the kids.

We like the family involvement in Pokemon and feel like any common area where kids will be should not include gambling.

Get a room somewhere!

I knew the issue of parents not liking kids playing poker would arrise and the bad taste comments would surfuce. Listen, when i creatd this i knew backlash from parents would be big and the issue of: is poker gambling?? and is this the wrong message to send to kids was out there but i went along with it anyways. I came up with a fun way to enjoy the night of worlds outside pokemon. I orrigionally made this a 15+ event so i dident hear any arguments from parents on poker is not for kids but so many kids 12+ asked me to change it so i did. I was very careful not to include any kids under that age because then i would of been a bad guy. Dont you dare judge me on having bad tatse or having poor judgement because i planned this for 2 months and wokred hard to make this as fun as could be.

As for fullops cash games i had nothing to do with it. So what if the gaming area was full,it dosent matter because we filled only 4 of over 12 tables there and the piglet draft scopped up the other 6 or so. I had no choice but to drop the tourney there due to space restrictions. We needed light for the cards and the outside moon wasent enough so i had one option and i went with it. We had a great sucsess and many players loved it including the young ones who played. Yes poker is the adults game and is widely known as a big form of gambling but i dont make this game as a step forward to showing kids gambling is fun. I make it a once to twice a year event to give everyone something else to do at a pokemon event. I will say this right now: "I wont stop doing this at origins and worlds as long as they are around and as long as interest holds true ill still keep it going"

I am sorry if parents were offended at me using pokemon space for poker but i used it to have fun and to what i id see everyone did to so next time you want to argue with me about this just dont play and dont let your kids play.

And I will say this right now:

Gambling is not something that POP wants associated with its events, and we will take any action we deem necessary to prevent it, including suspensions.

Had I been aware of gambling of any type taking place in the Pokemon open play area, I would have nipped it in the bud in a heartbeat.

Personally, I find involving minors in gambling despicable. Don't kid yourself, what you did WAS gambling, whether money was involved or not. Had a parent chosen to contact the California authorities, you would have been slapped with a hefty fine, if not throw in jail for a night or two.
