Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

What do you expect the Pokémon TCG to give you?

Why complain?

Because nobody will speak your mind FOR you.

With that said, the biggest thing to bother me in the past couple years is last season's K-Value distribution. Nationals should be worth more than States imo!

I totally agree with you.

If you buy a pack of cards then you are entitled to . . . what's in the pack. That's what you paid for.

As for tournaments, I think it is best to look at them as somewhere you can go see your friends, and have fun playing Pokemon. Anything you win is a bonus.

...

This "PUI gives you these events for free and you still complain, you're such an evil person" "stuff" makes me cringe, really... What do you think PUI is? The girl scouts? The wellfare? Welcome to reality *headdesk*

PUI is a company which wants to sell stuff, in this case colorful pieces of paper...
If they expect me to buy them then they should do something to make we want to buy them.
No I never buy single boosters, cause in the end its a waste of money (everyone who played the SV PR and didnt get like 3 LvX will agree with me). I dont have that much money that I can just buy a booster out of boredom which probably takes the direct route to a trashcan anyway
If they want to change this they have to do something to make boosters more attractive.
Isnt this the most basic rule of a market?

But oh no, these holier than you people treat PUI like the girl scouts and I'm a big meanie for not paying money for cards that will 90% be useless trash. Do you have that much spare money? Good for you, I dont...

We have a new TCG over here (Bleach). The Boosters are 2,5€ in contrast to 4/4,5€ for pkmn. You also get a Holofoil in every booster and the commons are nearly all useable. I already bought like 2 boxes of this TCg, because I know I will get something for my money...

The only real use in buying cards is that you can use them in tournaments, if there werent any tournaments I'd just print me a deck and play my friends for fun / private tournaments.
And even at these tournaments we just get payed back in there Currency. Is it that much to ask for that the one who wins this tournament can at least leave it somewhat satisfied?

Give us alternative art cards (like WoW has), give us promo cards, give us SOMETHING that makes you go away from a tournament saying "this is something cool I just won and I just EARNED" and I'm satisfied. But old promo cards and 4 boosters? And the prices dont even get adjusted to the player numbers? Thats ridiculus really.

BTW, might be BIG NEWS but people want mroe boosters because if you dont get atleast 10 or something you'll go away with a pile of crap 90% of the time...

And how much would it cost PUI to give out some more boosters to reward you for the time you spend with this game? Nothing?!

I'm not greedy or anything but is it too much to expect that, if you win a big tournament, you at elast have your gas bill covered?
Is it too much to expect that, if I win a tournament I can go away saying "this is a cool price I really enjoyed winning"?

Give us a bebes search with an alternative artwork, a playset of usable cards, an all picture uxie, some need sleeves (that dont fall apart if you look at them and dont get you dq'ed for using them...) SOMETHING....
I'd gladly take anything that at least gives you a somewhat special feeling and a payoff.

But over here people mostly try to sell these 4 boosters they just won for like 8€ (16€ original price which is ~22$) and IF they get LUCKY they get rid of them for this price. THen they use the money to cover the food costs of the day. The V Medal goes to the binder and will probably stay there for a very long time. Does this feel like wininng a tournament? Like acomplishing something? Really? I dont think so...

Is it that much to ask that, if you win a tournament, you win something somewhat cool or unique? Something that doesnt give you the feeling like you just got leftovers from the trashcan handed over?

Dont even let me get started about getting half a box of cards after WINNING a very competetive tournament with ~60 people and paying the same that the boosters would have costed for the gas. And then you open the boosters and get 2 somewhat usable holos, 1 trainer and a skymin LvX that just got released as a tin card....

Most "PGs" arent greedy but is it that much to ask that, if you win a tournament, you can at least cover a part of the expences of the day? And that you get something else than trash boosters?

[/rant]

These "Pui is like the girlscouts, they give you everything for free after selling you a ton of colorful paper for a ton of money and you still dare to complain because you think that the fact that you put a lot of time in supporting this game gives you the right to not feel like getting served leftovers from the trashcan after winning a tournament against a lot of really competetive people (and the tournament was the reason to buy these cards to begin this) you are such a terrible and greedy person" people make me cringe....

Just remember this. No one is forcing you to play this game. You have the choice to stop playing if you feel that the game is no longer worth your while. You have places to sell off the cards that you no longer want so it doesn't seem like you "wasted money on cardboard." You make it sound like you're entitled to getting all of this stuff from TPCI. They make all of these changes to try and make the sets better for people and the cards easier to get.

We complained about japanese cards being banned. What did TPCI do? They not only allowed us to use 6 Japanese cards in out decks for one more year, but they listened to the ratio complaints and did give us 3-4 level x cards in a box. Look at all of the promos the Japanese get. While we haven't gotten a lot of them, we are getting some. Tin promos are just part of that. Who wants to spend 60 dollars on a Charizard Level x anyway? Getting them a bit cheaper makes it easier for us to build our decks.

Sadly you can never make everyone happy.

Wow Yoshi, you said a bunch!

The other day, I spent $60 today on boosters. I got crap.

Everyday, I see countless people buy lotto and scratch tickets at the gas station. I'll bet most of them got crap.

Playing my Platinum DS game, I never run into Shiny Pokes and over 100 honey trees has yet to attract Munchlax.

I used to play golf. Most of the time, I hit crap. But, every-so-often, I'd hit a great shot. The excitement kept me playing through those crapping shots, knowing someday I'd hit another great shot.

Yesterday, I got my first Shiny Poke ever - a Kricketune. I'm still hopeful a Munchlax will find my honey.

On the news the other day, I saw a report about a lotto winner. I guess that's what motivates some to continue buying tickets at the gas station (IMO, it's gambling - something I deem wasteful).

Last night, I pulled a LvX after spending only $10 on 3 boosters.

It's all about attitude.

Just remember this. No one is forcing you to play this game.

Orly? The thing is that I really love this game, but right now I'm really unhappy with a few things. Dont you complain when something that you love goes down the gutter :/ ?

You have the choice to stop playing if you feel that the game is no longer worth your while.

It never was worth it to begin with, and still I did it because what I got back was enough to be happy with and the rest was something I was willing to pay for the fun it gives me...
You have places to sell off the cards that you no longer want so it doesn't seem like you "wasted money on cardboard."

If you buy 10 piles of 10 boosters, how often will you even get something remotly close to what you payed if you sell the cards as singles ;)? And now think about the same scenario with japanese boosters ;)

You make it sound like you're entitled to getting all of this stuff from TPCI. They make all of these changes to try and make the sets better for people and the cards easier to get.

I make it sound like this because people seem to expect it from me. People seem to expect everyone to buy boosters although they'll never get anything from it.
If they are trying to make the sets better they could keep Ray X Charizard X and whatever the last one is out of the boosters and stick them in the tins. This way everyone would be happy.
Then they could stop making rares out of stuff like Camerupt G and Sableye G and put them back to where they belong. STARTER DECKS !!!
But if you play a SV PR and look through your cards afterwards and realise these cards arent worth 5$ (lets not even talk about usable)....

We complained about japanese cards being banned. What did TPCI do? They not only allowed us to use 6 Japanese cards in out decks for one more year, but they listened to the ratio complaints and did give us 3-4 level x cards in a box.

And I really appreciate this, but they also threw like 20 completly unusable rares in this set, 3 of those LvX are going to become Tin LvX which makes them worth ~twice of a regular holo and the set is just cramped out with complet trash. The moment where they release a set which has 70% usable holos 70% usable rares and 4,5/6 LvX that are usable while also keeping the same ratio, I'm happy.

Look at all of the promos the Japanese get. While we haven't gotten a lot of them, we are getting some. Tin promos are just part of that. Who wants to spend 60 dollars on a Charizard Level x anyway? Getting them a bit cheaper makes it easier for us to build our decks.

