Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Pokemon 2010 VGC Support & Discussion

^ nice group/team selection. Seems to cover a lot of bases. As with a game that imo is a game of chess on steroids- (17 types, 300+moves, umpteen hundreds of combinations, ect.......) it is going to be one tuogh competition this year. Yes, we can asume what we think will be the "common team " threats will be, but there are a lot of factors that effect the game itself- the "uncertain" effects like crit hits, stat reduction/boosting- ect...
A lot of this comes down to skill, and knowing when to make the right plays and descisions. I personally enjoy the game in it's ability to provide so many choices. What I choose to be my team for the vgc will amount to nothing if I do not even get chosen to participate. So, now that I am done getting all "proffessor" on this, I look forward to hopefully getting selected, having a great battle- scratch that- greats BATTLES ( do not want to set myself up for a first round out!), haning out in a crowed of Pokemon fans like myself ( and no one to laugh at my Pokemon hat), make friends and enemies- I mean rivals- (truely), and do the best I can using my skills (even if I do lose in the first round)( allways someone bigger and better, so they say) I can at least say this: I will show up preparede with my pokies and the stratagie ( again, if I lose the first round, it does not mean that I stink- it means that my opponent came better prepaired or had a better stratagy)- and have fun! ( and a big bonus If I take 4th, 3rd, 2nd, or even 1st)
And even if I do not rank at all- there is always next year, States, Regionals, League- all in the name of fun and a good game.
Oh yeah- and hopefully be able to meet some of all yall at the vgc in person!

I haven't been on in awhile since States, but at States, there was a side Video game tournament, that my little brother enter. Everything was smooth until the last round, he was facing the junior champ of last years Regional Championships. The guy had a rain dance team, which I was thinking, oh my little brother just lost.... So still he played it out. The Champ starting out with a Kyogre and Ludicolo lead, my little brother with Gengar and Garchomp lead. Garchomp didn't stay for too long, took a 2 OHKO with Ice Beam from Ludi, cause Chomp had Yache Berry. I forgot what Ogre was doing, but Sludge Bomb took care of Ludi, when Chomp fainted, brought out Latios, and my little brother didn't know what would do more damage to an Ogre Grass Knot or Thunder. I plainly forgot as well, but I couldn't tell him what to do. So he went with Knot , and from what I remember OHKO the Kyogre. Next was Metagross and Palkia. Gengar then died as well as Latios. Then my little brother sent out Meta also. My little brother ended up winning from a Critical Hit with Earthquake, or Palkia would of Rein again. So here's the team he used.

Gengar @ Life Orb
Timid Nature
252SPA/252SPE/4HP
Shadow Ball
Thunderbolt
Focus Blast
Sludge Bomb

Garchomp @ Yache Berry
Adamant Nature
252ATK/252SPE/4HP
Earthquake
Dragon Claw
Fire Bite....Can't think of it ATM
Stone Edge

Latios @ Leftovers I know it's weird, but I had to get something quick, because Soul Dew wasn't allowed. All I had was Leftovers.
Timid Nature
252SPA/252SPE/4HP
Thunder
Grass Knot
Draco Meteor
Recover hasn't really helped with what I've been through

Metagross @Occa Berry
Adamant Nature
252ATK/252DEF or HP/4DEF or HP. Sorry I don't remember this one. Nor did I keep write it down anywhere.
Explosion
Bullet Punch
Earthquake
Thunderpunch

So tell me what you guys think. And if it was skill or just luck my brother won even though, I stated he won from a Critical Hit. I might let my brother use this again, in the Seattle Regionals.

And if anyone could help me on RNG abusing with IVs that would be great. Just PM me would ya. Thanks in advance. Cause I'm just going to need all the help I can from this, the masters are out of my league in this, and this year I want be able to compete on a one on one bases with this.

Prodigiosus Latios is uber. :p just maybe I should use more, but I kinda don't wanna touch my ubers though. Latios was an exception. It's one I caught in my Japanese HG, so I somehow I'm okay with training it , though the IV's are all bad.

I guess, but I can't really think of a team other than a Sun and Rain one. I just don't really like ubers besides Chomp which really isn't one.

And I've been the site, I just don't get it....

Hopefully with 5th gen they make some more pokies with auto weather that are not legendaries. Yeah, T-tar, Abomnasnow, and hippowdon have auto weather, but two auto sandstream for now? To set up a weather to benafit, ya got to sacrifice an attack or boost move ( maybe even a status infliction ) to hope that your pokie can even pull it off if not k'od or damaged severly. Weather teams will be the big thing, and it will come down to stat wars and move sets. If ya choose a weather team, expect that someone else has a weather plan that you can have trouble setting up your stratagy. With TR, speed is not a garuntee, and with abilities and hold items, ya can not be "over prepared". I think that getting a solid team with your stratagy practiced is the only thing anyone can realy do for this years VGC. Practice and getting the "bugs" out of your team, raising ( ev training ) and the move sets will be my main focus. So, if anyone is interested in getting in some practice battles for their VGC teams, check out the GL challenge thread. Hay, practice is practice, and the 'Gym has some of the best ds battlers around.

Pokemon VGC Information?

