Chapter 10
"Guys, wake up." Stephen walked to each of his teammates and shook them violently, trying to awaken them.
"Wh-what?" Geraldo wondered, rubbing his eyes as he sat up.
"What's the emergency?" Hector asked with a yawn.
"Teachers." Stephen replied, peering out a small hole in the side of the building. Procter, Dan, Tatiana, and Sebastian were flying through the city on their flying Pokemon, scouting the area diligently.
"Teachers?! Are you serious?" David questioned.
"I think it goes without saying that they're here for us." Stephen added. "Anyone have any ideas about how we're going to get out of here?"
"I do. Quagsire, Pupitar! Dig!" Hector released his two ground type Pokemon, ordering them to dig an underground exit. The pair quickly destroyed a square of floor tiles and began to dig a deep hole into the ground. Geraldo sent out his Chewpir to help his friend's Pokemon dig faster.
"Teachers? Finally! I'm saved!" Nicholas exclaimed, dashing toward the door.
"Not so fast." Before the boy could reach the door, David's Scyther blocked the exit.
"Ponyta, attack!" Nicholas ordered. Ponyta and the other fire Pokemon had never returned to their Pokeballs, so Nicholas's Pokemon was ready to go, launching an Ember attack at the bug Pokemon. Scyther flapped its wings rapidly, and the incoming fire was blown back at Ponyta, nearly missing Nicholas.
"Woah, hey!" David shouted. "Let's not burn the building down!"
"Hey, that's a good idea!" Nicholas decided. "The teachers will see it, and it'll get rid of this nasty old abandoned building, too! Ponyta, Fire Spin!" Before Ponyta had time to follow its command, however, it found itself being wrapped by the blue serpentine form of Misteam.
"Honestly, kid, how stupid are you?" Stephen asked rhetorically. "Misteam, just knock it unconscious." Misteam began to squeeze tighter, and at the same time, launched a Water Gun, extinguishing a section of the horse's fiery mane. The weakened Pokemon quickly succumbed to its attacker's power, and fell to the ground, unconscious.
"Ponyta!" Nicholas shouted, running over to his defeated Pokemon.
"They're coming this way!" Stephen, still looking out the crack in the building, informed the rest of the group. Nicholas returned his Ponyta, David returned his Scyther, and Stephen returned his Houndour and Misteam to their Pokeballs.
"Alright, the hole's deep enough for us all to fit! Let's go!" The group quickly scurried down the hole, which was being expanded into a long tunnel even as they spoke. Nicholas was still trying to escape, so David, being incredibly strong from picking up the large sword on his back all of the time, picked the boy up as if he weighed less than a feather.
"They're going to see the hole!" Geraldo realized.
"Quagsire, seal it up!" Hector commanded. Quagsire turned around as the trainers passed it, and began to fling mud from the tunnel walls at the entrance. Soon, the hole in the ground was no more.
"Alright, everybody quiet, or they'll hear us!" Stephen warned. Naturally, Nicholas began to scream as loud as possible, so David cupped his hand over the boy's mouth. As Hector and Geraldo's Pokemon continued to dig, the trainers stood still, waiting for the teachers to enter and then exit the building.
"Hey, maybe they're in here!" Tatiana suggested, waving to the other faculty members. Her Meteoclips psychically moved the door to the side, and the trainers walked in alongside their flying Pokemon.
"Wow, this place was never a four-star hotel, but I remember it being a little better than this the last time we were here." Dan commented, remembering the time that the group of staff wielding trainers and Gym Leaders had battled the Elemental Six on the roof of the building. Michael had come to help them, disguised in a cloak, and had stolen all of Team Rocket's Pokemon after the battle.
"Yeah...there aren't even any floors up there!" Tatiana agreed, looking up to the roof.
"Skarlord, see if they're hiding in the rafters!" Dan commanded. The steel bird Pokemon flew up, thoroughly examining each floor of the building, including the spiral staircase. It also checked the rooftop, but found nothing there either.