Tin Promos arent japanese... Its not that we get them, its the way we get them.
Why cant they distribute cards like in japan? Throw the stupid SnorlaxX in a happy meal, make Mismagius a Blister card, keep cards that are meant to be starter deck cards in starter decks, give us another tournament promo every now and then, release LvX in starter decks to make some decks really easy to afford (which beenfits kids a lot), and give us a holo and 2 Rares in a booster. I'd gladly buy boosters every time im at league because I have really high odds to get SOMETHING back and not regret wasting 4€ for TRASH.

Sadly you can never make everyone happy.

I bet japanese people are a lot happier than we are. And show me ONE person that is happy with the way they released SV over here :/

Talk to the kids who pulled multiple level x cards out of their packs at the prereleases. I bet they were pretty happy with the way the packs were set up.

At least the crappy rares here aren't Misty's Goldeen and Brock's Zubat.

Wow Yoshi, you said a bunch!

The other day, I spent $60 today on boosters. I got crap.

That probably may sound really mean but this is why I never would buy that many boosters anyway...

Everyday, I see countless people buy lotto and scratch tickets at the gas station. I'll bet most of them got crap.

Soem people are out of salvation, not my fold :/ Sry but I'm a mathematicians, dont let me get started on lotto xD Anyway IF you play lotto you dont expect to win anyway...

Playing my Platinum DS game, I never run into Shiny Pokes and over 100 honey trees has yet to attract Munchlax.

Get them from Wifi/RNG Reset/whatever. Still the game works, right? I dont even use Honey on trees because its too much of a drag, I still enjoy the game

I used to play golf. Most of the time, I hit crap. But, every-so-often, I'd hit a great shot. The excitement kept me playing through those crapping shots, knowing someday I'd hit another great shot.

You still had the fun of playing, is buying a booster that much fun? Your example actually works the other way around, I'd gladly pay something for tournaments to get the chance of this "once in a while" great shot. I played YGO back then, one tournament I got first out of 300 people and won a psp. Before you start to think bad about GYO for this, I sold the PSP and the next 10 tournaments I didnt get anything, I used most of the money for train tickets and food on the way. I didnt earn much this way but I was satisfied because it was fun and exiting.

Also golf really is a bad example here because if you hot or not will not change anything in the end, you play for the fun anyway. (or are you talking about golf tournaments?)

Yesterday, I got my first Shiny Poke ever - a Kricketune. I'm still hopeful a Munchlax will find my honey.

The thing is, trying doesnt cost you anything here...

On the news the other day, I saw a report about a lotto winner. I guess that's what motivates some to continue buying tickets at the gas station (IMO, it's gambling - something I deem wasteful).

Some lucksack won the lottery but in the end it will never be you... Or let me put it different, the amounth of lotto tickets you'd have to buy to get a somewhat realistic chance to win it costs much more than what you could win there.(at least this is what its like in the pkmn example...)

Last night, I pulled a LvX after spending only $10 on 3 boosters.

And it probably was the awesome Mismagius that you'll never get rid of or something like this. If you'd just have taken the 60$ from the boosters above and these 10$ you could have ~5 LvX of your choice.

It's all about attitude.

Sense of Entitlement vs Gratitude
Pessimism vs Optimism

Maybe I'm to much of a mathematician but if I know that buying singles will get me somewhere much faster then buying boosters I just cant buy boosters.
And I couldnt be happy about pulling one LvX after spending 70$ on boosters.
And I now that buying boosters will leave me in frustration and regret 90% of the time...

You also have to consider a box is ~100€ which is about 135$ and a boosters is 4€ which is about 5,5$ here...

*Results in the past aren't guarantees for results in the future.* SV is crap for this format and period in time, no matter how you put it.

I was sitting next to a girl who pulled 3 LvX out of six packs... Then ask the 5 people around here what they think about this ;)

And now consider the power creep and tell me pulling zubat/goldeen back then was worse then pulling this SABLEYE... At least those 2 can evolve, Sableye isnt even useful as a coaster since I probably wouldnt drink anymore to avoid seing his stupid face...

Seriously, look at this Sableye, look at it. Now tell me this thing doesnt SCREAM "HAHA YOU JUST WASTED 4$ ON MEEE *GRIN*"
Look at his face. Speak about adding insult to injury....

