The UnderDog That No One Saw Coming - GENESES

Well, being one of the head judges, I had a chance to watch a lot of the top cut matches. Not all of course. However I got to watch all the finals. I have to admit, Geneses and Bidier had an awesome match. It was some of the best playing I've seen. No offense to any of the other players of course, but I was very impressed with the level of playing - especially from some of the "rookies." A lot of the ones who did well in Nat's are relatively knew to the game. Perhaps it's these ones who aren't quite so hide-bound that will make a difference. In any case I hope you all do well when it's time for World's. By the way, bring me back something will ya?

i think so too :D good job man :p see you at worlds :)

I have always said that smaller cuts are the way to go. That way a player who goes 7-0 or 8-0 gets rewarded for his play in swiss, rather than getting knocked out by a 32nd seed. The last few Worlds, we have seen #1 seeds, who went 8-0 in swiss go down to people who were 5-3 and should not even have made the cut (no offense Jeremy, but I and 25 other people were also 5-3, the computer program sucks, and it is a crap shoot who gets in when there is 25-30 people at 5-3, and Chris Fullop didn't deserve that fate). So, about those Canadian Nationals.....no reason for a top 16 cut, Nintendo should get its act together, run enough rounds for a top 8 cut at all events, including Worlds. Had it been a top 8 cut at Can Nats, very different story. The 2 eventual finalist don't make the final, because they finished 9-16 and don't make the cut. As it was the first 2 seeds got knocked out, I was one of them. Had it been a top 8 cut, I play my daughter Sarah, and therefore one of us goes through to top 4 and probably wins a trip to Hawaii for our family. See how things change. How about Laurie, the 1st seed, goes undefeated, loses to the 16th seed, who then finishes 2nd. (I really feel for Laurie, because she didn't deserve this fate, it happens to her every year at Can Nats. She would well represent Canada, but has never had the chance. Talk about good sportmanship, there is none better) I play competitive Magic (MTG) and this kind of thing rarely, and I mean rarely happens. Why? Because they run enough rounds and go to a top 8 cut. (don't be a wise guy and tell me about those Mtg top 64 cuts at Grand Prix, because as you know your record continues on day 2, down to a top 8 cut, you just get rid of 300 people). Those who don't know me may say this is sour grapes, because I lost. It is NOT. I have been saying this for years. I am an old time chess player and also just good at stategy and critical thinking And by the way, yes, I am going to Hawaii, as my son Bryan won a trip in the 11-14 division at Can Nats. This will be his 5th Pokemon Worlds, yes 5th, Seattle 2002 was the first. So, just to wrap it up, what happened, happened, no sour grapes, Can Nats 2007 is in the books, but the facts are the facts. I am not always right, I'm only human, I make mistakes, but I was there and I can tell you that with a top 8 cut, the 1 and 2 seeds, me and Laurie most likely meet in the finals, as we did in 2005. Congrats to Geneses and all who did win a trip. See you in Hawaii.
Greg.

Tone down the tone folks, or a lot of people are getting vacations from the 'gym.

LAST WARNING.

Man, I detect a taste of sour grapes here, or is it just a lot of people eating crow?

I am glad the champ had the sense to change his post, and succeed with a "rogue" deck.

With a field that large (69), it can come down to matchups, and any given Sunday.

good luck to all at Worlds.

I will see you there!

Vince

Dont worry people I have what Omega posted before.
And must I say
I am DEEPLY dissapointed in you
Im not even that mean
Gosh,
Bad National Champion FTL
expect someone making fun of you at worlds
1) youre canadian(it always happens)
2) youre stupid posts
3) You know why

Don't worry Pokekid, I have it too.

But enough about the post already.

Sounds like he handled himself well enough at the event, and posted something that he regretted and took down.

MOVE ON.

