How about this...

Open Worlds.

Anybody who can get to Worlds can play in Worlds.

Just think about how awesome of an event that would be.

Would it diminish Nationals? I don't think so. Winning Nats would still be a huge accomplishment.

I've always felt like Worlds should be reserved for only a handful of the best players in the world. But can you imagine how much energy and excitement there would be with a tournament of 3000 (anybody else want to make a guess) players from all around the world? That would be unbelievable.

I admit that the logistics would be incredible, but I believe that PUI could pull this off.

Who's with me on this!?

No way. It would mean about 900 American players and 100 others, I'm sure. The US would also win every Worlds every single year, because just by sheer numbers the probability of an American winner would be ridiculously higher than anything else.

Open worlds would be cool if worlds was held somewhere else than the US. It would only attract many more people that dont have a too far way to travel.

Its kind of prestigious to play in an invite-only event. Being open to the whole world would take something away from what Worlds has become.

Nay.

It would ruin the tournament.

It would be Nationals part two.

Heck no.

You think it would be that close? I suspect that people would just ignore Nationals and it would be 1200-1300 Americans against the 100ish players from other countries.

No, no, no, no, no.

Yes, I've always wished to myself many a night, "Man, I WANT TO GET AN INVITE SO BADLY GRRRRRRR!"

Maybe I have thrown things over it, maybe my mom sent me to a shrink because of my obsession... but nonetheless, Worlds needs to be a lot of good players, all together. I don't think those people appreciate being donked by a Machamp from a newb player at all. A lot of times at Nats, I heard really good players all angry and stuff because really bad players from their state and such were top cutting when they missed the cut due to resistance.

At Worlds...IT DOESN'T MATTER! Everybody's a good player, everyone is "deserving," etc.

No way...

Do you know how good it feels to get an invite? When I got that email last year, I swear, I nearly fainted. The fact that they are inviting you to play in the "big" event is just amazing. Also, it's not really Worlds then. It's just Nationals except with people from other countries. In Worlds, almost everyone knows what they are doing. They're not some random person who just has a lot of luck with Machamp.

Worlds should be reserved for the best.
Think about it. Tom Roos (For example) could lose to some noob with no right to be amongst the best because he gets terrible draws and the noob gets dumbluck.
A while back in the YGO Nationals, an 11 year old won. With a deck that pretty much took cards from starter decks mashed together to make a deck with basic cards. I saw the deck list, it could easily be defeated. I was in shock how a little kid won Nationals. I know Nationals isn't as big as Worlds, but it was an open competition, and that means anyone can win. Someone might steal the title of Champion from someone who deserves it because of dumbluck.

To the topic starter- Is your username a reference to the Gorn Monster from Star Trek that Kirk fought in"Arena"?

I would be anti-open worlds.

However, I would like to see the number of invites increased in each division.

I think there are a lot of other improvements that could be made to World's and POP in general before I'd want to see it become an open tournament.

Good thread!

Heh, as much as I'd like this idea, the scales and logistics that it would create would easily make it just about impossible. It'd only take what, a week to hold completely lol.

10-20 posts in, and the "it's a level" accusations are already flying. But since this discussion isn't too far outside reality, I'll give our OP the benefit of the doubt.

Anyways, I don't see it mattering one way or another if Worlds was an open event.

Pros for a closed event:

*Prestige for the event - less players = more competitive, and more impressive
*Increased probability that the commercially-released decks are desirable (i.e., increased sales for secondary product)

Pros for an open event:

*Prestige for the game - bigger player base = bigger notoriety
*Perfect excuse to no longer give out swag bags.

...

first of all i must say that this thread is probably only a dream.in addition i must say that open worlds in the u.s would be absurd.as if we do not have enough u.s players in the worlds. the u.s players and the japanese players are the ones who are dominating at worlds.so the real question would be how can worlds really be worlds.on top of that yes it is very good if not incredible if you get an invite.but once again the question is how many people do really use their invite.i know at least 30 people who do not use their invite on a yearly basis.and again the question occurs.what should be done about it?i think that there should be an additional prize for the people who do not use their invite and miss their chance to play at worlds.whatever the reasons are even PUSA/PUI should recognize their effort.because every player who is at the top of his game in his country puts an effort into getting on top of his/her game that should be recognized.

so am i for open worlds?
no as long as worlds are such a narrow event
p.s
i apologize if i have hurt someone's feelings but that is just the way i think

Hold it in Europe once first. Then we'll talk. I'd like to see USA players win when Europe outnumbers them 10 to 1.