"Nothing? Alright." Dan patted Skarlord on the head for a job well done. "Let's go." The group began to walk back out the doorway, but Sebastian stopped.
"What's wrong, Mr. Ebipese?" Mr. Procter inquired.
"Do you guys hear that?" Sebastian asked. "It sounds kind of like...a muffled scream, or something."
"No...I don't hear anything." Procter replied after several minutes of listening.
"Alright, maybe I'm just hearing things." Sebastian decided, and the group walked out the door, continuing their search of Mizaqua City.
"That was a close one." Stephen commented, having heard the conversation between the teachers.
"Good going, Nick, you almost got us caught." David smacked Nicholas over the head, releasing his hold on the boy's mouth.
"Well, we probably can't go to the Ice Caverns if they're in the area." Hector decided.
"We don't need to," Stephen responded, "Michael's in the Chasm Mountains."
"How do you know?" David asked skeptically.
"My Nightture," Stephen explained, "There are so few left in the world that they all share a telepathic bond. He can sense Michael's Duskarrion, and it's in the Chasm Mountains."
"How do you know that it's not just a wild one?" Hector inquired, but his tone was more one of concern and curiosity than skepticism.
"I just know," Stephen answered, "And besides, you said it yourself, it's not safe for us to go to the Ice Caverns."
"Alright," Hector agreed, "Let's go to the Chasm Mountains." The three ground type Pokemon continued to burrow through the ground, planning to surface just outside of Mizaqua City.
"So what are we supposed to be looking for?" Drake asked. The group of trainers had reached the inner ring of Olemenun, and had landed their flying Pokemon just outside of the Kaimone Shopping Centre, the closest area of human inhabitation to where they had crossed the sea.
"A group of five boys," Mrs. Searle answered, "All we know, other than their names, is that one has a Nightture, one has an Aerodactyl...one is a skilled computer hacker, and one carries a sword on his back."
"We'd know more if Sebastian was with our group." Mr. Lawson commented.
"So what are we doing here?" Emily wondered. "It's just a department store. They're not going to know anything!"
"They might," Mrs. Searle replied, "And it's as good a place as any to start." After returning their flying Pokemon to their Pokeballs, the group walked inside and approached the front desk.
"Good morning! How may I help you today?" The receptionist asked cheerfully.
"Has a group of five high school-aged boys walked in here?" Mr. Pennington inquired.
"No...I don't think so." The receptionist answered.
"Thanks anyways." Pennington responded, turning and heading back toward the door right away.
"Geeze, he's impatient." Drake commented once Pennington had exited the building.
"Yeah," Chris agreed, "You should try having him for a teacher! None of his students like his class."
"That's not very nice." Mrs. Searle, who had been listening to the conversation, interjected in an unserious tone. She began to laugh, indicating that she agreed with the students. "He doesn't get along with the other teachers too well, either."
"So, where to next?" Emily asked as the rest of the group exited the building.
"The Safari Zone is five minutes away," Mr. Pennington answered, "We should check there."
The four trainers and their new vampiric companion sat down on the green couches in the lobby of the Sevorg Research Institute, where they had spent the night. Their Pokemon had already gotten to work cleaning up the mess that Vampyro had left, but were very careful not to disturb Bethany's body.
"So what now?" Jeremy asked. "We beat Vampyro...so there's really nothing left to do on this island, is there?" A pained look began to grow on Matt's face.
"There's one thing." Elissa replied quickly, noticing Matt's expression.
"What do you want to do, Matt?" Bobby inquired. "Cremate it or bury it?"
"Bethany loved this island," Matt answered with a tear in his eye, "She would want to spend the rest of eternity as a part of it." He paused. "I want to scatter her ashes from the top of the highest mountain."
"I understand," Bobby responded, "If you want my fire Pokemon to..."
"No," Matt interrupted him, "My Pokemon will do it."
"Alright." Bobby replied.
