Sitting out Nats a serious discussion

I really wish it wasn't even an option for people to consider sitting out just because they had more of an opportunity than someone like me to go to events. I know I'd personally be pretty upset if I do well at Nats (like I have at EVERY event this year) and don't get an invite over someone who stayed in their area ALL year and beat up on everyone but the best plyaers in the U.S. How is that fair? Seriously, put yourself in my position, and then think about it.

I look at it differently on the people not playing Nationals. If they did great enough the rest of the year then that is fine with me. The fact the tournaments do not have a big difference in points is the only bad thing there. If points at Nationals were double at least States then who would really be safe to sit? People who had played some in other tournaments and then Nationals probably would have a better chance to overcome the points deficit and take places away from people. I don't see anything wrong with people who play more getting some advantages to doing so. Nationals though should be a huge deal and should have a greater impact on everything and so I can see how being able to not play Nationals because of the lead would diminish Nationals for some.

Anybody up there should feel good about their chances at Nationals. The question shouldn't be "should I sit out Nats?", but rather, what deck to play? If you're up there, even in Masters, you should be playing in Nationals. Besides, anybody that is on the bubble can't afford to sit out, and if you're afraid of playing in Nationals because you might lose, what does that say about your Worlds chances? Ok, you get a trip to Worlds, to Hawaii, and then you bomb. Also, anybody who won a States or Regional should not even be considering sitting out Nats, I don't care who you are. You have FREE MONEY/TRIP to the biggest event of the year in the U.S. Why in the WORLD would you sit out and not play in it? There is $5,000 for 1st prize at Nationals, do people seem to forget how hard it is to money at Worlds? You play in Nationals, under any circumstance.

chad speaks the truth!

Well, going into this weekend. I wasnt planning on dropping in Nationals and anyone who knows me knows I never drop, however, if I am 6-0 or 7-0 or something like that I may drop since I expect to be in the 1940s or so now. I mean after a 12-1 weekend, I should be up there now. :thumb:

Consider this hypothetical situation...

The Patriots are 15-0. A win in the final game would equal the only other perfect season in the NFL.

Instead of sitting Brady (as many teams sit their starting QBs once they have their play positions locked), they decide to play for number 16.

Not only do they not win their 16th game, but Tom Brady gets hurt in the process.

As a result, they lose in the 2nd round of the playoffs to the Colts who go on to win the Super Bowl.

There is no honor for the Patriots. It was a meaningless game to them. And they shot themselves in the foot.

While Nationals is far from meaningless, it is of far less importance than Worlds.

But REMEMBER THIS!

Some from this years Nationals will be a "cautionary tale." Next year, as we're having this same discussion, someone will say "I want to play at Nationals, but I'm afraid of losing my ranking. Remember what happened to <INSERT YOUR NAME HERE>."

Think about it. This could be you.

Flip the teams around to be more realistic.

If you have such a good rating by playing well then you should have no doubt in playing as good as you can. If you're that good then you will do good regardless. You gotta take chances to suceed in this game....

Yeah, but there's this thing called a Donk. Particuarly when a new guy makes the top cut and then FTKOs you with Mario or something.

A new guy?

If he's good enough to go 6-3,7-2, or 8-1 then he can't be a donk. That's how the game is played with luck and it is a risk you have to take...

Would you rather be called National Champion or T32 at Worlds.

Yeah.

In your experts guys opinions, what is a safe ranking to sit on to get a trip if you intended to skip Nationals?

The only problem is this... in every game, somebody has to lose.

And you may lose to somebody with far fewer points (Martin, for example, will have 1600 at the start of the day?) or you may lose to a friend of equal caliber in the 2nd round. Who knows. But somebody has to lose.

At the end of the day, there will be people who will have (a) started the day with a ranking that would have been high enough to make the trip to Hawaii for the World Championship and (b) lost enough games to where they will be reading about the World Championship in Hawaii on the Internets. It is going to happen.

And that person won't say "Well, I'd rather not be at Worlds anyway. I really wanted to make Nationals my big year-end event." No, they won't be saying that.

Ok after attending 6 Battle Roads this season and having seen so many Donk wins and experienced both sides of the coin myself, I have come to the conclusion that if Pokemon continues to have such a ratings structure, then the Swiss tournament structure should be changed to the best 2/3 games/1 Hr. time limit. This should seriously decrease the Donk win/loss and should determine the better player.

Other TCG's do the best 2/3 Swiss 1 Hr. game time limit. Pokemon should too.

I think any player with a 2000+ rating playing in Nationals is putting a lot of pressure on themselves to do really really well. If they don't top cut, or perhaps even top16 they risk losing their rating invite. When you keep in mind that the invitations awarded to top4 are only another 2 rounds away, it looks like a pretty tall order for you to really expect to maintain your invite-range rating without just getting top4 at Nationals.

If you went went a best 2/3, 1 hr match in swiss at all events....would you accept smaller SEFs?? You have to remember, many venues have time constraints on them and many 6-9 yr olds have time limits too!

Keith,

You are right, longer battles for younger kids is not good but yes I would accept the SEF's being smaller.

Maybe invoke this at States and above where the Competetive part of the fun game is in dominance.