Vince

Hey. Despite a lot of comments on your part that I don't agree with, I just want to extend congratulations to you for winning. Becoming National Champion of any country is never a small deal. Good luck at Worlds, and I hope you will be able to back up your showing at this year's Nats with an excellent record next tournament season.

pokekid, i was frustrated at the moment, it wasn't like me to be talking like that. you've feuled many people with your post and offended many. i was just standing up for my friends just like you would. i apologize for my actions. in return to you, i would like to face you in a match; my national deck vs your destiny. i will also remove my post about it. and let bygones be bygones.

well put. Just before I forget, our little inside joke. Warp point + Kant's 2 Professor Rowan saves the day =D haha. See you guys at Worlds =D

yeah... Kant, i was gonna mention that those rowans were yours that were in my deck and trust me, without them, i would've never won the finals... hahah thanks for helping a friend of a friend out. well now we can say that me and you are friends. thanks bud. chillin' at worlds together ME, MATT, MY BRO. ULY and YOU DUDE!!!!!!!

wow, i can't believe that ur representing Canada as our National Champion. Alot of people deserved this alot more then you did. But still, u did win, so props for that.

I've been through a lot, i don't mean to take the place of anyone more deserving. But, not only for you, but for everyone as well. i put a lot of heart into my deck.

Honestly, Exploud EX was my favourite card and Golem is my favourite pokemon in the game (Gameboy). i apologize to everyone that thinks that i lucked out. The deck is not random, everyone works together as a team from using all the abilities of Whismur, Loudred, Exploud EX, Geodude, Graveler, Golem and Stantler. I used all of them equally and fought hard for my placement.

I am not bragging that i am the Champion, i am just too excited that i actually made it. i worked hard all season long to accept all my loses to become strong and have all full hope for myself and friends to win it where it meant the most to us.

I worked hard for this as much as all those who preped for this tourney as well. i am as much as deserving as anyone else.

Thanks you for those who believed in me too and those who accept me as champion, and for those who still don't, i hope you can trust me one day too.

I'm sure Geneses thanks you for your hollow congrats. :nonono: Well I guess ultimately the decision was mine to run top 16, since I had the deciding vote. No matter how you slice it, no matter how everyone feels, I saw the chance that the TOM software said we could run a top 16. I even asked a person here on the gym for his advice. However I ultimately figured that the most people possible should have a shot at the trips. This was not POP, this was not Nintendo. I decided to make it a top 16 cut, when I could just as easily have opted for top 8. I'll be happy to take the blame for it. Everyone should have a chance to go, not just your family. You may not like my comment, but I certainly am ashamed of yours. The only thing I agree with you on, is that Laurie would have made a good ambassador for Canada. Perhaps some of the other people who have posted here should consider her as a role model since I'm not too impressed with what some have posted. Certainly not setting much of an example are we? :thumb: Good job.

Personally, I'm an advocate of always running as large a top cut as possible. It's too easy to get a T1 or T2 loss in this game, and that can cost you a spot in the top whatever. That, and with the Opp. Win % being the first (and usually, only relevant) tiebreaker, it's too easy to have somebody not make the cut because they got hosed on something they had no control over.

Also, if before any given event, you ask players if they would rather a T16 or a T8, I can guaruntee you that a large majority will always want as large a cut as possible.

How about Laurie, the 1st seed, goes undefeated, loses to the 16th seed, who then finishes 2nd.

what's the problem here ? i belive i won the game 2 - 1, i didnt cheat and we finished on time, i dont see anthing wrong with it.

am not bragging or anything, i just dont see why you are complaining :(

Bidier, don't worry, the people that stuck around and saw your journey to the top know how much you accomplished. I'm sure he doesn't mean anything against you, it's just sometimes very crushing when you go 7-0 in a swiss only to be eliminated 1st round. It's almost like you worked so hard to go perfect before being knocked out and everything you did was for nothing. You played a fine game and there is nothing anybody can say about the way you performed. Congrats again.

The reason why he's complaining is that he figured that the top 16 should have been a top 8, and you wouldn't have been in it in the first place. It's a (EDIT: let me add the word "incredibly") petty and selfish point of view if you ask me. Sure, it was certainly too bad that Laurie was knocked out first round of the top 16, but there was nothing wrong with your game itself. It happens all the time, that's why they call it the curse of the first.

Its called Curse of the 1st. Even in Top 8 cut there is a strong possibility that the 8th seed beats the #1st seed. This is not the NCAA tourney where a #1 seed has never lost to a #16 team. Guarenteed that will happen though one day.
