Worlds 2007

Worlds 2007 - Invitation Only? - The following has not been confirmed and could be completely wrong, although I am positive that at least the first two points are correct. :p I have heard many rumors floating around among professors, players, and judges for the past few months regarding next year's Worlds, and today it was confirmed to me again by even more people. What has been said almost by everyone I have ever talked to is that (a) there will be no open Grinders for entering Worlds next year, and (b) Worlds will be invite-only. I have also heard, though not as frequently, that (a) only sixteen 15+ players from America will go to Worlds next year, and that (b) the "Grinders" to get into Worlds will be Nationals, which will also be an invitation-only event (which you get invited to from winning a lower, premiere event, and accumulating points from winning premier events - I think, basically, that the higher you place at premiere events, the more points you receive, and then you get invited to Nationals to compete for entrance into Worlds if you meet the requirement - not too sure on this part). If any of this is true, it looks as if POP is trying to make Worlds harder to get into so that it has tougher competition and so that it is more exclusive to the best-of-the-best. I am sure we will hear something soon regarding the above if it is indeed true, so stay tuned and try to win everything you can (although there isn't too much going on between now and November, is there?).

From wahts posted on the pokebeach, dosen't this make it sound like its going to be purely a closed event? like not having all the people just come in to join the event (even if there is no grinder) I am planning to go to worlds 2007, even with out an invite, but do you think theres still going to be side events and eveything else going on like before? even if there is no grinder, there will still be side events happening at worlds next year ... wont there? ...

or is any of this still not confirmed and im just worring for nothing, lol ..

Isn't Worlds invite only already?

No LCQ. I know, a contradiction in terms.

I would hate for Worlds to become too intamite and exclusive. It kinda ruins the fun of everybody (At least from the USA) meeting together once every year-Worlds just seems like a better excuse than nationals. Plus I'm really gonna have to know somone to arrange PIRN coverage (there are no leagues in HI).

The fact that they are making nationals invite only also is sad. =( The funnest thing about this game is meeting all the cool people I talk to online.

Yes that is true but do not forget that the whole point of the Worlds is to find the worlds best PTCG players and not to start social gatherings.

I am most certainly not saying that you should not socialise with each other whilst at the event or the fact that making it excluisve to invite is the best thing to do but just remeber what the event is in the first place.

Though I would love to see it hosted somewhere in Europe and not always in America. Yes, PUSA own the franchise and probably always will own it for some time but that is no excuse. They should consider that by hosting it in other countries besides the USA will mean it will be easier for more people to mix with more players and forge new friendships in foreign lands.

PUI can't shift the continents back. Someday, maybe, but that's a horse of a different color. Besides, Hawaii (remember the second i, folks) counts as pretty exotic and probably costs less than Europe would assuming a large portion of the invites would probaly still come from the US. I don't like to put it that way, but I assume that's factored in.

And I think a lot of people would disagree with the first statement. After all, it's the bonds between players that keep people going to events and buying more product.

The world championship's purpose might be to decide who is pokemon "world champion," but most of the player's mostly want to hang with all their friends from other states/countries.

I don't have a problem with Worlds being closed (i.e., invites only with no Grinder). Worlds 2002 was a much more exclusive event and it was great.

But any discussion of making Nationals invite-only is bad from the start.

I can see making States, Regionals, and Gyms as feeders for Nationals in terms of trips and such, but to make it a closed event will really discourage people from going.

But maybe that's what PUI wants to do. Maybe they want Nationals to be a smaller, more exclusive event. (Again, I think that would be a mistake, but it's their game, they can do what they want.)

It's a lot of work, but it's really cool to have a giant turnout for Nats.
Really perks up the interest of other TCG players when they hear the growth of it, year over year.
I'd like to see a 600+ Nationals next year.

Let me put an end to this right now.

US Nationals will NOT be an invite only event.

It is my intent to keep it that way. We have many ways to make it work, even if it continues to increase in size.

Now, I am finally going to get some sleep.

Thx for that little tidbit, Dave! I'd like to know a little bit more about that other piece of information that WPM put up, about the Premier Points (or whatever it'll be called). I'm intrigued by the thought of traveling players getting a bit more of an edge over the nontravelers...

Well, to everything that has been posted so far, PUI will have to anounce Worlds invites and trips soon, as the 2007 season approches...

Worlds 2007 will not be a typical PUI Worlds event. I will be much more exclusive, I'm guessing.

As one who took a kid to a highly exclusive event (Tropical Mega Battle 2001), let me say it will be very special for those lucky enough to participate. Hopefully, there will be enough room for some of the more avid and richer non-participants to show up and enjoy the event too.

I personally have no problem with Worlds being so exclusive. However, I'm hoping something will fill the void for what has become so special to so many people. I think PUI realizes that. We'll just have to wait and see what happens next year. Pokemon has the best family-friends OP in the World.
