Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Dean Nezam, 11, of Fairfax is among those back from last year’s competition that took place in Dale City and drew about 130 players.

“I took first place last year in the junior division … and I feel pretty good that I have at least a 50-50 chance of winning again,” said Nezam. He has been a Pokemon card collector for more than two years and likes entering tournaments.

Man, Dean is super confident! Why does he have a 50% chance of winning the whole thing?

yoyo--defending champ confidence, perhaps?

japple--I'm from Richmond, so no, we don't get it down here. Perhaps one of the (many) NoVAers can help out.

Our numbers are holding up REALLY nicely, folks!! Great turnout!

Sheesh, what did Melody do that I can't do?

Also, I dislike how the lack of female players is mentioned in every single article about Pokemon. I feel that it's a misrepresentation of a game that's obviously not meant for only one gender.

I think it was mentioned because people have it in their heads that only guys play games like pokemon. Also if it was a mentioned as a 'lack of' female players, they would've said something more like "85% of the players are males".

I'll have to teach Dean that saying there is a "50-50 chance" is not a measure of confidence that you will win but is instead another way of saying "I will either win or lose". What does it mean when the meteorologist says there's a 50% chance of rain?

Lucario EX, drmario is right. TCGs have a big image of being a boy's activity and Pokemon is no exception. An article saying this is telling the reader that girls do play this game. Every so often, I do get people who are surprised by how many girls play at my leagues. In a tournament report floating around here, the writer mentions that she is the only girl in top cut. It's no secret, girls are a minority in the game despite a lot of pokemon being "cute." At HW, I reported 41 players, 8 of which are girls. At the Library, out of 65 people, 7 are girls. So, between the two leagues, about 1 in 7 players is a girl (about 15%).

how? Those are the numbers I reported. I wouldn't be surprised if totoro's aren't much different.

Back on the article, I don't understand how the title relates to the content. Despite saying a teen was among the winners, there is very little written about said teen besides his name and age. Although, the article didn't mention younger players who are less than 10 years old, it capture that there is a large range of ages in the game.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, I'm saying that TCGs being a boy's activity doesn't make sense.

Well, its not that they are a "boy's activity," its just that that is what the numbers say...

So Helen, your more arguing the actual fact of the matter, and not the credibility of the statistics Foley presented, correct? I don't get it either. Pokemon is SUPPOSED to appeal to all age groups and genders. I do think it should be different though. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a pervert stalker. (And I'm not, honest.)

...drifting....off....course but since the paper is from Manassas, the main headline is that Alexander won the senior division. Unfortunately (I guess) they didn't have a chance to interview him because of publishing deadlines, so they had to use interviews done during the event before any winners were known. A focus on Alexander would have been more appropriate given the target audience of the paper, but it does work as an overall look at a tourney.

I'd like to get a copy of this paper, since the article mentions my son. If there's any NOVAer who could grab me a copy, please PM me. I could pick it up at MD S/P/T, and of course, I'd reimburse you for it.

Thanks,

Looking at the paper's cities, Woodbridge and Gainesville are listed. There is a league in Gainesville, so it may be benefitical to put its LL and members on alert of the paper's article.