I got one japanese SV pack in my welcoming back, this pack had one drifblim one exploud and some other rare I dont remember. This basically equals what I got from the PR...

@Pachirisu

You might as well play league right? I love playing for fun, but if I play a tournament I want to play a tournament. If I play for fun I can just print my deck and dont have to worry about idiotic card ratios or anything, I'd be happy this way...
But If I win a tournament I want to get SOMETHING. I dont expect to get back my gas money, I dont expect YGO like prices, but getting something that makes you feel a BIT happy and like you just earned something...
Give the winner a usable promo, an alternative art promo, a card with a stamp that says "won at blablabla" that is actually usable, something.... It doesnt have to be much, just something that is a BIT special and makes you feel happy, and not what was left in a trash can.
Would you climb out of your bed, spend X$ on cards, drive 2 hours, spend 20$ on tickets and play a tournament where you get to play 2 newbies and get 2 real games (if you get really lucky) for the chance to get a sableye a mawile and an old promo card?
Might as well get up later, go to your local league and play with proxies...

And still I do it, I get up in the middle of the night, spend a bunch of money on tickets food and cards, just to meet a few people I rarely see and play a game I like. But when the tournament gets more and mroe pointless and uninteerssting, even less people show up because the chance of winnign a VMedal is nothign that you'd take over 2 hours of sleep etc it really gets frustrating.

First of all, I really appreciaty what TPCi gives to us, compared to other TCG companies. That's why I play Pokémon and not any other game. That's why I support the game by judging tournaments, writing guides and attracting new players in forums or at events.

However, I agree to Yoshi-'s point about more interesting prizes. Yes, more interesting, not more expensive. When I won my first State Championships trophy more than two years ago I felt really great, it was just a 3rd place one but I finally made it after beeing 5th and 6th at many other States before. Now, I've got 9 of these trophies, and they are still the same. It's not like they don't look good, but... yea, all the same. My high excitement for winning trophies and other commemorative prizes got lost in the last years. I still travel to many State Championships because I like the game and the competition, and I also want to face new players I don't meet at local tournaments. I'm still happy when I win, but I'm not excited about the prizes any more, even at big tournaments like States.

The Nationals trophy from 2008 was something exciting new. This year's Nationals trophy was kinda disappointing since it's the same shape as those from States/Regionals/whatever. Same for the City Championship Medals. The 2006-2007 ones were so much better than the 2008-2009 ones in my opionion. Would it really be that much of a problem to give a different kind of trophy every year? Or at least a different winner promo for Battle Roads?

Then, there could be some more promo cards. Maybe top cut stamped promos for States or something. Almost no extra costs for TPCi, but a great addition for players who made it into top 8 and then got kicked out. 4 boosters and nothing else for beeing 5th as a State Championship seems a little low for me. The other kind of promos, as Yoshi- suggested, are alternate versions of playable cards, just to have something special in the deck. I understand that this can be a problem for the TPCi since artworks are made in Japan and it may be difficult to release a card that's not released in Japan. But it would be another "great for players - cheap for TPCi" thing. And hey, there are some nice-looking Japanese trophy cards we didn't see in the rest of the world yet. ;)

The second kind of prizes, the booster packs - ok. I actually don't want more. While the packs given out at Battle Roads are very few, they are quite ok at bigger tournaments. Exspecially Nationals have really heavy prize support, considering it's a free event without prior qualification issues.

At last, we also get some merchandise stuff. Here I have to say there was a huge advance at last season, compared to the season before. The playmats were really useful and good in quality. I hope to see some high quality deckboxes, sleeves or something for CC/States top finishers, that would be great.

With that said, the biggest thing to bother me in the past couple years is last season's K-Value distribution. Nationals should be worth more than States imo!
They are worth more more than States since you can win Scholarships and a trip to Worlds. I think that's enough. Worlds are worth more than States as well and have K-value 0. Too high K-value isn't that good. 32 for big events is ok, as well as 16 for CCs. 4 for Battle Road is almost the same as unrated, I liked the K-8 from the year before much more.

