Skipping Nationals vs. Ranking

This is a ridiculous post, why would you not play? The only reason to avoid nationals is if you are honest with yourself and think you will do poorly. (OR you don't have the money for both, which you said is not the case)
Just cause u have the money doesn't mean u hafta spend it. I already decided I'm not going I just don't feel the need to spend the money on 2 big events. If I don't get an invite oh well so be it.

If you don't get an invite, then go to worlds anyways, try to grind in. And if you don't make it, it is still really really fun. The main event is the least of the fun (if you don't do well), the side events are amazing.

I'm 1850 but since I won a trip to Nationals and I am a former National Champion I don't think I would consider a sit out, or even a 3-0 drop for that matter. It's the toughest event of the year yes, but the feeling of winning it is unbeatable! I can almost guaranteed you 1853 might oust you from the invite so I'd strongly reccomend you reconsider as a lot of the people right below you are attending US Nationals and have an easy opportunity to pass you with just a few wins.

Martin, I haven't won a United States National Championship. But I've been close enough to taste it. And I know how great it would be to be sitting at that final table again and just get one more shot at it. So do I know the feeling of sitting at that final table. But like you I also know the feeling of seeing your name on that Worlds invite sheet. And walking into that room, it kind of has that sureal fealing to it. I think the desecion to play or sit out shouldn't be made lightly and any player in this situation should strongly think about it. Becuase at the end of the day your the one who has to live with the outcome good or bad.

I haven't gotten past the first round in top cut in 4 tries at both Nationals and Worlds, but I will say two things. Having your invite and being able to play in Worlds makes you feel on top of the world as you know that you made it in and not many players did. Making top cup makes you feel even more like this and I can only guess that making it that far would feel surreal and that you feel that nothing can touch you if you catch my drift. I am sure that no matter what, Top Cutting, Playing in Worlds, or making it the the Finals, that they all feel awesome. I think that is a hard choice to drop or not, I think that it makes it very hard if you haven't made Worlds before. If you have I think it is not as hard, but still a hard choice.

If you're confident in your play you should have no worries. Personally, I think playing at nats should be a requirement to play at worlds.
I remember when players couldn't wait to play in an event like this. So sad..........

^Well, I guess they're talking Masters here, which has far more people and is probably much harder to win.

Not dissing Tristan becuase that kids an amazing player. But yes masters is usually 2-3-4x the size of Juniors. And much harder to win. I think it would be very interesting to see how Tristan would do in masters though I think he could do alot more than hold his own.

Well, with a week before nationals, I bet what I'll say won't do much for you one way or another, buuuut take it for what it's worth:

Having been in that situation more than once, I'd say that you should just do what lines up most with what you want out of things.

At Nats '07, I really wanted to earn the Hawaii trip...But I also wanted to win Nationals. So what did I do? Play until I felt like I had a real chance of losing the trip.

At Nats '08, since there was no trip attached to the invite, I decided that dropping or sitting out on an opportunity at winning five grand, some decently-neat prizes, and eternal Pokeyman glory was worth more.

So...Given how "risky" your ranking is right now, I'd say that you might find this to be a very bad ex post mistake. However, if you get the invite, then you'll do what you've been wanting to do for over five years: get a worlds invite.

All I have to say beyond that is "good luck," because I'll probably take your invite by shooting up in the rankings after I win. :D

07, I still love that. You go 0-1 and drop and then your first round opponent WINS the event. I found that quite entertaining that you just happened to face Fulop and he went on to win the event.

Tristan is definitely the second best Junior at Nationals of all time....

There is one with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophy at home.

Still one of the greatest in history I would say :thumb:

But, yeah, the repeat factor at Nats in the Masters Division is, well, um, insane.

Vince

Seena Ghaziaskar is the closest to do it so far, with a 1st and T4 in 2005 and 2006. Tom Dolezal also got 2nd and T4 in those two years, along with 3 other top cuts.

Drew ,that was great!
What is it with Texas players? Do they not have the heart to put it on the line?
I know one thing, there will be no" legal stalling" at nats!
Ket,I love ya,but you got to07 by winning a bunch of 32K BR against players even I beat.
Kyle, man up and prove you belong at worlds.
This thread makes me sick.

Kettler earned it, it didn't matter if it was Battle Roads, he still went 23-0.
and part of it was winning Regionals. =)

Wow really ur gonna bring up the whole legal stalling thing again? Ur really ticking me off with ur attitude. Ur whole post was completely offensive immature and uncalled for. Trust me if I get my invite to worlds by skipping Nats I will be very proud cause I earned it. So what if I skip out Nats? My life doesn't revolve around pokemon and to me the expense risk and time gone into a trip to play in st louis is more than I want to deal with right now. Don't accuse me or any other Texas player of not having the heart cause u as well as anybody else knows that's not the case. And just drop the legal stalling thing it's over 2 years old and what's done is done regardless of who's right and who's wrong.

Boy,if you want to be a world champ, don't run.
You posted about the "legal stalling" thing when I told you not to.
Ket was nowhere in the rankings until spring BR's that year. I still think ket is a good player, what if he played the rest of nats that year considering he lost that rs 1 to the player who won it all? Yes it does matter how rankings were got when that year BR's were 32 k ,now they are 4k.........he could not do that this year.
Earn it at nats!
Look at the top rankings, how many of them will stay home to protect their rankings? How many posted this lame post? Your post in offenesive to every player. If you don't live pokemans, why did you post this to begin with? Why would you care? You would be like me and not go to nats because you got more important things to do. But if you are playing to be the best in the world, then don't run. Or do you just want to put in your sig. that you"played in worlds 2009"?
Kid, you know nothing. Play at nats, if you can't make it there, you don't belong at worlds.
Texas........you want to prove you got heart, then the highest players should be playing at nats. I don't see anyone else posting this kind of lame garbage.........or playing one round and dropping!
You want to be the best........play and beat the best. If you can't do that, stay home where you belong.

There is no One True Path to Worlds with all others being Heresy.

Nationals is the big event open to everyone. Nationals will have lots of rounds and decide more than just the 8 places at worlds allocated to the top finishers in each age group.

I won't think more or less of a player because they risked it all at Nationals or sat out. But whatever decision that player makes they need to be content with it and not dwell in the land of if-only should things not go as they expect.

So Mate, I'm assuming you will not accept a bid to World's unless you win at Nationals? So do you not participate in rankings?
What does it have to do with Texas?

It's like being the Nascar Champion versus the Formula 1 champ AKA The World Champion!

Cheers

Ur ridiculous and completely illogical. Ur post proves nothing but ignorance. I'm on my iPhone so I will post my side of this debate later.

This is pretty much sums it up. Ian couldn't of said it better. :thumb:
