No High Rollers in Pokemon

Your mistaken sir people didn't talk to them Judges talked to them Me in fact and clarified what was misspoke and reminded him coins are always allowed. Hence coins and the supplied dice were the only option for flipping.

BLiZz

So Judges arent people?
I understand that it got resolved but it was still just plain silly to say that we couldnt use ANY coins in the first place.
and it was double silly that we couldnt roll our own dice.
I had bought some BALLIN' dice, and i couldnt even roll them for any flip effects, let alone for the high roll.

for those people who think the people are complaining and they need to just deal, i dont think theyre complaining about the rule, as much as the princible.
if theyre going to start restricting stuff like this, that NEVER caused problems before, where does it stop?
soon we wont even be able to use dice as damage counters. we'll have to use the cardboard ones that come in deck boxes.
and we wont be able to use ANY forign language cards, or other cards that have been text altered, like DRE from Magma Aqua, or Stevens Advice from Hidden Legends.
I mean, C'mon, where does it stop!

and about ties taking up time with the high roll, how long exactly does it take to roll a dice? like literally 1 second.
even if you were to high roll and tie 5 times it only takes 10 seconds at MOST to break a tie. whaaa....
i think its funny when me and an opponent tie the high roll several times. we both laugh about it and its like we conect a bit more, thus making our game not quite as serious.

I started playing in August and at the start of the game the flip of the coin was normal, but some time after it was announced that High roll goes first, so I went along even though I preferred the coin flip of heads/tails.

LONG LIVE THE COIN FLIP!!!!

PS I have some coins for sale.

This actually came up at Worlds 2006, where the players could not agree on starting the game.

I took a coin out of my pocket, and directed one of the players to call heads or tails while the coin was in the air.

A judge can solve this in like 1 second.

The rule will take some getting used to, but, it is not a choice, it is a rule.

We will get used to it.

It stops when the rules are changed and approved, that is when.

Rules are are place for a reason, no matter if you like them or not.
I work in a Quality Control Lab that has to follow the rules decided by the FDA, which in my case are there to protect the public from harm. They have the power to change them for the better, but a long as we follow the rules established everything runs smoothly, everyone is on the same page. if you or your Company decides to break the rules the consequences have to be paid no matter if they are minor are serious. If you don't like the rules pay the penalty if you break them, get over it and carry on or don't play, your choice.

Where does it stop????

It's so simple.

first things first.
only sith deal in absolutes.

and i really dont think its so simple.
I would bet big bucks that these dumb rule changes are going to keep coming.
but i do see where youre coming from about it all.

as stated before: use of dice at ALL in this game is a concession on japan's part. they could just as easily turn around and declare no dice use at ALL...and you'd have to follow that rule, like it or not.

the saying is 'pick your battles'. is this the hill you want to die on?

I mean really, is it *SO* hard for all of you people (that have fussed about this) to just deal?? It's a rule and rules are to be followed. Here's a nice saying for you, " If the world (rules in this case) doesn't adapt to you, you adapt to it." That basically means, just because you don't like the rule, or you are used to another way of starting the game, YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT!
I actually find posts like this more annoying than the rule change.

This change still feels so surreal and random. Of all the things to change, this?

It was kind of funny explaining to my son that we were going to be doing heads / tails filps to see who goes first from now on in events. His grasp of who actually makes the rules and whatnot is a bit nebulous but still I found his incredulous reaction funny.

Him, "Why not?"
Me, "Because that's the way it is in the rulebook."
Him, "I hate the judge!"

He will deal with this and will no doubt barely even remember what high roll is in a few months. But his reaction is fairly understandable IMHO. Folks get mad when things they are used to change. Even small changes to things that directly impact things we like can produce big short term emotional responses. I'm sure that things will be fine in the long run, but I'm amazed that anyone is surprised by the outburst from various folks, including myself earlier here.

Instead of saying "deal with it" or "is this really a battle you want to die for" why not be more supportive of folks who are mad? In the case of my son, I nodded and told him that I understood the way he felt, I tried to explain a tiny bit about the way decisions like this get made (not by the local judges – and making this less of a personal thing in the process), and then I redirected his attention subtly as we started our game.

Actually helping folks "deal with it" or giving them some space to "deal with it" is usually more productive that just being confrontational and telling them, "DEAL WITH IT!" That direct confrontation just makes folks dig in their heals more and get madder.

by 'hill you want to die on', i mean: do players want to push and push high roll to the point japan says 'forget it, NO dice at ALL, coins ONLY'?

*Only coins would damage cards and sleeves.
Right, because the dice hitting the card would do so much less damage then a coin. *End Sarcasm*

You've never flipped a coin (like the monetary kind) on your cards? It leaves a dent on most of them.
Dice are much much lighter and I have never scene an instance where a die has damaged a card.

Also, I'm starting to remeber how I felt when they changed the trainers on first turn rule, and the no draw on first turn, ect. I felt the same way as I do about this. But that was game-changing. This is just stupid. Yet it is how I have done it, for like always.

I've been to worlds twice. Between both, I've played 8 players from all parts of the world (including Yamoto (is it Yamato?), and Koji Kando, both from Japan), and I can't recall an instance where high roll wasn't used to start the game. I remember taking note that the Japanese guys at the Yamoto-thon acctually rolled dice.

The Pokemon ones don't dent cards.

Dice indeed work just as well flipping a coin. Most people MIGHT have forgot how to flip a coin. And the fact that most people have already gotten used to rolling a die proves how far we've come since 04'.

Yikes, there's a scary thought. I guess I should be greatful that some league players were able to make the transition so easily. No one at my league complained about no more high roles, which is a good sign IMO.

1 thing to say:
LOL

why are we (and POP, firstable) wasting time and resource on a crappy thing like this?
It's ridiculous!

Exactly, you arn't really supposed to use a dime or quarter to flip. You're supposed to use the plastic ones in the theme decks.

I wasn't really aiming this at the people who don't like it, I understand that people don't like change, heck, I don't like this really. Now I've got to remember to Flip Heads/Tails instead of High Roll.

But I was aiming this at the people who say they will refuse to Flip Heads/Tails. The way I see it, if you're going to refuse to flip for heads/tails just because you are used to High Roll, how the heck did you even make it through the D&P rule changes? Like, no Trainer on your first turn, and all that.

But, I think that what most of these people don't realize is, every time you use any other method to determine who goes first, you are breaking the rules! And I don't find it hard in the slightest to learn to follow the rules, even if I am used to High Roll.

Will since we have to flip coins... can we at least get some decent ones... the pokemon are so horrible that they are the reason we started rolling dice can we at least agree on that?