After five or so years of competetive pokemon play, I've taken a recent interest in the vgc and all it entails
I have a few questions regarding tournament play, and some foreign terms I have come across.
EVs and IVs.
What natures a good and why they are good.
The term RNG.
Which pokemon and moves are traditionally good and are commonly used...I have heard of A few such as Snorlax
Mewtwo, Smeargle, Metagross, and Kyogre. Explanations of these would be appreciated as well.

Please explain!
Thanx for all help.

Note: sorry for the fail typing. This is on my iPod.

EVs, IVs, and Natures are all explained here:

RNG or PRNG stands for (Pseudo)Random Number Generator
Explained here:
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pseudo-random_number_generation_in_Pokémon
For guides on how to use it, Google Pokemon RNG.

A short list of common Pokemon are:
(Pokemon that benefit from Rain Dance)Ludicolo, Vaporeon, Toxicroak, Kingdra
(Pokemon that benefit from Trick Room)Bronzong, Dusknoir, Machamp, Slowbro, Slowking, Snorlax, Abomasnow, Aggron,
(Pokemon that are just powerful) Garchomp, Zapdos, Metagross, Latios, Latias, Infernape, Lucario, Scizor, Gyarados, Gengar, *Mewtwo*, *Ho-Oh*, *Groudon*, *Kyogre*, *Rayquaza*, *Dialga*, *Palkia, *Giratina*
(The most common Set-Up Partners) Smeargle and Clefable
*-Means that you can only have 4 per team, and can only use 2 in the battle during VGCs.

Hope that helps.

well seatle is may second... the covention cent put it on their website, and knowing pokemon... it will most likely be in the same cities a week or two before and after seatle

as far as your brother...id say he got lucky, because an icebeam and a water spout should have ohko'd his garchomp and the second water spout should have ko'd your gengar in the rain...

Noob Questions: VGC Competitive Play

After posting on the VGC discussion and getting some very helpful information from Ultimetra (?) I realized I have a few more questions.

How are different, vague moves given to different Pokémon through breeding? How is this accomplished? Is it difficult? You only get 1 of TMs....

How can Smeargle learn "any" move? Including Dark Void?

What kinds of strategies are often seen and are the basis for team creation? Are there any "staple" Pokémon a team needs to do well?

Does "only 2" of the ubers on the list in the announcement mean you can have two Pokémon from that list, total, or only two of the same kind, but have 6 in your team?

Generally what is attendance like at events, and where do events normally take place? I assume this will be later announced.

Any site/guide recommendations/links would also be lovely.

Thanx-

Okay thanks, I kinda figured he got kinda lucky. I suppose I would need to learn RNG so I could make a pretty decent team for him, and myself. Only if I could figure it out though. Take out this team completely.

@Surskit Some TMs you can get more of one, but as the one I only have one of I tend to keep them. If you would want to pass down a move I think the male should know the move. It then passes moves that may be learned to the baby Pokemon. Some moves can only be learned with breeding and this technique, but I don't think it's used all to often. When I use a TM of something usually I can get it again, in the game, or I wouldn't need it anymore. I hope I kinda answered your question.

Smeargle can learn potentially anymove in the game. How I do it, is I double battle with random people in the game with the Rematch VS Seeker. Let the pokemon you want it's move copied from and attack with that move to your opponent or even Smeargle, and let Smeargle use Sketch on your Pokemon. Your other Pokemon would have to be faster, or it won't work. The move Sketch is then replaced with whatever move you copied.

For double battle, which is a mystery to me, there are a lot of good teams. Trick Rooms, now more Rain teams,Sandstorm. More odd combos. You would always want a sweeper though, the Pokemon that can quickly KO the opponent Pokemon. Walls are needed to stall, but in double battles stalls don't work as much as they so in singles IMO. Not great with team making.

You can only have 2 on the list, no more. You're using basically 4 Pokemon anyway, no point for a 6 team IMO.

I went last year to the one in Seattle and was fun, saw a bunch of people I usually see when I play TCG. I didn't get to play, because of er, the many people that showed up, for the master division. Which is 13 Up, are they serious. But still watching the battles was fun, and see how my brother did throughout. Last year he did pretty badly though. So, yeah. Really though there isn't much, but it's worth it to make the trip if you live far. Like ultimatedra last year, I heard. Even though I didn't play, I still got the Shiny Milotic. I would say the locations will be in the same place as last year. Only guessing since the one in Seattle is right at the Seattle Center again. Just hope I can play this time. They should have like 2 days one for Masters and Seniors. They should have 3 divisions in my opinion, but it's been like this for as long as I've known. A bit more organization would be nice too.

I feel like I should let my brother use a Rain Dance team.... Me I'll suffer from the fact that I'll go with something crazy like Explode all my Pokemon. :V

You heard correctly - well worth the drive. Best toast in the world.

Dont forget explosion teams...hail teams....but doubles is all strategy... singles is all about match up and switching and prediction. Doubles is strategy....come up with a team strategy and then pick the best pokemon to execute...
example, i like to disable pokemon so i have a 2 on 1 fight, so i always have a pokemon with fake out so i get in an extra attack. or i'll super fang one pokemon then use an attack that hits 2 pokemons so i can take one out while totally damaging the other

We really need some dates/locations for qualifiers. I need to start asking off for work soon. :X

I hope you read this Mike...:frown:

Also, Ultimate, thanks for the cool thread. Hope to see you at Worlds again. :)