That's another thing I quickly want to touch upon - the elitist attitude a bunch of Masters seem to hold towards the Seniors and below. I know that on average the Masters have a higher skill level, but there's no need to snub the Seniors and Juniors - I'd like to see an average Master who spouts these remarks challenge the better Seniors and Juniors - he might be in for a rude awakening.
I think the problem is not about player skills, but about player attendance. Seniors and Juniors aren't supposed to face or beat masters, that's completely normal. I respect the younger age groups and help them building their decks, some of our Seniors even play at Masters level and we tested a lot for Nationals. The thing that isn't right for me and many other players is that age division with ~5 players competing get the same prizes as age divisions with ~50 players competing. Normally Masters have the biggest player numbers so that's why it seems that some Masters think like you posted. Is it fair if a Junior player gets the same prizes as a Masters player, even if he just played against (in eyes of masters) uncompetitive decks? Yes it is, since he's not supposed to be that competitive himself as a Junior. Is it fair if a Junior player gets the same prizes as a Masters player who faced tough opponents to win, while the Junior didn't even have to play because he was the only one in his age division? No, it's definitely not. The problem is, TPCi can't really change this. They may adjust booster pools by player numbers, but they can't deny a medal to a junior player because he was the only one at the tournament. It's unfair to give it to him while Seniors and Masters have to fight for it against ~20 other players, but it would be unfair as well to keep the medal back since the player can't do anything about beeing the only one in his age division.

You're right, they're worse. :O

Brock's Zubat
Brock's Rhyhorn
Misty's Goldeen
Misty's Tentacool

Compare those to any of the SV Rares. Every single SV Rare can be somewhat usable to those that don't have very much. Whether they're big HP basics, somewhat interesting effects, or simply an evolution to a common Basic, there's something there that's usable.

The four cards above are toilet paper. They were outshone by Common or Uncommon Basics of the same name in the same (or next) set. In short, they were the four most useless cards ever printed compared to their rarity.

Looks pretty comparably useless to me.

but but but but those have great images! You know toiletpaper with pics are move valuable.

Anyhow, it seems like most of the old school players have been traumatized for life by the discovery of those Zubat, Tentacool and whatnot rares. But here is the thing: That was then, this is now. They were crap back then for THAT format (and still are) , while the ones from SV have similar suckage for the current format.

Hey!
Do not compare Spinda to those crappy birds. =(
It's really annoying to discard your opponent's special energy cards.

btw this one got expulsed from Base Set for being too bad. Now it finally found space in some set. At least it's not a rare. ^^

Hm, lets break down all costs then (Only looking at non bonus prizes, only the packs and guaranteed stuff)
2008/2009 season

Battle Roads (Fall). Each battle road gets a box for the players, and 3 VM cards.

Citys. Each City Championship got 3 boxes for the players. Also 3 medals.

State/Province/Territory. Each S/P/T got 7 boxes for the players, $900, and 12 trophies (price unknown)

Regionals. Regionals got 24 boxes for the players, $7,500 in scholarships, 3 trips to Nats (Appx value varies), 12 trophies (price unknown)

Battle Roads (Spring). Each battle Road gets a box for the players, and 3 VM cards

Nationals.
US Nationals gets 54 boxes for the players, $42,000 in scholarships, 12 DSi's ($150 each), 12 trips to worlds (Appx Value varies), 12 trophies (price unknown)
Canada Nationals gets 17 boxes and 24 packs for the players, 12 DSi's, 12 trophies (price unknown), $7,500 in scholarships, 6 trips to worlds (Appx Value Varies)

Worlds. The world championships gets 114 boxes for the players, 96 customised DSi's ($150 base for DSi, more possible for the engraving), $100,500 in scholarships, 12 trips to worlds 2010 (Appx value varies), 9 trophies (price unknown)

Anyone want to take a shot at calculating that?

Also, thats PER event guys. I really am going to try to get ahold of numbers for events last year for BR, City, S/P/T, Regionals, Nationals.

Considering we pay NOTHING for these events, the output is STAGGERING.

Also, I am NOT including the support boxes for the staff. Since each PTO varies This number cannot be tracked, but you get the idea
