UK Nationals 2006 Thread 10 June 2006

Surely there is only one that is fit for the job of HJ, and that of course is the great god Zarg!! Wow!!, sorry about that, what was the alcohol content in that last can of lager?! As said before there will be three HJ's for each age group, with Carl probably appointing an overall HJ in case of any disputes that the individual HJ can't solve. In that case it has to be Ian F for his overall experience!

FWIW my role last year was more like Senior Judge in the 15+ division. Carl retained the decision on anything above a warning. I expect he'll do the same this year.

Ian don't put yourself down. Everyone is praising you.

Yah i agree, Last year was ridiculous in terms of the HJ not getting the overall say or whatever. I think players abused this knowing leniency would be granted. I empathise with the situation Ian is in but have to re-emphisise my point in that he is the only man for the job in the UK right now.

An example of his experience would be a match of mine poss 4th round last year with M. Arnold. I like Mic, hes a good guy; but in terms of playing, hes quite slow and takes as much time as he thinks he needs per move. I have no problems with this, but against the clock, i became agitated and made misplays based on poor judgement of the remaining time. As Ian was HJ, i asked if he could monitor the pace of the game, and he did so willingly restoring an equal amount of time per turn for both Mic and myself. He remained calm and didnt rush either of us, but kept us in check and said things liek 'dont panic, you have sufficent time' etc. This is what i think we need at nationals, and no disrespect to any of the other judges out there right now, but knowing rulings/the way to act is one thing, and knowing how and when to apply what you think is correct is another aspect of judging altogether. This IMO is what seperates Ian from any other judge we have here in the UK.

OK OK ENOUGH PROPS FOR IAN hArHarhaR

Well, Ian for the HJ (Head judge or HUNGJOB? YOU DECIDE!)

There is also the issue raised by some that I have family members in each age group. I think Carl had in mind that if I was staff this year I would act as a central rules resource but not be involved in any actual judging within the playing area. Keeper of the Compendium if you will. I don't see how this would work as last year all the judge staff knew of my rules knowledge yet there wasn't a single question form outside the 15+ group that I can recall. There would be no right for any player to make the appeal to 'Ask Ian'.

Rod may be an unknown to many here but then I'd be an unknown to players comming from Exeter, Manchester, hull etc.. There is no reason to expect the worst.

Rod is an excellent TO and an excellent judge from my experience!
I wish I'd played more this year. I expect I'll be dropping early on.

My choice would be Ian too, I've only been at a couple of tourneys where hes judging and I've never had any problems. If he doesn't want to do it thats far enough and I think its best we support Rod as the decision has been made.

If your taking a playing role, please play Paraflora!

I think it's time for Kish to step up to the plate. =D Someone had better link him to the Compendium though. j/k

Freddy and Sami are taking it home like usual.. Its a ritual.

I suspect they'll be at the top, the bigest competition we have had this year was the London Regionals and they did a 1-2 there. Who was the best of the rest though in London:thumb:

But I do think it's going to be pretty close this year, we had 6 different Regional winners out of 6 after all. And Exeter has some 'interesting' players lol. I've had exams all this week, plus according to Kudos (a careers program) I'm going to be a funeral director... I haven't been testing much with the depression, plus Freddy and the network apparently got my deck list so I'ld take a T16 finish.

3 days to go people. GL and 2nd place is good too (remember what happened last time I said that...)

Guys, I know you all want Ian out of the tournament so that you all actually have a chance of winning, but I'm sure this other guy is good too. Yeah, Ian's a great judge, but nobody can FORCE him to judge :)

And BTW, just thought I'd mention that I'm winning this Sat, so there's not really too much point in the rest of you going- unless you want me to sign some cards for you?

P.S Wasnt trying to force Ian in anyway, just thought id let him now he is the Judge i respect most in terms of experience and impartiality; also if he was considering judging, i would help him lean towards it a lil more ;D WE DONT WANT THAT MONSTER IN THE 15+ I WANNA WIN ;D

Carl selects the judge team.
I have family in each age group.
I don't know how much Bournemouth is influencing Carl. But it will be a factor. I judged last year because I was unhappy with 2004 Nationals judging. 2005 was better but still left room for improvement.

A judge place isn't on offer for me. Not that I believe I should have to volunteer every year. We should have more than a handfull of players who will give up a chance at the prizes in order to ensure accurate, fair, and impartial judging. There is a thread elsewhere on the gym where quite a few players are stating that the judges should be selected from the better players. Of course what they really mean is some other good player and not themselves. I do believe that those who have benefitted most from Nationals ought to consider what they can give back at Nationals.

Hmm , a bit of a contentious post this close to Nationals. So I'll end with wishing everyone good luck and look forward to an enjoyable event this Saturday.

Nopoke: That makes sense to me in the US where the best players will have qualified through Gym Challenge. Our lot have no other way of getting there, so it seems it would be asking much more of them

Anyone staying at the Holiday Inn?