"Wow, I haven't been here in so long, I had forgotten how big this place was." Dave commented as the group entered the vast expanse known as the Safari Zone. It was divided into five main areas; a plains area, a forest area, a mountainous area, a snowy area, and a lake area.
"We should split up to cover more ground in less time." Mr. Pennington suggested.
"Alright, there are ten of us here," Mrs. Searle pointed out, "Chey can come with me, Troy can go with Mr. Pennington, Rachael can go with Mr. Lawson, Drake can go with Dave, and Chris can go with Emily."
"Sounds good." Dave agreed. Chey and Mrs. Searle headed for the plains area, Troy and Mr. Pennington went to the forest, Rachael and Mr. Lawson walked toward the lake area, Drake and Dave headed toward the snow, and Chris and Emily set out for the mountains.
"So, you're probably wondering why I picked you to go with me, right?" Mrs. Searle asked Chey as the two of them patrolled the plains. "I just...forgive me for being nosy, but whatever happened between you and Stephen...I just want to help."
"It's alright," Chey replied politely, "I don't mind. I trust you." She paused. "A little while before you came to Emily's house, we were all at a party."
"Troy's?" Mrs. Searle guessed.
"Yeah," Chey answered, "Anyways...Stephen got drunk, and he...he tried to take me upstairs..." Tears began to well up in her eyes.
"Oh, Chey, I'm so sorry..." Mrs. Searle immediatly responded. "Did he hurt you?"
"No...my Eyequus managed to stop him," Chey replied, wiping the tears away, "And then I knocked him unconscious, and me and Emily and Chris left the party."
"Chey...I'm so sorry..." Mrs. Searle reiterated.
"It's okay." Chey responded. "He had been acting kinda weird for a while...I had been considering breaking up with him for about a month or so before the party."
"He was acting weird?" Mrs. Searle inquired. "How so?"
"I can't really explain it," Chey answered, "He just...wasn't himself. He was more and more violent than usual...I guess it all started around the time that his Vuldusk evolved." Mrs. Searle's eyes widened as she realized the reason for Stephen's behavior.
"Oh no." Mrs. Searle whipped out her cell phone, quickly dialing the other teachers.
"What is it? Did you find them?" Mr. Lawson asked.
"George, we have a problem." Mrs. Searle informed his coworker.
"What do you mean?" Mr. Lawson wondered.
"If you remember, one of the boys had a Nightture," Mrs. Searle explained, "And it's got him under its control."
"Are you sure?" Mr. Lawson questioned.
"I'm positive." Mrs. Searle confirmed.
"Call Procter," Mr. Lawson instructed her, "I'll call Jay."
"Right." Mrs. Searle agreed, hanging up her phone.
"The boy's under the influence of a Nightture?!" Mr. Pennington asked in disbelief. "You've got to be kidding me! There haven't been any reported cases of that in fifteen years!"
"Now's my chance," Troy thought to himself, "The old man's distracted by his phone." Without warning, the boy bolted away from the teacher, agilely plunging into the forest.
"Hey! What the heck?" Pennington exclaimed. "I'll have to call you back, George." He hung up his cell phone and released a sleek, brown and white Linoone from a Pokeball on his belt.
"Go get him, Linoone!" He instructed.
"Lin, Linoone!" Linoone raised its nose, sniffing the air. It immediately began dashing in the direction that Troy had run at an incredible speed. In no time, it was closing in on the boy.
"What?" Troy wondered, turning to see his pursuer. "Crap!" He began to think as he continued to run frantically. "Wait...of course! Linoone can only run in straight lines!" He immediately turned in front of a large tree. Linoone was moving so fast that it was unable to stop in time, and crashed into the tree.
"Hah! Yes!" Troy exclaimed as he looked back to see the Linoone's crash. When he turned his head back around, he was shocked to see a Pidgeot right in front of him. The boy fell back in surprise, landing on the bare ground.
