How Rare is Too Rare??

Well they seem to be incredibly rare. At the pre-release I was at today only one person got one (me :) ) and it was Mudkip, and there had to be at least 4 boxes worth of packs handed out if each person got 10 packs total.

There were 16 players at the prerelease we went to and there was only 1 (Treeko). My son was fortunate to get his in the packs he won. but just imagine, just with your initial six and everyone getting their 4, that's 160 packs. And then you've got to count in the extra packs top 2 got for being top 2.

At my prerelease, there were 13 players and out of 130 packs there were only one shinning treeko!

Wow! Really that rare??

We pulled 2 Mudkips from our initial packs!!

I don't know how many were at the Houston prerelease, but I know a little boy got a Torchic.

I didn't see any Treeckos.

Anyone know the EX ratio for this set? I actually need to know th ratio for the Blister boxes. (24 packs) Hopefully someone knows.

I think they are suppost to be that rare, plus I think you only can have one shiney (of that pokemon)
in your deck, ie you can not have 4? I think the ratio ex is 4 a box, which is nice unlike
Hidden Legends which was 3, and I ended up getting only 2 in one of my boxs.

We had about sixty people in attendance, and a couple booster drafts afterwards. Six of the shinings were pulled out of the packs, and I don't think any were pulled in the post-tournament drafts.

So yeah, these things are, at BARE MINIMUM, two per CASE. At maximum, I bet they're one per case. These are sickeningly rare, and I predict them entering the triple digits in dollar value VERY soon!

Triple digits.
ROFL

At the Rockville prerelease, we had about 30-35 people and there were 5-6 Shinings pulled. I know there were at least 3 Mudkips and 2 Torchics.

BTW, My brother and I both got first place in our age groups, and the prize was... NOTHING. Woot. So much for erm 72 packs if it had been any older prerelease.

Ugh. This smacks of the "*whack* thank you sir, may I have another" approach to rarity. If Nintendo wants to create such rare cards, this is not the way. Those who I know who collect Pokemon, do so because it is reasonable. Once cards get too rare, it is almost disgusting to think of the money being spent on completing a collection, considering the only purposes are... erm... looking at the pretty pictures and an incredibly finicky store of value? That is, at best, lame, and at worst, could be viewed as evil. From the player's standpoint, the nice thing about Pokemon is even the card that are inflated to insane prices by demand tend to still be cheap enough that they are still withing the reach of someone from the middle class, and anyone that can afford a minor hobby can usually make a strong deck. Finally, something I don't see a lot of outside of Pokemon, is the player/collector, especially outside of the "Upper" class. one must be a tad selective: I myself am a player/collector. I will likely have to stop soon. I never collected first edition cards, as they were too pricey. I also had to give up on Reverse Holos, and that is fine too. But the excess plain holos in the last five sets makes it nearly impossible to get four copies of most cards for playing, let alone another copy for a collection. I confess, I have only completed two sets of the older cards, but I have a realistic possibility of completing most of my sets... or rather I did before WotC had to rush out their last three.

Anyway, if they want to do some sort of super-exclusive card, they need it to be a reprint of another card. Why? It's pretty hard to make 100% sure that there will never be a use for a card. I actually have a deck that really needs Tropical Winds. >_<

Edit: and in case anyone is thinking this is sour grapes, I pulled a Mudkip* and it saved my butt in the Pre-release (d'oh!).

yo physics! yeah, i was there too with squirrel, and one guy pulled 2 shinings. i dont think they are that rare in america...
but believe it or not drew, only one person pulled a rockets mewtwo ex (and i traded someone for it) :)

I don't think I'd mind so much if they were worth it playability wise. I can't see them as gamebreaking, so why make them that rare? Doesn't make sense to me, so I probably wouldn't go out of my way to aquire them. I doubt I'd give any away if I got one, either though.

I am dying to know how rare these, and the Here Comes Team Rocket really are.

We had 32 people, an afterdraft, extra pack support, and more, and I only saw 7-8 pulled in the whole room.

That is 7-8 in a little less than 600 packs, with all the after event drafting, staff support, and the like.

They may indeed be 1/100 packs

i like PUIs idea...
If the rare card is deck-worthy, then it will become extremely expensive to get a really good deck. If you can complete the whole set in 3-4 boxes and some trading, opening packs and collecting is less fun. I have really wanted a REALLY rare card in a US set, and I am happy that these cards have come (now i just need to buy a case =P)

We only got 1 copycat in our judge support boxes(2). Thankfully, we have lots from the earlier set.

procrastination_alley: I assume you mean the Parallel Foil version. I mean, I was running the two I pulled in the Pre-Release Tournament. ;)

I must confess to being somewhat scared. First, some people apparently want the TCG to degenerate to a Level where YGO can laugh at it for being "the rich brat's TCG"; where if a card is good, it's insanely rare. YGO never was quite that bad, and it has gotten better than it was. THat is because it became more like Pokemon. Please don't go the other way round.

I must confess I am getting worried. Pokemon seems to finally be settling into its pattern... but it's not the pattern that I had hoped for. I have a mixed reaction to the Holo-rarity cards being creatures unto themselves: it makes deck building tricky (at best) for those without a lot of cash (either dircetly or for the initial cards to trade). At the same time, it's nice for the set to lack "filler". THe real problem has been the amount of "exlusive" Holos. As a player/collector, if I plop $100 down for a box of cards, I feel entitled to at least having a legitimate (i.e. not due to packing errors) shot at pulling the complete set. At the very least, I should get the trading fodder I need to complete the set (again, barring things like mispackaging or abnormally un/lucky pulls.

Otaku... I 3 boxes worth and i got 0 copycat in the 1st 1 copycat in the 2nd and an amazing 5 in the 3rd... Yes 5!!! i was like omg i dont believe it...
Well i do think the shinings or whatever are ultra rare... out of a total of over 240 packs only 2 were pulled... so i think they are extremely rare... Personally i think there a 1 to a case and sometime when there are more than that a case is shorted a shinging or whatever... Since i think that Here Comes Team Rocket! is just as rare as the shinings or whatever....

I've been a hard-core collector since the very beginning. I've managed to collect every single card except the "Prerelease Raichu" - and I honestly believed that someday I would find one of those. I mean even the T206 Honus Wagner card trades hands every couple years. But the super rare cards (Samples, English V.S.) have been few and far between. There had been only a handful of cards that were worth $50.00 or more. Almost any new set including the parallel foils could be had for less than $200.00. Now there are the POP promos that are going for $50.00 each, the Shinings which no doubt will hit $150.00, and don't even get me started on the Worlds finalist cards. I considered buying the Worlds cards when they were on eBay, but then I realized they're going to do it again next year and the year after...
I am now two whole sets behind because I can't even keep up with the promos. The fact that there are cards out now that are realisitically unobtainable diminishes the fun greatly for me. After almost 5 years, I think my enthusiasm is now low enough to call it quits.
Let the Collector bashing begin...

I couldn't agree more. If you tell me I have to buy 9 boxes of cards to complete the set, then the rarity issue has gone too far. It is time to cut back on card buying, give up trying to put together complete sets, and simply buy a few boxes for deckbuilding.
