Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Is Gyarados a Suicide Play for States?

When exactly are you going to pitch dark? At the beginning of the game? Ok, well then you can't lost zone anything until you break the trainer lock, unleashing gdos's set up. What I am talking about is starting a power lock a little later, after set up. Then, your lostzoning ability will be crippled. Is that when you're going to pitch dark? Then I'll just knock out the ghastly every turn making it awfully hard for you to build gengars.

As for devoluter, it would obviously hurt gdos. Just not as much as people think. Cursed drop then a surpise flash bite+devoluter would really hurt a gdos. But that requires you to build a lostgar with devoluter and crobats! You're sacrificing more important matchups for a deck that was never the bdif or your worse matchup, and that will be played less than ever.

LoTad, apparently you didn’t get the memo saying that sideboards could be used for States (only for LostGar though). That’s where everyone is fitting their…

  • miniature Cyrus Engine (2 Crobat, 4 Cyrus, 3 Turn)
  • 1-1/2-2 Palkia G X lines
  • Mime Jr/Chatot G gimmicks
  • 4 Seeker + 4 VS Seeker
  • PONTs!
  • AR Spiritombs
  • Deafen counters (Manectric G, Drifblim?, 1-1 Blaziken FB, Amnesia attacks…)
  • Toxicroak G’s + Energy Gains
  • Azelf X
  • 1-2 Devoluters
  • Mew primes + Machamp
  • Omastar MD
  • Sableye/Smeargle starters
  • etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Don't forget that, despite running all of these techs ,the Lostgar player will not suffer any consistency problems*. They will all be available when needed, plus they wil be Hurling >2 Pokemon by T2 '90% of the time'**

*'With a good list'
** 'If played correctly'

That's how we theorymon on the Gym!

I hope opposing lostgar player has such a bad start that he's forced to pitch dark ad nauseum. Sableye loves eating little gastlies for breakfast ;)

Pitch Dark'll work wonders against that SSU mesprit lock. Test against a lost gar that runs 1 Mesprit, 2 Crobat, 4 Cyrus, 3 Turn, 3 Twins, and 2 Devoluter and let me know how it goes. You'll find yourself making threads asking if Gdos is suicide for states.

That will make Lostgar inconsistant. But tell you what, my Gdos have the amazing discard engine and can go off T2 at the latest if a Pitchdark in effect. You think I'll use my trainers right away? No, in case of a Pitch dark start - i have alternatives - Regiice is sooo good in those suitations and yeah. Plus I have Warp Energies and Smeargles to boost myself up. Therefore, I know what I am doing and regarding that Lostgar lineup, I already 6-0 that. No need to beg for proof then cauz I stand by the fact Lostgar sucks. Peace out.

short answer:
no

long answer:
nooooooooooooooooo

If built correctly, gyarados can at least get to 50-50 with lostgar, if not more.

Do you think it's better now, with LostGar threat, to play Smeargle over Sableye or play Sableye with 1/2 Cyrus ?

^ Play all of the above: a mix of sableyes and smeargles, and if you have room, 1 or 2 cyrus like you said.

Where do you get that? It doesn't matter how many prizes are taken... if the opponent has six Pokémon in the Lost Zone and you play Lost World, you win. End of story.

BUt they have to have taken 4 prizes to get points though, did I comprehend the rule incorrectly?

IMO Gengar won't be played much. Dos should focus on beating the trainer lock, even if that means not always getting t1 dos.

2 mesprit
4 seeker
4 ssu
2 vs seeker
4 junk arms

thats 16. Seems like someone cant count

You're right - Gyarados never needs any of those cards when it's not in order to Psychic Bind. I can just see the headline now - "GYARADOS DECK PSYCHIC BINDS LUXCHOMP DECK FOR 16 TURNS STRAIGHT, WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP"

I honestly would be a little more hopeful with lost gar, but for the fact you have to win every game by putting 6 pokemon into the lost zone in 30M + 3 Turns. Seroiusly, have people played real matches in a timed format on this? It is really tough to do this consistently. If you don't put 6 in the lost zone, you lose. 5 lost zone, vs. 3 prizes, you still lose.

If I get my lock down first with my Mesprit it's over gdos is done and to top it off I run counter stadiums to your bts. It's not a good match up for the dos players. You should try testing against a better build. Gengar has too many things going right for it in that match up. Gdos is not a good play for states.

Other counter stadiums? Pretty sure that noone will run any other stadiums apart from Lost World and BTS in 99% of Gengar variant decks. And seriously, Lostgar is not going to win against Gyarados in a timed format. Trust me. And nothing else.

In fact, Gyarados have the best speed, power lock, discard engine and consistency, while Gengar only have the trainer lock - AND NOTHING ELSE.

Do yourself a favour, leave this thread alone for all of us, please Xicious.

Thank you. :nonono::nonono::nonono:

Playing Miasma Valley would sacrifice consistency by a good number of percentage... so yea... I figures he would refers to Miasma seeing that other stadiums doesnt really float the boat for Gengar variants.

States is about to get crazy...

Pokemon (26)
3-3-3 Gengar Prime
2 Uxie
2 Crobat G
1 Palkia G
1 Palkia G X
1 Azelf
1 Azelf X
1 Promocroak G
1 Manectric G
1 Mime Jr
1 Chatot G
1 Mesprit
1 Spiritomb AR
1 Spiritomb TR
1 Sableye SF
1 Smeargle CL

Trainers/Supporters/Stadiums (29)
4 Cyrus’s Conspiracy
2 Pokemon Collector
4 Seeker
2 Twins
2 PONT
1 Bebe’s Search
2 BTS
2 Miasma Valley
2 Lost World
3 Poketurn
1 Energy Gain
1 Devoluter
1 Pokemon Communication
1 VS Seeker
1 Pokedex

Energy (5)

3 Psychic Energy
2 Rainbow Energy

Now I know that on paper, this looks pretty bad. But the really amazing thing is, when I tested it out the other night, Luxchomp got a quick Weavile G out on me, so I was all “Twins for Promocroak G and Energy Gain, attach Psychic, and bam KO!” I didn’t get a single Gengar out that game, but that single turn was pretty awesome. You should’ve seen the face of my opponent. We then tested the DialgaChomp matchup – similar story with me getting the Manectric G out until my opponent realized how inconsistent my deck was. He went on to just destroy me with Garchomp C or an Uxie or something, but in my mind I counted it a victory since I was able to break the Deafen lock. Can’t argue with those results, now can you? :<

In other news, Gyarados is a pretty solid play for States in my opinion. Gotta work on your build though. :D

my Hurley (LostGar) runs a Honchkrow line to pull all your magikarps out of the discard, plus a Palkia G to send them to the lost zone, plus mime jr/chatot so I can take them off the top of your deck, plus a vileplume line so you can't use Junk arm to discard them, plus 4 Mesprit so you can't ever discard them with Regice, plus a Devolutor and 4 crobat G and 4 poketurn, and If all else fails I also run a 2-2 Luxray line with 2 lightning and 2 expert belt. oh and Miasma valley and I start with Absol Prime so you can't ever put a Magikarp down unless you remove my stadium which I'll super glue to the table so you can't.
I can get this all out turn 1 100% of the time, even under trainer lock and power lock.

COME AT ME BRO!