"Pidgeot!" Pidgeot cried, flapping its wings victoriously. Mr. Pennington and his Linoone walked up behind Troy, a smirk on the former's face.
"Did you really think you were going to outsmart me, kid?" Pennington asked. "Even you should know better than that." He threw a Pokeball into the air, releasing the large blue mass of vines known as Tangrowth. Its viny arms stretched out and wrapped around Troy, preventing him from escaping. The powerful Pokemon lifted the boy above its head as it, its trainer, and the rest of its trainer's Pokemon began to walk back in the direction from which they had come.
"And here we are." Stephen announced as the flying Pokemon approached their destination. The peaks of the highest mountains became visible even in the heavy fog, and the group carefully located a flat surface on which to land.
"Aerodactyl, Defog!" Geraldo commanded. Aerodactyl began to flap its wings rapidly, and the fog in the area cleared. There were a few trees and large rocks in the circular area of flat rock, and it was surrounded by mountains. The only exit was a large, gaping entrance to the system of caves running through the Chasm Mountains.
"So he's somewhere in there?" David asked.
"Yeah." Stephen confirmed.
"Then let's go." Hector interjected. The trainers returned their flying Pokemon to their Pokeballs and walked into the cave. It was very dark, and nothing was visisble, not even in the immediate area.
"Magneton, Flash!" Hector released his electric Pokemon, and it began to glow with electricity. The glow brightened, and soon, the trainers could see as far as twenty feet away. There was only one path, so they followed it for quite a while.
"Aren't these caves surprised to be harder to navigate than this?" David inquired. "We haven't seen any forks in the path, or anything. This can't be right."
"Well, that's because we're not walking through a cave," Nicholas responded, "We're walking through a Tunnelurm trail. We have been the entire time."
"What?!" David exclaimed. "Why didn't you tell us that?"
"You didn't ask." Nicholas replied with a smirk.
"Well, as long as it doesn't come back this way, we're fine." Geraldo commented. Suddenly, a monstrous roar echoed through the cave.
"That's just great." David pulled two Pokeballs off of his belt and waited to see what direction the beast would come from. The group slowly turned around to see the large white worm with its mouth open, drooling.
"Scyther, Gallade, go!" David threw the two Pokeballs into the air, and the green and white fighting type and the bug with blade arms appeared. "Let's go!" He removed his own sword from its sheath, and he rushed forward alongside his Pokemon, just as much a part of the fight as them.
"What does he think he's doing?!" Nicholas wondered. "He'll get himself killed!" David and his Pokemon jumped into the air and descended upon the Tunnelurm, their blades drawn. With a disgusting squelch, the blades sliced through the large Pokemon like butter. The Pokemon fell apart into several pieces, and David and his Pokemon stood at the center of the mess.
"Was that really necessary?" Hector asked rhetorically, unimpressed and slightly disgusted.
"Don't preach to me, nerd." David replied with a hint of sarcasm as he returned his Pokemon to their Pokeballs. As he stepped out of the corpse, the other trainers noticed that the boy didn't have a single splotch of blood on him. In fact, there was no blood on the ground, either; the boy and his Pokemon's swordsmanship was so great that they had cut the Tunnelurm to pieces without tearing through a single vein or artery.
"So what now?" Geraldo questioned. "We've been in a Tunnelurm trail the entire time. We need to find an actual entrance to the cavern system."
"No you don't." An unfamiliar voice came from behind. The group turned to see a girl about Hector's age with blonde ponytails. She wore blue overalls, a white shirt, brown boots, and a brown cowboy hat, and held a Pokeball in one hand and a lasso in the other. There was no mistaking it, she was one of the farmer-trainers of Sinnoh's Solaceon City. Next to her stood the majestic form of a Luxray, which appeared to be her source of light.
"And just who might you be?" Hector inquired.
"I'm Katie, of Solaceon City!" The girl replied. "And if anyone finds Michael, it's gonna be me!"
