Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

The crazy card

I just thought it was a funny coincidence. thepliskin posts a combo, gets told it won't work . . . a few days later - it wins Japan's Nats

Funny, yes. (Me being an idiot and skimming the translation once and then not re-reading until now, so I thought it said x1 a turn=)

Again, sorry for my rash judgment.

Also, a side note or two-

  • Japan Nats is invite only, based on winners of qualifier tournaments (Though I thought Esa said this changed and they didn't even have Nats)
  • Japan's tournament format is not swiss by any means, meaning the deck could play differently. (Their tourney format does favor speed over setup)

It's not clunky. Get it out of your heads.

Emboar is clunky because it has a 4 retreat costs that demands a switch
Meganium has a crappy attack, grass as a whole is terrible, and less hp

This card is great.
Energy acceleration (dark patch) makes it easier to attack, although I don't see the need.
For 1 energy on YOUR side of the field w/ Darkrai, everything has free retreat, wtf is that.

This card is amazing. Way better than klingklang/meganium/etc...

Also, an unlimited Shaymin/energy switch means you can do the following:

- Manipulate energy onto Mewtwo Ex to attack or move energy around to not get killed by Mewtwo Ex
- Cycle energy easier with Tornadus
- You have great N defense. If your opponent Catcher's in something and then N's you. A dark energy is an incredible out for you as opposed to when an eel gets catchered, it's screwed to DCE/switch
- There's only 4 catchers available in BW-on (no JA), meaning that if your opponent gets early kills with catcher, you can bring in this bad beast later and win with max potions and attrition.
- Sableeye is ridiculous in this deck too, the more i think about it...
- Hydreigon has a beastly 150 hp, meaning your opponent is going to have to pick and choose whether to kill Hydreigon with a 3 energy terrakion or kill darkrai. Either will still screw you over.
- Hydreigon can OHKO terrakion, this is relevant

Need I say more?

It's really strange that I don't see any Rayquaza EX. I thought it was released in Dragon Blade in March? Is this a different format?

Ok, I know that Japan has played HS-on for majority of this season-Can anyone confirm the format here?

The top 16 I posted up was posted by a Japanese player yesterday. It is quite strange there isn't a single Rayquaza deck there. Although, I would think it is due to the amount of decks that can keep it in check. A few examples being this Hydreigon + Darkrai EX deck and Garchomp + Altaria decks that a lot of Japanese players are favoring now. Also, the fact that the format was a BW - on I believe also plays a factor. You don't have cards like Shaymin UL, Junk Arm, Professor Oak's, Smeargle, and many other cards that make the format faster and more donk favorable. Of course, donk is still there but not as strong with a HGSS - on format.

I believe all Official tournaments are BW - on with two leagues. One being 16+ participants and the other being 15-. There is also a Open league which is the DP - on format with Palace ruling and current rule structure. There is also a ton of local tournaments being held monthly which can range from HGSS - on, BW - on, DP - on, and 30 card decks.

It's rather annoying to put fire in eels, hard to sustain, bad weakness. It's kind of like zekrom EX, great card but it's just kinda clunky

It could be that Rayquaza EX is just a free prize against Garchomp/Altaria, which seems to be the superior deck. Teching Rayquaza EX into Zekeels decreases efficiency, and facing Garchomp, might be suicide.

It seems that I was mistaken, Hydreigon is actually useful. Though I just looked at the Garchomp/Altaria deck and I can't wait to try that one out.

^
agreed, since there isn't that insane acceleration and as many ways to abuse it it makes sense that stage twos are more playable at least bw-on.
altaria/garchomp seems better to me as well, who doesn't love garchomp being bdif...

I got the top 16 and the match ups from a Japanese player's blog who was also collecting information themselves. There is also a deck list of the Hydreigon + Darkrai EX circulating around which is also posted on a blog as well. I haven't really linked them because I wasn't sure how the forum rules on linking to other websites were enforced. I can send PM's for those interested I suppose.
