Is the Level X Mechanic a Failure?

You know it'd be a whole different story if we could run 4 of the Lv. X along with 4 of the card....but then again that'd be just insane. The Level X system seems to be doing alright, it's by no means a failure though. It would be nice if we could Rare Candy to soandso Lv. X.

I like the Lv. Xs.

However, I'd like to see more GOOD Lv. X and less BAD Lv. Xs.

I also hate how some cards are just built to be leveled up. Am I the only one thinking that?

Really? Well, it instantly makes me assume that you go for a status with venusaur THEN flip for dialga... get tails and at least it isnt THAT bad, as you have still inflicted a status for your 'attack'.

Why would you need anti-level x cards. The majority of level Xs are terrible.

List of current Lv. Xs that SUCK:

Infernape Lv X
Torterra Lv X
Darkrai Lv X
Dialga Lv X
Electavire Lv X
Palkia Lv X
Honchkrow Lv X
Lucario Lv X
Glaceon Lv X
Garchomp Lv X
Porygon Z Lv X

List of decent Lv Xs:

Empoleon Lv X
Magmortar Lv X
Leafeon Lv X
Cressalia lv X

List of good Lv Xs

Gardevoir Lv X

That boggles my mind. Maybe you're saying that because so far, none of those are products of a good tier deck. But individually, as LV. X cards, I don't see that many of them at ALL are "terrible."

But going by your logic, I understand what you mean. HOWEVER, how in the world do you call Glaceon a terrible Lv. X (I don't think total negation of powers is anything to scoff at) ???

Here's how I look at LV.X's, based on BigChuck's format:

List of current Lv. Xs that SUCK:

Torterra Lv X
Darkrai Lv X
Dialga Lv X
Electavire Lv X
Honchkrow Lv X
Porygon Z Lv X
Empoleon Lv X~Possibly Good

List of decent Lv Xs:

Magmortar Lv X
Leafeon Lv X
Cressalia lv X
Glaceon Lv X
Lucario Lv X
Palkia Lv X
Infernape Lv X

List of good Lv Xs

Gardevoir Lv X
Garchomp Lv X

I basically agree with Chuck's list, although I would demote Cresselia to the "SUCK" category now that unown p has been released.

As someone said earlier in this thread, the playability of the level X's is based more on the playability of what you level them up from. Then on top of that they really have to add something that's worth running one less of the playable card they're leveling up. Garchomp isn't bad, but the level X doesn't really add much. Electivire doesn't work because you can only run 4 total and the DP and SW ones are just better.

I think the level X's are balanced. I prefer them the way they are now than to taking over the format. I disliked the period before HL was released where your deck absolutely had to contain an ex to be even close to competitive.

Errr....why would you DOWNgrade Cresselia because of Unown P? Those two work wonderfully together. If anything P should bump Cresselia up.

AMU anyone.

Cresselia is used in Arithmetic, Azelf, Mesprit and Uxie are used in AMU, Mewtwo shall be fairly used to counter AMU. Palkia is used in Empalkia, Dialga is used in Venusaur/Dialga, Darkrai can be used in any, dark deck.

So yeah.

Ok well Cresselia is the only one that is the most usfuly thing you said out of all that. As for the new ones coming out maybe they well be good, we have to see. And to the rest....... well, I think if you played them in nats you would be saying to yourself "There is always next year!"

Uhh yeah totally... 2nd Place masters used Empalkia in a nationals, it has won a state and a battle road.... Venusaur/Dialga came 3rd in some state (sorry can't remember which). Darkrai is the only one i can't think of it having any win.

it just goes to show how terrible those metagames are if Empoleon/Palkia is winning.

Pokemon is what it is. 1HKOs, trainermon, no counter-actions, unlimited drawing and hand size, etc.

I agree that LvX's are a bit too versatile. There are plenty of counters to EX's. There's virtually nothing good to counter LvX's other than the rule-of-4 that limits their excessive use.

By this 5th DP release, you'd expect some better counters.

Getting third in a state championship hardly qualifies ExcuseMeWhileIDisplayACompleteLackOfSkill.dec as "good."

In fact, it just doesn't.

^^ Sure, it doesn't qualify being 'good' but, the thing I answered to, was that these cards were NEVER used. The deck isn't very good, even I know that, but, it has been used, and it has placed in an event.

Wouldn't placing third with a not-very-good deck demonstrate a great deal of skill? It would be really unusual for somebody to lucksack themself that far into a State Championship, so either the deck is better than you imagine, or the player is exceptionally skillful. Heaven forbid that it be both!

Just want to point out to the people saying "Hey, let us candy to lvX!!!":

Roflmuch? Candy a Magmar to Magmortar LvX and.... Firepunch?? Candy a Piplup to Empoleon LvX and... Peck? Wa-hooo!

I actually think the new level-up mechanic has invigorated the environment. It is a new way to play cards, not exactly an evolution, but still it changes the Pokemon in play. The fact that you have to be active to level up, helps balance out the fact that you get to keep the attacks and powers of the Pokemon you're leveling up. Overall this was a good change for the game.