"You? You're looking for Michael?" Hector asked, surprised. "Why would some farmer from Sinnoh be looking for the leader of Team Rocket?"
"That's none of your business!" Katie shouted. "Now, prepare to fight!"
"You're going to fight all of us? Are you crazy?" Stephen was shocked by the girl's bold proclamation.
"I'm one of the strongest trainers in all of Sinnoh! I beat Team Galaxy, and I can surely beat you!"
"It's your funeral." David replied, sending out his Zangoose, Seviper, Farfetch'd, Scyther, Gallade, and Lucario.
"Y-You're actually going to fight her?" Geraldo asked, as if surprised that David was accepting the girl's challenge.
"You're not?" David responded, equally surprised that Geraldo wasn't. "It's five against one! Come on, that's the easiest battle I've ever heard of!"
"Don't be so sure." Katie threw the rest of her Pokeballs into the air, and from them came Infernape, the fire monkey; Empoleon, the steel penguin; Torterra, the tortoise with mountains on its back; Staraptor, the hawk; and Garchomp, the ground dragon with a fin on its back.
"Those guys look pretty strong..." Nicholas commented.
"Guys? Don't offend them!" Katie responded. "All of my Pokemon are female, the superior gender!"
"Oh, so she's a misandrist, too. How didn't we see that one coming?" Hector sighed, rolling his eyes. "Alright, guys, let's help David out." He threw all of his Pokeballs into the air, releasing his entire team.
"Alright, if you say so..." Geraldo sent out his six Pokemon to join Hector's and David's. Stephen followed suit, but Nicholas did not.
"Send out your Pokemon, Nick!" David exclaimed.
"Are you kidding me? I'm not helping you," Nicholas replied, "I hope you guys lose."
"Ignorant little..."
"If you boys aren't going to start attacking, then I will!" Katie interrupted. All six of her Pokemon rushed forward and launched powerful attacks of their own element. Before the male trainers had time to react, all of their Pokemon were on the ground, defeated.
"Well, looks like she was as strong as she said she was." Hector said nonchalantly.
"How the heck did she do that?!" David yelled.
"Hah! She beat you guys bad!" Nicholas mocked.
"Shut up." David replied as he drew his sword.
"What are you going to do, attack me with that thing?" Katie asked. "My Pokemon will tear you to pieces before you even take a step."
"Bring it on." David said overconfidently. He began to charge forward, sword in hand, preparing to strike the girl.
"Staraptor, tear off his head!" Katie ordered. Staraptor dove toward the oncoming man with the sword, travelling much faster than the boy it was targetting.
Crackle!
Staraptor fell to the ground, its feathers singed by a bolt of lightning. Katie turned to see the bright yellow form of Elketric, the lightning deer Pokemon. Next to it stood Tyzer, the icy white tiger Pokemon, and Tyrnferno, the large red tyrannosaurus Pokemon with a ring of fire around its tail.
"What the?" Katie wondered, surprised by the entrance of the new Pokemon.
"Tyrn!" Tyrnferno bellowed.
"Wild Pokemon?" Stephen suggested.
"Everyone, attack!" Katie commanded. Her six Pokemon dashed toward the three wild Pokemon, launching various attacks. The three Pokemon easily dodged every attack, and launched attacks of their own. With a single Fire Blast, Thunder, and Blizzard, all six of Katie's Pokemon were defeated.
"What? How's that possible?!" Katie exclaimed, shocked.
"Those things are way too strong to be wild Pokemon." Hector realized.
"But who's their trainer?" Nicholas asked.
"Absolutely pitiful. You couldn't even defeat these weaklings." An unknown male voice resonated throughout the cave. With Magneton and Luxray down for the count, the group of trainers could only see as far as the dim glow of the electricity flowing between Elketric's antlers allowed. Out of the shadows stepped a man with an almost maniacal grin on his face. He held an object in his hand, but it was still cloaked in the darkness, and was unidentifiable.
"You're...!"
