Pokemon Is DEAD!

I think he's right.

He's showing cards like Dark Slowbro and Base Clefairy and talking about sell-ability - yeah, try to sell those for anything.

And technically he's correct that fewer kids are playing the game - fewer than when it was a fad. No game can keep up numbers like that. But where does Pokemon rank now with the player base? 2nd or 3rd behind Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh?

He doesn't know what he's talking about when he says the game is geared to the 6/7-11/12 year old range though.

From this guy's perspective (the ability for him to sell cards and make money) I'm sure he's spot on though. He just hasn't figured out how to make money on this game. He's stuck with his sports card paradigm and can't get out of it.

This game isn't about $200 dollar rare cards. If someone really needs cards, they can get them with a little work. If this game were about selling insanely rare cards no kid would want to play it because they'd never be able to obtain cards for their decks or be able to complete sets. It's definitely different, but I think it's better. We don't want to be YGO or MTG.

To a certain extent, what this guy is saying isn't way off. In comparison to other Card games/Sports cards, Pokemon cards aren't worth squat, in terms of selling price. Think about it, with exception to when things immediately hit the market, a good consistent value for a Pokemon card is $30-40, with some exception to things like Wailord ex, Charizard ex, a No. 1 Trainer card, or something like that. However, an average value for the higher end Yugioh cards, for instance, is about $150, 3-5 times the value! Don't get me wrong, I love Pokemon, but if you're in a game to make money, you've picked the wrong game (unless you're Ness...)

Ah, but the "higher end Yu-Gi-Oh! cards" of which you speak are only more valuable because they are harder to consistently pull from packs than Pokémon cards. Pokémon could have $150 cards too if they made the pull rate something like every three boxes. In any case, Yu-Gi-Oh! is dying out faster than Pokémon. I don't really feel like listing my criteria, but if anyone's interested, just ask...

If you were seriously dumb enough to stockpile old cards like Base Charizard back in the late 90s and expected them to rise in value like baseball cards, you are an idiot...

That aside, 1 Star ratings all around for that video.

I gotta admit itw as a funny video and this guy must of made this before the re boom of D+P. This shows that not every sports card retailer see the popularity of this game,. I used to live close to a retailer who did what this guy did. OVERVALUED the old sets and dident live in the now of pokemon. He since retired and moved on but its the idea of retailers to look in the past and not see the now of the game.

Pokemon isent as strong as it once was but its FAR from dead. I hope it does get stronger as time passes.

The only way to make money off of this game is to either a) win cards and sell them or b) buy cards, trade them for viable metagame cards and sell them. If you plan on buying a box and selling everything you get for $150-200 you're in for a big surprise.

This is just basic supply/demand stuff too. MTG is like an oxymoron within the study of econ.

If I see Pokemon Cards at the dollar store... then it would be dead... so far... no luck.

Then you are 7 or so years too late =/ Back in 2001 (during the WotC days), there was a discount store that I know sold genuine Pokemon packs for $1 each or $35 a box.

Why did he say "Pokemon cards were designed for kids to have fun with", when most people who play pokemon cards are 15+.

Maybe he is still living in the 1990s

Five words:
Eight print runs of Base
Two more words. "Who cares?"
We all know and as shown by tourney's such as Cities, State, Nats, and Worlds. We know that Pokemon IS NOT dead. People are selling cards everyday and people buying them (myself included on occasion).

Exactly why did you feel like being rude to Pokepop? Just wondering.

The movie was indeed funny. He obviously bases his knowledge off how much of stuff he sells.

I posted a comment. This guy is way off. Glad the only people where I live who think like this are SOME Yu-Gi-Oh players, BUT they are really nice and understand about values of the cards and they also started playing Pokemon. Best and nicest Yu-Gi-Oh players I've ever met.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Those sets were a waste and I think Nintendo realized the mistakes that WotC made, because they haven't done it since.

There is another video from the same guy (about the most valuable pokemon card) and he says Charizard (from base set of course) do you agree with his statement? :"

Of course not...Charizard ex or Championship Arena... or any of those Championship Japanese Cards or Pre-Release Raichu would be worth more than that.....

Yeah the Pokemon TCG is still alive, If it wasn't for the Diamond & Pearl expansions I don't think this game would've made as huge of a comeback as it has already. There's already a 5th Generation of Pokemon in the works and more expansions are on the rise as we speak so that's something to really look forward to.

It's the 3rd best selling TCG right now next to Magic and YGO so that already tells you that the game is still doing quite well. Also I like how POP/PUI is reprinting old school cards in the newer sets and it's starting to become more of a trend with the game now, first Charizard (Base Set) got reprinted in Stormfront and now in the next set after Stormfront (Galactic's Conquest in Japan) the Haymaker deck Pokemon are getting reprinted as well, Scyther, Hitmonchan, and Electabuzz.

My current regret in the Pokemon TCG right now is not having the chance to get my Grass Badge at my League cause I already won my Fire Badge and Water Season is next weekend or after I believe, I guess it varies depending on the area though. Now that I think about it, what happens when you win all your badges anyway and I don't mean to sound like a noob when saying this either...
